Worksheet #7
Living organisms are made up of millions of units called cells. Cells are tiny so
we need to use a microscope to see their structures.
Animal and plant cells all contain structures specialized for particular functions
called organelles.
Animal cells can be any shape, but plant cells are almost always regular shapes,
like a brick (rectangular or box shape)

Animal and plant cells have certain structures in common.
Name Description
Cell membrane It separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment.
Its structure is permeable to some substances but not to others
(semipermeable). It therefore controls the movement of
substances in and out of the cell. E.g.: it lets oxygen in, and
waste carbon dioxide out.
Cytoplasm This is the jelly – like substance where many of the chemical
reactions in the cell take place. It holds all the organelles
Nucleus Contains most of the genetic material (genes), in the form of
DNA. It controls everything going on in the cell.
Mitochondria Produce energy for the cell, they break down food to form energy
by a process called respiration.
Ribosome It is the proteins’ factory.
Vacuole It is shaped like a sack, it stores water, waste, and food. In
animal cells, vacuoles are small, many, and temporary.
Plant cells are bigger than animal cells and they have
additional structures.
Name Description
Chloroplast The food factory of the plant contains the green pigment
(chlorophyll), which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.
Chloroplasts are found in the green parts of the plant such as the
stem and leaves. They are not found in the roots.
Cell wall It is a tough outer layer, it is freely permeable layer surrounding
the cell membrane (allows all substances to move freely in and
out of the cell). It is made from Cellulose fibers. This gives the
plant cell its shape and strength.
Permanent One large permanent vacuole, stores food, water, and waste.
