ADVISER: BRENDA P. MANGUILIMOTAN

The purpose of this study was to know how to manage a

business for the future entrepreneurs, specifically the ABM students

who are aiming to be a businessman in the future. The study was

quantitative research utilizing the descriptive method, wherein the

encountered challenges are shared by the respondents to the

researcher using the structured questionnaire. They were 20

business establishment owner or manager respondents. The

sampling technique employed was purposive-convenient sampling

in which the study was conducted at Liloan Poblacion then the data

analyses employed were the Descriptive and Pearson r for the

relationship. Planning is essential for business success, and a

business plan is an effective tool used to organize goals and

objectives into a coherent format. It should reflect the individuality

of the new business and follow a standard of four format. As for the

leading challenge that respondents encountered was the

diversification of their business that caused them to lose the

customer interest. The decision about the significant relationship

between the planning and the challenges encountered by the

business owners was to accept the null hypothesis that there is a

X

significant relationship. Based on the findings it is safe to conclude

that trials that the encountered are part of the business industry in

which they are conditioned as a businessman and later on they can

manage or create interventions to avoid the same problem. As

mentioned in the business management theory by Rizun, Revina,

that efficient organization management, and execution of task are

central for the successful functioning of any organization desire to

attain the goals towards success. Several recommendations were

proposed like: Improving the product and the business itself, time

management, planning and business strategies and in-depth study

pertaining to coping strategies and intervention to the challenges

encountered.

Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Business management is the act of supervising the organization,

coordination, and execution of various business activities. This may include

managing various aspects of the business, such as sales, marketing, and

accounting. Essentially, business managers are in charge of ensuring that day

to day operations run smoothly. Therefore, business management is an

essential component of an organization’s success, and any organization,

regardless of industry, can benefit from a great business manager who is

knowledgeable about best practices and relevant processes. A manager gives

their employees stability, which may increase job satisfaction and reduce

turnover. Managers can help employees feel stable in their job or give them

confidence in the tasks they’re assigned as a company’s success or workload

fluctuates, or as it implements new initiatives.

These were the scenarios where businesses failed because of no good

management. A system migration caused problems in inventory deliveries to

Jollibee stores, and even outright shutdown of 72 stores. According to this

article, Jollibee suffered a sale loss of 6% for at least the first seven days of

August. Calculating using Jollibee’s 2013 revenue, this loss amounts to at

least a whopping Php 92 million. And considering that the project reportedly

already costs Php 500 million, this whole debacle looks like it will cost
12

Jollibee Php 600 million, not including the cost of all the man-days that

Jollibee’s management and staff are probably devoting to fixing this problem.

Other scenario where no good management is seen in the KFC fast food chain.

After a chicken shortage led KFC to temporarily close more than 700 of its

900 UK restaurant, an investigation into its supply chain failures continues.

Management and logistics expert Gerry Brown speaks to Chris Evans about

the ramifications for the Colonel and his partners. KFC’s supply chain debacle

in the UK has dominated headlines for the past week, revealing significant

problems with the chain’s new foodservice suppliers DHL, its relationship

with Quick Service Logistics (QSL), failed deliveries, supervision issues and

temporary store closures. Here management expert and former DHL

operations director, Gerry Brown, outlines where things went wrong and the

lessons learned.

Based on the statistics the number one reason people leave

organizations is their immediate supervisor. “People do not leave

organizations; they leave managers has become refrain.” Worldwide, 24

percent of employees are actively disengaged, and the root of the problem sits

with poor management techniques, according to the Gallup article, The

damage inflicted by poor managers. Actively disengaged employees

negatively affect companies in the number of areas, including in terms of

company loyalty, productivity and profitability, among others. With only 13

percent of employees worldwide engaged in their positions, actively

disengaged employees outnumber engaged employees 2-to-1, showing that the

13

majority of managers are struggling to meet their employee’s engagement

needs.

One of the effective solutions to manage a business is to consult to

other business experts like Alan Taylor – host of Entrepreneur Weekly

podcast. Otherwise, read and study an article on how to manage the business

well especially in terms of finances. This may help the company to grow

abundantly. There are so many podcasts in website about business and

managing which are very helpful. It is important to plan wisely and with the

guidance of the highest above to reach the goal of business.

The study aims to determine and investigate the tips of managers in

managing their business in Liloan. It was discovered that the most businesses

had a tough time managing the business on their own. Entrepreneurs,

especially managers of the business must have a guidance and knowledge to

be able to cope up with the techniques used by other managers during this

time. Community should also help in giving possible way to prosper one’s

business. The whole Liloan should find ways and gather tips to give for the

managers who’s struggling in coping and managing a business this year, 2022.

