FOUNDATION IN ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

PROGRAM SYNOPSIS

Foundation in Economics and Management Sciences (ENMS) was established alongside the
operation of the Department of Economics and Management Sciences (DENMS), Centre for
Foundation Studies (CFS) IIUM in 1984. The programme aims to prepare students with the
fundamental knowledge and skills required by the undergraduate studies at the Kulliyyah of
Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS), IIUM Gombak campus. ENMS introduces
students to different disciplines of economics studies such as accounting, business, economics,
finance, and mathematics while integrating the element of Islamization of Human Knowledge
(IOHK) into these courses, which is consistent to the vision and mission of KENMS. ENMS is
a programme that fits well into the Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF). ENMS holistic
curriculum allows students to relate the element of KhAIR within themselves. Courses offered
by DENMS allow students to enhance their leadership quality (Khalifah); infused with the
concept of Amanah (Islamic virtues); instilling the culture of Iqra’ through the elements of
lifelong learning among its courses; and to become a productive and beneficial member of the
society who characterizes the concept of Rahmatan lil- ‘Alamin to its surroundings.

COURSE SYNOPSIS

LANGUAGES
COURSE COURSE SYNOPSIS
This is an English language course designed for intermediate level of English. It is an
integrated course which focuses on effective development of receptive and productive skills
in English. Through the inclusion of SAF as the key features of students’ learning
experience, the course embeds the elements and values that are significant in the holistic
nurturing of Insan Sejahtera. Learners take an active role in the classroom to find ways to

communicate clearly and concisely. At the end of the course, students will be able to express
themselves clearly on a wide range of subjects which include topics on sustainability such
as the environment, economy and social issues, incorporate Islamic values, communicate
fluently and be independent users of the language.

This is an English language course designed for upper intermediate level of English. It is
an integrated course which focuses on effective development of receptive and productive
skills in English. Through the inclusion of SAF as the key features of students’ learning
experience, the course embeds the elements and values that are significant in the holistic
nurturing of Insan Sejahtera. Learners take an active role in the classroom to find ways to
English Level 6 communicate clearly and concisely. This course also incorporates community engagement
project work that allows students to apply and demonstrate language skills. At the end of
the course, students will be able to express themselves clearly on a wide range of subjects
which include topics on sustainability such as the environment, economy and social issues,
incorporate Islamic values, communicate fluently and be independent users of the language.

This course provides students with non-Arabic basic an introduction to everyday


expressions, and high frequency words and phrases for the elementary level. It is an
integrated course which aims to develop all the fundamental language skills, i.e., reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. Through this course, students are also equipped with
Quranic Level 1 Islamic values and practices imbued with Iman, Taqwa, Amanah and Akhlaq. The course
aims to help students express their opinions on some familiar sustainability issues such as
good health and well- being, quality education and gender equality towards becoming and
embodying Insan Sejahtera in their life.
This course provides a module of the Arabic Language for elementary level. It is designed
for students with some prior knowledge of the language. It is an integrated course, which
combines four essential language skills. This course will equip students with the ability to
use the Arabic Language in areas of immediate relevance such as personal information,
study, work, and leisure. Through this course, students are also equipped with Islamic
Quranic Level 2
values and practices imbued with Iman, Taqwa, Amanah and Akhlaq. The course aims to
help students express their opinions on some familiar sustainability issues such as good
health and well- being, quality education and gender equality towards becoming and
embodying Insan Sejahtera in their life.

This course explores the concept of Islam and its characteristics. It later discusses
elementary understanding of the three components of Islam. The discussion on alʿAqīdah
encompasses its characteristics and invalidations. The discourse on al-Sharīʿah covers its
Maqāṣid (objectives) and the concept of ʿIbādah in Islam. Finally, the discussion on al-

Akhlāq highlights its principles, emphasising on understanding its virtues and vices. By the

end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of Islam and its key
components as well as synthesising the understanding of Islam in order to comprehend and
adequately describe Islam as al-Dīn.

This course covers general discussions on the concepts of knowledge, vicegerency, and
civilisation in Islam. It also highlights the relationship between Qurʾān and science and arts.

