e) General Truths or Facts in the Past

2. Structure of the Past Simple Tense

The past simple tense has two main forms, depending on whether the verb is regular or irregular.

a) Positive Sentences

1. Structure:
Subject + past form of the verb (V2 form)

o For Regular Verbs: Add “-ed” to the base form of the verb.

▪ Example: "She worked hard."

o For Irregular Verbs: Use the second form of the verb (irregular past form).

▪ Example: "They ate dinner."

2. Examples:

o Regular: "I called her yesterday."

o Irregular: "We saw a movie."

b) Negative Sentences

1. Structure:
Subject + did not + base form of the verb

o Use “did not” (or “didn’t”) followed by the base form of the verb.

▪ Example: "He did not go to the party."

2. Examples:

o "She didn’t watch TV."

o "We did not finish the project."

c) Questions

1. Structure:
Did + subject + base form of the verb?

o Start with "Did," followed by the subject and the base form of the verb.

▪ Example: "Did you see the movie?"

2. Examples:

o "Did she like the gift?"

o "Did they visit the museum?"

3. Forming the Past Simple Tense

a) Forming Regular Verbs

1. Add “-ed” to the base form of most regular verbs.

o Example: "walk" → "walked"; "listen" → "listened"

2. Spelling Rules:

o If a verb ends in “e,” just add “-d.”

Example: "love" → "loved"

o If a verb ends in a consonant + “y,” change “y” to “i” and add “-ed.”
Example: "study" → "studied"
o If a verb ends in a single vowel + single consonant (and is stressed), double the
consonant and add “-ed.”
Example: "stop" → "stopped"

b) Forming Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs have unique past forms that don’t follow regular patterns. Some examples include:

• "go" → "went"

• "have" → "had"

• "make" → "made"

• "take" → "took"

There is no formula for irregular verbs, so they must be memorized.

4. Examples of Past Simple Sentences

• Positive: "They built a new house." (Irregular verb)

• Negative: "She did not call me." (Regular verb)

• Question: "Did you enjoy the concert?"

The past simple tense is straightforward in structure and widely used for most past actions, events, and
general situations that happened in the past. Let me know if you need more examples or a practice
