Abstract –

Go-Kart is a racing vehicle having very low ground clearance and can be
work on only flat racing circuits. This paper concentrates on explaining the
engineering behind designing of a safe, rigid and torsional free frame,
well-mounted power train along with braking and steering system. We
approached our design by considering all possible alternatives for a system
and modelling them in FUSION 360 & CREO 3.0. The design process of
the vehicle is iterative and is based on various engineering and reverse
engineering processes depending upon the availability, cost and other such
factors. The design objectives, set out to be achieved were four simple
goals applied to every component of the vehicle: durable, Safety &
ergonomics, light-weight and high performance.
All the parameters like Reliability, safety, Cost, Performance, aesthetics,
ergonomics, Standard dimensions & material were also taken in
consideration on the same time. Where ever possible finite element
analysis (FEA) was done on the regularly loaded parts & modifications
were done accordingly to avoid any type of design failure. Also, while
designing every individual part DFMEA and DVP has been done which
improved our quality standard, factor of safety and other safety parameters
also. The designed go-kart is able to withstand against any adverse
condition on road as each component is designed specifically considering
all types of failures and safety issues. Power train is specially designed to
get maximum speed and torque for high performance which can be given
by the any other geared vehicle.

1.2 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of work for an electric go-kart project encompasses a
comprehensive range of tasks that ensure the successful design and
deployment of the go-karts. It begins with the conceptualization and
design phase, where engineers and designers create the framework and
aesthetic of the gokart, integrating key components such as the electric
motor, battery pack, and control systems.
This phase also includes safety considerations, compliance with regulatory
standards, and the integration of performance-enhancing features like
regenerative braking and advanced systems.
Next comes the prototyping and testing phase, where the initial designs are
brought to life and subjected to testing for durability, safety, and
performance. This phase involves multiple iterations and adjustments
based on test results and feedback from stakeholders. Following successful
testing, the production phase begins, with manufacturing and assembly
lines established to produce the go-karts at scale.
Concurrently, the infrastructure to support electric go-karts, such as
charging stations and track modifications, is developed to ensure efficient
operation. The final scope of work also includes marketing, distribution,
and customer support to ensure the go-karts reach their intended audience
and can be serviced as needed. This comprehensive approach guarantees
that the electric go-kart project is executed with precision, safety, and a
commitment to environmental sustainability.

1.3 PROJECT BACKGROUND

The electric go-kart project was made for the campus mobility for short
distance travel. The key motivation behind the project was to create an
eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional gas-powered go-
karts, which are known for their noise and emissions issues. The team
recognized that while electric go-karts were available in the market, the
imported models were relatively expensive, leading to high operating
costs. It aimed to design and develop a working electric three-wheel go-
kart model that is simple to operate, durable, and offers comparable
performance to gas-powered karts, while reducing the cost of ownership
and operation. The initial research and planning phase took around 2
months, followed by a 3-month project build time. The team explored
various motor and controller options, eventually settling on a commercial
3-phase motor controller intended for electric scooters. One of the key
challenges was finding a suitable and cost-effective motor that could meet
the power requirements (around 1000W) without exceeding the project
budget.
The team built a prototype electric go-kart using a purchased rolling
chassis, modifying and assembling the various components, including the
motor, controller, battery pack. Extensive testing was conducted to validate
the performance, safety, and reliability of the electric go-kart prototype.
1.4 The Rise of Electric Vehicles
The broader movement towards electric vehicles (EVs) is influenced by
multiple factors, such as advancements in battery technology, growing
environmental awareness, and regulatory frameworks designed to curb
carbon emissions. Electric go-karts serve as a microcosm of this transition,
demonstrating how electric propulsion can elevate the motorsport
experience. They offer unique advantages, including high torque and
instant acceleration, which enhance performance on the track.
Additionally, the operational costs of electric go-karts are generally lower
than their gas-powered counterparts, making them an attractive option for
both enthusiasts and competitive racers.
The integration of sustainable practices within motorsports is not just a
trend but a necessity in addressing climate change. Electric go-karts, with
their zero tailpipe emissions, provide a cleaner alternative that aligns with
