CHAPTER: 8 RECRUITMENT, SELECTION AND TRAINING

1. Define internal recruitment.


Filling a vacant post with someone already employed in the business.
2. Define external recruitment.
Filling a vacant post with somebody not already employed in the business.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of internal recruitment?
Advantages: i) Vacancy can be filled more quickly and more cheaply.
ii) Applicants already know how the business works.
iii) The business already knows the strengths and weaknesses of applicants.
iv) Employees can become more motivated when they see that there is a chance of promotion.
Disadvantages: i) A better candidate may have been available from outside the business.
ii) It could cause conflict within the workplace if another internal candidate feel that they should have
got the job.
iii) It does not bring in new ideas from outside the business.
iv) There will still be vacancy to fill, unless the employee’s previous job has become redundant.
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of external recruitment?
Advantages: i) External applicants might bring new ideas and this can improve the effectiveness and
efficiency of the business.
ii) There will be wider choice of applicants with different skills and experience.
iii) It avoids the risk of upsetting employees when someone who is internal is promoted.
Disadvantages: i) It takes longer to fill the vacancy.
ii) It is more expensive than internal recruitment because of advertising costs and the time
spent interviewing candidates.
iii) External applicants will need induction training with increase their expenses.
5. List the stages of recruitment and selection of employees.
Vacancy arises – Job description – Job specification – Advertising of job – Application forms and job
details are sent out – Applications received – Shortlisting – Interview – Vacancy filled.
6. Define job description
A list of the key points about a job, job title, key duties, responsibilities and accountability.
7. Define job specification
A list of the qualifications, skills, experience and personal qualities looked for in successful applicants.
8. What is a shortlist?
A list of candidates who are chosen from all of the applicants to be interviewed for the job.
9. What are the benefits and limitations of part-time and full-time employees?
Benefits of part-time employees:
Flexibility: Easier to balance work with personal commitments like school, childcare, or other jobs.
Work-Life Balance: More time for personal pursuits and leisure activities.
Variety: Opportunity to gain diverse experiences by working in multiple roles or industries.
Limitations of part-time employees:
Limited Benefits: Often do not receive health insurance, retirement plans, or paid time off.
Job Security: May face less job stability and fewer full-time opportunities.
Career Advancement: Fewer opportunities for promotions or professional development within the
company.
Integration: May feel less connected to the company culture and team dynamics.
Benefits of full-time employees:
Job Security: Typically enjoy more job stability and long-term contracts.
Often receive health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other perks.
Career Advancement: More opportunities for promotions and professional development.
Integration: More involvement in company culture and teamwork.
Limitations of full-time employees:
Work-Life Balance: Less flexibility for personal commitments and family time.
Burnout Risk: Greater risk of stress and burnout due to longer hours and responsibilities.
Less Flexibility: Fixed schedules can limit the ability to manage personal affairs.
10. Benefits of training to both businesses and employees.
Production workers are more efficient - increases productivity.
Improves the quality of business decisions and reduces mistakes.
Employees can reach their abilities and reach their potential.
Improve customer services and builds customer relationships and increases customer loyalty.
Reduce accidents.
11. What is induction training?
A training programme to help new recruits to become familiar with their workplace, the people they
work with and the procedures they need to follow.
12. Define on-the-job training.
Training at the workplace, watching or following an experienced employee.
13. Define off-the-job training.
Training that takes place away from the workplace.
14. Define resignation.
Termination of employment by the employee, perhaps because they have found a job with a different
employer.
15. Define retirement.
Termination of employment due to the employee reaching an age beyond which they do not need
to work.
16. Define dismissal.
Termination by the employer because the employee has broken company rules or is not performing
work to the required standard.
17. Define redundancy.
Termination of employment by the employer because the job is no longer needed.
18. What are the various legal controls over employment issues?
 Contract of employment - termination by the employer because the employee has broken
company rules or is not performing work to the required standard.
 Unfair Dismissal - It occurs when an employer terminates an employee’s contract without a fair
reason or fails to follow due process.
 Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee or job applicant is treated unfairly
based on certain protected characteristics rather than job performance or qualifications.
 Health and Safety in the workplace is a critical area of labor law focused on preventing
accidents, injuries, and illnesses by ensuring safe working conditions.
 The legal minimum wage is the lowest hourly, daily, or monthly wage that employers are
legally permitted to pay employees. This rate is set by law and aims to protect workers from
exploitation by ensuring a basic standard of income.
