Theory of knowledge - Planning and progress form
Completion of this form The completion of this form by each candidate and their teacher for theory of knowledge is a
mandatory requirement. This will strengthen the process of writing the essay and support the authenticity of a candidate's
work. Each completed form must be submitted to the IB, but will not be marked.
Candidate This form must be completed during the planning and progress of your essay. It is a record of three interactions
with your teacher. The first interaction should focus on discussing the prescribed titles and choosing the title for your essay. In
your second interaction you should discuss the development of your ideas in relation to your chosen title, and you may present
to your teacher an exploration of those ideas in some written form. This will allow you to create a plan for the structure of your
essay. For your final interaction you are encouraged to present to your teacher a full draft of your essay. The teacher is
permitted to provide written comments on your draft, but will not mark or edit your draft.
Teacher You must have at least three interactions with each candidate; one early on in the process to discuss the prescribed
titles, an interim session to discuss progress and a final session at which the candidate should present a full draft. Other
interactions are permitted, but only these three should be recorded on this form.
Prescribed title:
“The production of knowledge is always a collaborative task and never solely a product of the individual.” Discuss this
statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.

Discussion of titles: we discussed that I want to write about title 2 because I think the words 11/01/19
always and never in the title make it provocative. I can also already think of lots of examples
that I could use. I know I want to focus on Math as one of my Areas of Knowledge for my

essay, so one of my next steps will be to decide what other Area of Knowledge to use as
well as Math.
Discussion of plan: we discussed my essay plan and my focus on Math and Natural 18/01/19
Sciences as my 2 Areas of Knowledge for the essay. We discussed a bit whether I am going
to view the term collaboration in a narrow direct way or in a more open broad way, e.g. if a
Second interaction:
scientist came up with an idea on their own but then it had to be reviewed by a group of
scientists in order to get published or get funding. My conversation with my teacher helped
me realize I need to think about this more.
Discussion of draft: I got feedback on my draft essay. My teacher suggested that I should 08/02/19
make sure that every example is being used to support an argument or counter argument,
not just put in the essay for no reason. So I will go back and check that each example is
Third interaction:
doing this. She also said that my introduction is too long and descriptive and suggested I cut
it down to a much shorter introduction to give me more words for the more important bits of
the essay.

Teacher's comments:
She clearly developed and refined her ideas through from a plan to a draft to the final essay. Feedback given at each stage
was clearly reflected in her work presented at the next stage of the process. She had a definite idea of which title she
wanted to write on from the very beginning of the process, and her essay examples allowed her to make connections to
some of her personal interests and experiences as an HL Math student.