Theoretical Background

The researchers anchored the study with the theory of Henry Fayol

(1916), which is the Management Theory that focuses on the five functions of
14

management which Henry Fayol theorized that these functions were universal,

and that every manager perform these functions in their daily work. In the

theory, there are five functions of management, they are: Planning,

Organizing, Commanding, Coordinating, and Controlling. Fayol says

that planning, also labelled as a “plan of action,” “is one of the most difficult

and important matters of every business and brings into play all departments

and all functions, especially [management]”. Managers must plan for future

conditions, develop strategic objectives and secure the achievement of future

goals. Therefore, managers must evaluate future contingencies affecting the

organization, and shape the future operational and strategic landscape of the

company. Organizing involves providing everything that is necessary to a

plan of action including physical and human resources and its activities.

Managers must organize the workforce in an efficient manner and structure

and align the activities of the organization. Managers must also train and

recruit the right people for the job, and always secure a sufficiently skilled and

educated workforce. Command is described as getting “the optimum return

from all employees of [a manager’s] unit in the interest of the whole

concern.” Managers must supervise subordinates in their daily work, and

inspire them to achieve company goals. Likewise, it is the responsibility of

managers to communicate company goals and policies to subordinates. The

commanding of subordinates should always be consistent with company

policies, and every manager should treat subordinates in line with the

standards of the company. Coordination requires ensuring that all personnel

understand their responsibilities and resources and activities across the

organization work in harmony in order to achieve the desired goal. Managers

15

must harmonize the procedures and activities performed by the company,

meaning that every activity of each organizational unit should complement

and enrich the work of another. And finally, control consists of “verifying

whether everything occurs in conformity with the plan adopted, the

instructions issued, and the principles established.” Managers must control

that company activities are in line with general company policies and

objectives. It is also the responsibility of the manager to observe and report

deviations from plans and objectives, and to make initiatives to correct

potential deviations.

Researchers have concluded that theory has the information which is

very suitable on the conducted study that tackles about most common tip of

managers in managing businesses. The 5 functions of management have a

great effect and importance to this present study wherein these functions might

be able to be help the managers evaluate their skills and how do they manage

their businesses. It also helps the researchers to find the idea of the most

common tip of managers and to conclude it by the end of this paper. That is

why the researchers have decided to anchor the presented theory on the study

as it is very related, the researchers have created a diagram for the theoretical

framework of the Management Theory that is shown in the table 1.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents about related literature and studies retrieved from

many sources that are categorized as primary, secondary and tertiary sources

such as diaries, published and unpublished studies, books, memorandums,

circular, articles, journals, magazines, newspaper, websites, via internet, or

documentary films or videos that are aligned in each subtopic.

Management Theory

Scientific management theory, American mechanical engineer

(Fredirick Taylor), one of the earliest management theorists, pioneered the

scientific management theory. He and his associates were among the first

individuals to study work performance scientifically. Taylor’s philosophy

emphasized the fact that forcing people to work hard won’t the best way to

optimize results. Instead, Taylor recommended simplifying tasks so as to

increase productivity.

The strategy was a bit different from how businesses were conducted

beforehand. Initially, a factory executive enjoyed minimal, if any contact with

his employee. There was absolutely no way of standardizing workplace rules

and the only motivation of the employees was job security. Furthermore, he

stated that, money was the key incentive for working. Which is why he

developing the “fair day’s wages for a fair day’s work” concept. Since then,

the scientific management theory has been practiced worldwide. The resulting

collaboration between employees and employers evolved into the teamwork

that people now enjoy. According to McGregor (1950s-1960s)

theory X is based on the assumptions that the average human being has an
21

inherit dislike of work and will avoid it if possible. The average human being

prefers to be directed, wishes to avoid responsibility, has relatively little

ambition, and wants security above all.

Theory Y is based on the assumptions that expenditure of physical and

mental effort in work is a natural as play or rest. The average human being

does not inherently dislike work. Depending upon controllable conditions

work may be a source of satisfaction, or a source of punishment. Commitment

to objectives is a function of the rewards associated with their achievement.

The most significant of such rewards, e.g., the satisfaction of ego and self-

actualization needs can be direct products of effort direct towards

organizational objects.

