What is electroplating? Discuss with an example.
Electroplating is the process of adding a surface layer of a metal on other material
using electrolysis to prevent corrosion or enhance the appearance of the material.
To electroplate an iron spoon with copper we take a plate of pure copper as anode and
iron spoon as cathode and copper sulphate (CuSO4) is taken as electrolyte. The
electrodes are connected with battery. On passing current through the electrolyte, it
is decomposed into Cu+2 and SO4-2 ions. Cu+2 ions rush towards cathode (iron spoon)
and are deposited on it. There is no scarcity of Cu atoms as they go into the solution
from the anode (copper plate). This process continues until iron spoon is coated with
copper.
