- tangle (n): an untidy mass of things that are not in a state of order, or a state of confusion or difficulty

e.g. He got into a tangle with his budget figures.
- battle (n): a fight between armed forces, or an argument between two groups – trận đánh, cuộc chiến
đấu
e.g. They've been engaged in a legal battle with the council for several months.
- cosmopolitan (adj): containing or having experience of people and things from many different parts of
the world – quốc tế
e.g. New York is a highly cosmopolitan city.
- chiropody (n): the study and treatment of problems and diseases of people's feet – chuyên về chữa
bệnh ở chân
e.g. The local chiropody service has been shut down and transferred to a health centre about three miles
away.
- To erode (v): to rub or be rubbed away gradually – xói mòn, ăn mòn
e.g. Wind and rain have eroded the statues into shapeless lumps of stone.
- out of this world: extremely good – tuyệt vời
e.g. What a restaurant - the food was out of this world!
- forever (adv): very often – thường xuyên
e.g. She's forever telling him she's going to leave him but she never actually does.
- to put yourself out: to make an effort to do something to help someone, even if it is not convenient -

- compatible (adj): able to exist, live, or work successfully with something or someone else – hợp, thích

e.g. It was when we started living together that we found we just weren't compatible.
- liable (adj): having (legal) responsibility for something or someone – có trách nhiệm về mặt pháp lý,

e.g. The law holds parents liable if a child does not attend school.
- to advocate (v): to publicly support or suggest an idea, development, or way of doing something – chủ
trương, tán thành, ủng hộ
e.g. We will continue to advocate for a regional, cooperative approach to the construction project.
- to provoke (v): to cause a reaction, especially a negative one – xúi giục, khích, kích động
e.g. The release from prison of two of the terrorists has provoked a public outcry.
- to trigger (v): to cause something to start – gây nên
e.g. The racial incidents at the weekend have triggered off a wave of protests.
- to call someone/something off: to order a dog, or sometimes a person, to stop attacking someone or
something – ra lệnh cho ai ngừng tấn công
e.g. I shouted to him to call his dog off, but he just laughed at me.
- to come through (sth): to manage to get to the end of a difficult or dangerous situation - vượt qua tình

e.g. We've had some hard times, but we've come through.
- to fat chance: used to say that you certainly do not think that something is likely to happen - không tin

- to keep/put your nose to the grindstone: to work very hard for a long time

- ample (adj): more than enough – nhiều, dư
e.g. You'll have ample opportunity to ask questions after the talk.
- to be engrossed in: giving all your attention to something – say mê
e.g. She was so engrossed in the book that she forgot the cookies in the oven.
-to bring sb back down to earth: to start dealing with life and problems again after you have had a
very exciting time, or to make someone do this – đối mặt với thực tế sau một khoảng thời gian vui vẻ
e.g. The realization of how little work I'd done for the exams brought me abruptly back down to earth.
- to go to waste: to not be used, eaten, etc. - bị lãng phí; uổng phí
e.g. Local produce often goes to waste because people prefer to buy imported food.
- to act/play the goat: to behave in a silly way - cư xử, hành động một cách khôi hài hay ngớ ngẩn
e.g. Stop acting the goat or I’ll send you out!
-to make it one's business: to decide to do something in which one was not involved or that was not
one's responsibility - quyết định làm việc gì trong khi việc đó không liên quan hoặc không phải trách
nhiệm của mình
e.g. He's decided to make it his business to bring more affordable housing to the city.