Business (Status) Management

Business process management (BPM), which enables firms to react

quickly to shifting business requirements, has recently become one of the most

crucial managerial subjects. For further boosting the effectiveness of

organizational processes, consultants and researchers are constantly putting

forth new concepts and methodologies based on BPM. To establish objectives

for research and technology transfer, it is important to ascertain the existing

state of practice from an empirical perspective.

According to Henry Eilbirt, I. Robert Parket August 1973; In recent

years, business has come under fire for what critic’s claim is a failure to adapt

to a world that is changing quickly and demands solutions to social issues.

Business may contest the charges as being unfair or it may agree to the
22

challenge. The authors collected information on a selection of significant

American firms' social responsibility initiatives. Every responsive company

was making an attempt of some kind. The study compiles information on the

many types of activities and their effectiveness, links activity to firm size,

summarizes the shareholders' perspective, and outlines future goals. The

results are intended to serve as a benchmark and guide for management that is

currently in place and for those who are developing initiatives in this area.

According to Jone L. Pearce (2010), From across the wide range of

organization and management topics, scholars are increasingly turning to

status to account for empirical puzzles. As is reflected in the following

chapters, recent programs of research on the role of status on strategic

diversification and alliance formation, intra-team conflict, discrimination and

harassment, organizational change, employee identification, and

organizational commitment are timely important.

This resurgence of interest may have arisen because scholars across

the management and organization disciplines have turned their attention to

understanding the problems of markets, strategies, and organizations they have

observed, and observation inevitably directs attention to understanding the

problems of markets.

Common Tips of Managers in Managing Business

According to Edward M Mone, Manuel London (2018). The authors

broaden the traditional definition of performance management to include

23

building trust, fostering empowerment, managing team learning and

maintaining open and honest communication about performance, all of which

are critical to employee engagement. Care studies provide concrete examples,

while checklist and surveys provide managers with methods for assessing

employee engagement as well as recommendation for increasing engagement.

According to Jim Morris and Betsey Upchurch on January 11, 2017, as

a manager, you have the opportunity to lead, supervise, mentor and motivate

others- and your ability to do so effectively makes a huge difference to you

company’s overall success. Managing is about bringing out the best in people,

not overwhelming subordinates with technical information. Management isn’t

learned by memorizing seven simple steps or a catchy acronym like (L) is for

“Listen”, (E) is for “Engage”, (A) is for “Authorize” and (D) is for

“Demonstrate”. Learning to be a more effective manager is a complex, not

simple, and one technique definitely does not fit all managers. You are

expected to increase or maintain success, by getting the best performance

possible out of your people yet you have to operate within often difficult and

demoralizing policies, procedures and guidelines established by senior

management. Tips of Managers in managing the business shows that you are

more likely to be successful as a manager not by fixing your weaknesses, but

by understanding and working around them. Understand and negotiate the

right management contract, in other words, if you don’t think the job you’ve

been promoted into is possible, either don’t take it or negotiate the scope of

the job.
24

According to Henry Mintzberg, February 2nd 2021, in a nutshell, a

successful manager knows when to play every role separately or a

combination of roles to achieve success. The manager’s profession can be

defined as playing several roles or planned set of actions linked to his position.

However, with time and after the learning organization concept by Garvin et al

(2008) was well recognized, a manager’s role evolved, and it needs a new set

of skills to empower employees to achieve their goals as well as the

organizational goals. Managers need to focus on goals relations and

participation (Yuki,2001). To do so, a manager needs to play more the

leadership role to inspire people and share with them the necessary

information to work together as a team, cooperate, and learn from each other.

According to David Ford, Lars-Erik Gadde, Hakan Hakansson, Ivan

Snehota on March 2011, Managers must think that the company will be

dependent because it will be needed a strategic thinking and it must cope with

all of the most important relationship or on which the success depends, and it

must be also well strategized when it comes to customers, suppliers, as well as

to its competitors. Company don’t face a simple choice between whether to

cooperate or compete with others: business relationships are likely to consist

of a varying combination of cooperation, conflict, integration and separation.