Ethical Digital Literacy is a comprehensive course designed to equip students with


essential skills and knowledge required to navigate the 21st century confidently and
ethically. In this course, participants will explore the fundamental concepts of exploring
information, searching tools, and practice skills associated with digital literacy, enabling
Ethical Digital them to engage with technology effectively and responsibly in various aspects of their
Literacy personal and professional lives without neglecting the ethics. By the end of this course,
students will have developed a strong foundation in digital literacy, empowering them to
navigate the digital landscape confidently, responsibly, and ethically, while leveraging
digital tools for personal and professional growth.

ELECTIVES (UniCORE)
COURSE COURSE SYNOPSIS
This course is designed for students who have little knowledge of Quranic recitation. In this
course, students will be guided through imitating, vocalising and reciting Juzuk ‘Amma with
the transmission of Imam Hafs ‘An ‘Asim. Students are also required to memorise 13 surahs

which are: Al-Takathur, Al-‘Asr, Al-Humazah, Al-Fil, Quraysh, Al-Ma’un, Al-Kawthar, Al-
Qur’an 1
Kafirun, Al-Nasr, Al-Masad, Al-Ikhlas, Al- Falaq, Al-Nas. While undergoing the course,
students will be given two opportunities to sit for the Exit Tilawah Placement Test (ETPT)
for possible early fulfilment of the tilawah requirement.
This course is designed for undergraduate Muslim students of IIUM who have acquired basic
skills of Quranic recitation. In this course students will be assisted to reach the intermediate
level of Quranic recitation through open consultation and 4 times obligatory consultations
with lecturers. Students will also be given personalised instruction to help them memorise 22
Tilawah Al-
surahs of Juz ‘Amma: (Al-Duha, Al-Sharh, Al-Tin, Al-Qadr, Al-Bayyinah, Al-Zalzalah, Al-
Qur’an 2
‘Adiyat, Al-Qari’ah, Al-Takathur, Al-‘Asr, Al-Humazah, Al-Fil, Quraysh, Al-Ma’un, Al-
Kawthar, Al-Kafirun, Al-Nasr, Al-Masad, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, Al-Nas). While undergoing
the course, students will be given two opportunities to sit for the Exit Tilawah Placement

other selected issues related to Muslim daily life such as adab, eschatology and balanced

personality. In this course, students will engage in a series of discussions and other co-
curricular activities which will enhance their communication skills.
The course discusses the relevance of Ibadah in the inculcation of values in Muslims’ daily
activities. The course will also focus on the accurate implementation and performance of

fundamental ‘ibādah (fard ‘ayn) such as salāh, sawm, zakāt and hajj as the catalyst for
positive values.

COMMON CORES
COURSE COURSE SYNOPSIS
This course is a common core course for the Social Science and Humanities module. It
provides introductory knowledge of law including functions, classification, sources as well

course will produce law-abiding citizen that ultimately appreciate the roles of law in the

This course is a common core course for the Social Science and Humanities module. It
introduces students to basic concepts of economics. The first part of the course deals with

NICHE COURSE

The course provides the required algebraic concept, mathematical knowledge on function,
differentiation, and integration. The course aims to introduce real-life applications of the
Mathematics topics taught. In general, this course exposes students to calculus, which has many
applications in business and economics.

This course provides students with basic technical knowledge in bookkeeping concepts and
preparation of financial statements for business entities. Students will learn about the
accounting equation, double entry system, full coverage on accounting cycle and preparing

financial statements. Students will also be introduced to the basic cost concepts in
managerial accounting.

This course is designed to equip the students with the basic knowledge of domestic and
international business environment, management, production, and marketing. It aims to

expose various aspects of everyday business activities as well as the decision to become an

entrepreneur. Each topic is repleted with Islamic spirit and principles.

This course is designed to equip students with the basic knowledge in finance and Islamic
finance, for both personal and professional use. It concerns with good understanding on
finance and Islamic finance concept, function, and objectives. It broadly covers the financial
Finance markets and its instruments, financial tools, and Islamic financial contracts. This course
also aims to enable students to appreciate the major differences between the Islamic and
conventional finance.