It may cooperate with a company with which it otherwise competes in

designing a common logistics system or in negotiations with government. In

contrast, the same company may compete with one of its own customers to

determine which of them will develop a productive relationship with one of

the supplier’s own suppliers

25

Relationship between the business status and common tips of

managers in managing business

According to David Ford, Lars-Erick Gadde, Hakan Hakansson, Ivan

Snehota on (2011), No company is an island in the world of business. Each

company is locked into a complex network of relationships with its customers,

suppliers and other counterparts. What happens in these relationships is

critical to the success of any business. Managing a company’s relationships

and its position in the network is a central, but often misunderstood is aspect

of business. This new edition of Managing Business Relationships aims to

help managers and students understand the reality of business networks and

how to manage in them. It has been entirely rewritten to include the latest

thinking and research from the IMP (Industrial Marketing and Purchasing)

Group and includes new chapters on Intermediation in Business Networks, the

Economics of Business Relationships and the Practice of Business

Networking. Features: Provides a structured way to understand business

networks and their meaning for the practicing manager. Offers a complete

analysis of management in different relationships including those with

customers, suppliers, distributors and development counterparts. Presents a

practical analysis of the problems and choices that managers face in

developing and changing their relationships and a guide to the critical skills of

business networking. The book is vital reading for students of business

marketing, purchasing, business networks and relationship management. It is

also a valuable resource for all managers operating in business networks,

including those in marketing, purchasing, strategy, technical development and

distribution.
26

Summarizing all the content of this chapter, it contains the related

literatures and studies of the conducted study. Researchers were gathering and

comparing different related studies to come up a realization. Also, a brief

discussion about the subtopics that will be important to researchers’ study. The

first subtopic is about the Management Theory, the researchers’ have

concluded that the . The second subtopic is about the Business (status)

Management, the researchers’ have concluded the possible problems that

respondents’ might have encountered during their interaction to their friends

and relatives during pandemic; the respondents’ isolation or the relatives’ and

friends’ isolation that might result to unsuccessful social interaction, lack of

physical intimacy during interaction, possible problems that occur during

communicating through screens (e.g., noises, video call lag, auditory and

visual impairments), and unable to comprehend the mood of the person they

are interacting with due to covering their faces with facemasks and face

shields. The researchers’ have chosen these possible problems because most of

the related studies have shown the same problems encountered when

interacting during pandemic which the respondents might also experience.

Lastly, the third subtopic is Common Tips of Managers in Managing Business,

the researchers’ have concluded that interaction using Facebook and online

games will be one of the ways that the respondents’ might use to interact with

their relatives and friends due to most of the usage of the Filipino citizens as

substitute for interacting when face-to-face interaction is not possible. Also,

online games because the respondents are teenagers, they might use it as one

of their means for enjoyment as well as interacting with their relatives and

friends.
27

encountered are part of the business industry in which they are

conditioned as a businessman and later on they can manage or

create interventions to avoid the same problem. As mentioned in

the business management theory by Rizun, Revina, an that efficient

28

organization management, and execution of task are central for the

successful functioning of any organization desire to attain the goals

towards success. Several recommendations were proposed like:

Improving the product and the business itself, time management,

planning and business strategies and in-depth study pertaining to

coping strategies and intervention to the challenges encountered.

Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the important parts of the study that transpired in

the course of the study. These are composed of research method, respondents,

environment, sampling design or technique, procedure of data collection,

ethical consideration, and data analysis.

Method

The study was quantitative research utilizing descriptive-research

design because it tries to find out the specific characteristics regarding most

common tip of managers in managing business among the managers in Liloan

where in their answers are assigned in numbers for statistical purposes.

Generalization be created using the numerical results, as well as decision

regarding the null hypothesis either to accept or reject based on the

relationship of the two variables.

29

Environment

The study will be conducted in the Municipality of Liloan, Cebu,

which is located in the northern part of Cebu. Can be travelled using the public

utility vehicle to 2 to 3 hours, because it has 19 kilometers from Cebu City.

The municipality is surrounded with business establishments can be small,

medium, large businesses owned and managed by local businessmen. The

landmark is the old famous San Fernando El Rey Parish Church. With over

160,000 total population. The municipality is aspiring to become a city as

sponsored by the previous mayor and congressman Duke Frasco, that is why

many businesses are plan to be built in this place. Another important landmark

in Liloan is the ongoing Pier 88, as well as the famous delicacy which is the

Titays Rosquillos, with an ongoing construction of city hall.

Respondents

The respondents of this study are the 20 managers who established

their businesses in Liloan for almost 2 years whose business prosper and

known to the community of its service and patronize by the people in Liloan

which can be small, medium, large business as an inclusive criterion. For

those who are new to business are excluded.

Sampling Technique

A purposive-convenience sampling will be used to conduct this study,

because of the choice of respondents according to the criteria who are the

managers in business enterprise. It is also convenience because the

respondents are accessible by the researchers who are students in Liloan

30

National High School it is drawn from a source that is conveniently accessible

to the researcher.

Instrument

A researcher-made instrument will be used in this study where in pre-testing

must be done prior to the actual conduct of the study in order to validate and modify

the content according to the suggestions made by the qualified critic respondents. The

instruments have two parts, part one is about the business status where in it can be

answered by using the Likert scale: 4, 3, 2, 1 4 which is very good, 3 good, 2 fair, 1

poor. The part is about the most common tip of managers in managing their business

which is answerable by choosing one as most common among the choices.

Data Gathering Procedure

Prior the actual conduct of survey, the researchers made an Intent

Letter asking for permission to the school administrator to conduct the study,

also allowing the qualified respondents to sign the informed consent after a

thorough reading about the study. The actual conduct of the study is facilitated

by the researchers for them to answer. Then the answered questionnaire will

be collected for statistical treatment, analysis and interpretation.

Ethical Consideration

Ethical consideration must be observed in the study like respecting the

rights of the respondents by allowing them to understand about the study,

asking their consent by affixing their signature. Allowing them to ask

questions and answered it appropriately. Their answer will remain

31

confidential, no incentives will give to the respondents because this is for the

sake of truth and knowledge. If they decide to discontinue the process of

answering the survey for a valid reason, they will be allowed without

consequence.

Data Analysis

Statistical treatment used in the study are the following:

1. Mean for the business status.

2. Mode for the most common tip of managers in managing business.

3. Pearson r to relationship between the business status and the common

tips of managers in managing business.

Likert Scale for the business status

Scale Range Interpretation Description

numerous revising of conduction of the research. There has been a difficulty

on communicating with other researchers and mistakes on print outs. It was

truly hard in that part but still the researchers still manage to overcome it. Next

problems were some business owners who do not want to participate on the

program which gives the researchers a hard time dealing with it. Thanks to

some business owners they have considered the hard work done by the

researchers and participate voluntarily. And then lastly, the identification of

the themes needed, coding and analysis to the gathered data. Some members

of the researchers are not present, so the only present researchers are only the

one who does the coding and separation according to its themes. But still, all

the challenges were overcome and finished the chapter.

Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMEDATION

In this final chapter, we present a summary of the findings from the

four statements of the problem. We also provide a comprehensive conclusion

that has been carefully analyzed by the researchers, followed by

recommendations for respondents who may benefit from assistance or

managing business, it provides further insights. The mean scores indicate that
factors such as Accept Feedback, Open and Honest, Set Realistic Goals, Two
Way Communication, and Time Management, respectively, falling within the
"Very Common Tip" range. These scores suggest that these factors play a
crucial role in managing business. Table 2 highlights the importance of factors
such as accept feedback, open and honest, set realistic goals, and time
management in managing business. Finally, Table 3 explores the relationship
between the business status and common tips of managers in managing
business. Through a Pearson r statistical analysis, the researchers examined the
relationship between Accept Feedback, Open and Honest, Set Realistic Goals,
and Time Management. The analysis yielded a p-value, indicating the level of
significance. Based on the obtained p-value, the researchers concluded that
there is no significant relationship between the extent of success of businesses
in Liloan and the effective level of path making and managing. As a result, the
null hypothesis was accepted. Indicates that the extent of success is not
significantly related to the effective level of path making and managing. These
findings provide valuable insights into the business landscape in Liloan and
can guide future strategies for business success.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the businesses in Liloan have demonstrated a

commendable level of success overall, with a grand mean score indicating
"Good" performance. This suggests a positive and thriving business
environment in the area. However, it is important to acknowledge that success
levels can vary across different business operations, indicating potential areas
for improvement or specialization.

supervising Employees have been identified as critical elements in achieving
success in Liloan's businesses. These factors play a significant role in effective
path making and managing, and businesses should prioritize them to enhance
their overall performance.
38

Furthermore, the analysis reveals that there is significant relationship between

the business status and the common tips of managers in managing business.
This suggests that success in businesses does not solely depend on the
identified factors but may be influenced by other variables or strategies that
were not explored in this study.

These findings provide valuable insights for managers and businesses in

Liloan, highlighting the importance of effective management practices and the
need to address specific challenges within each business operation. By
focusing on key factors and continually adapting to the changing business
landscape, businesses in Liloan can further enhance their success and
contribute to the local economy.

factors that may influence the success of businesses in Liloan, beyond those

resources to businesses in Liloan, particularly in areas where improvements

are needed.
