Potential hazards
ALLERGY ALERT. Do not eat in Science laboratory, due to
the pos s ibility of chemical contamination. Als o, s ome
s tudents may have a gluten allergy.
food colouring, red
Potential hazards
ALLERGY ALERT. May caus e an allergic reaction in s ome
individuals . Do not drink.

Potential hazards Standard handling procedures
Eas ily flammable. Avoid us e near naked flames .
plastic cup
Potential hazards Standard handling procedures
Flammable. May releas e toxic fumes if burnt. Cup Us e ins ulating foam cups for hot liquids . Do not us e
trans mits heat of hot fluid, caus ing it to become plas tic cups for organic s olvents . Do not heat with
uncomfortable to hold. Organic s olvents may affect the buns en burner.
plas tic, caus ing leaks .
sand
Potential hazards Standard handling procedures
Sand may be thrown around and caus e eye injury. May Should be covered when not in us e, due to the pos s ibility
be s ource of toxoplas mos is , if s and is outs ide and not of a cat infected with toxoplas mos is defaecating in the
covered. s and.
water paint, children's
Potential hazards
Check label to ens ure ingredients are not toxic. Do not
inges t. May caus e s kin irritation.
Chemicals to be used and produced
acetic acid, vinegar (~0.7-1.3 M; ~4-8% wt/wt) (ethanoic acid) CH3COOH(aq)
CAS : 64-19-7
Clas s : nc PG: none Us ers : K-12* Training: 1-6*
GHS data: Not clas s ified as a hazardous chemical.
Potential hazards
Irritant vapour.
carbon dioxide, gas generated during experiment CO 2
CAS : 124-38-9
Clas s : 2.2 PG: none Us ers : K-12 Training: 1-6
GHS data: Not clas s ified as a hazardous chemical.
Potential hazards Standard handling procedures
Harmles s , in quantities generated during experiments . DO NOT GENERATE CARBON DIOXIDE IN A CLOSED
Toxic at high concentrations in air due to abs orption CONTAINER SINCE THE CONTAINER MAY EXPLODE.
through lungs into blood, lowering the pH. Magnes ium burns in carbon dioxide to form magnes ium
oxide and carbon.
sodium hydrogen carbonate, solid (baking s oda, bicarbonate of s oda, s odium bicarbonate) NaHCO 3
CAS : 144-55-8
Clas s : nc PG: none Us ers : K-12* Training: 1-6*
GHS data: Not clas s ified as a hazardous chemical.
Potential hazards
Low toxicity.
water <43.5°C (cold-warm) H2O
CAS : 7732-18-5
Clas s : nc PG: none Us ers : K-12 Training: 1-6
GHS data: Not clas s ified as a hazardous chemical.
Potential hazards Standard handling procedures
Cold water caus es numbnes s and hypothermia if Water in a laboratory s hould not be drunk, due to the
expos ure is prolonged. Water below 43.5°C is generally pos s ibility of chemical contamination. Water s pilled on
cons idered s afe for adults and children. the floor may be a s lip hazard.
Knowledge
I have read and unders tood the potential hazards and s tandard handling procedures of all the equipment, chemicals
and living organis ms .
I have read and unders tood the (Material) Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals us ed and produced.
I have copies of the (Material) Safety Data Sheets of all the chemicals available in or near the clas s room.
Risk assessment
I have cons idered the ris ks of:
fire breakage of equipment electrical s hock radiation
explos ion cuts from equipment es cape of pathogens was te dis pos al
chemicals in eyes s harp objects heavy lifting inappropriate behaviour
inhalation of gas /dus t rotating equipment s lipping, tripping, falling allergies
chemicals on s kin vibration and nois e falling objects s pecial needs
runaway reaction pres s ure heat and cold other ris ks
Certification by Teacher
I have as s es s ed the ris ks as s ociated with:
preparing the equipment, chemicals and living organis ms for this experiment,
performing this experiment with s tudents in the clas s room, and
cleaning up after the experiment and dis pos ing of was tes ,
on the bas is of likelihood and cons equences us ing the School's ris k matrix, according to International Organization for
Standardization Standard ISO 31000:2009 and the Ris k Management Guidelines , HB 436:2013.
I cons ider the inherent level of ris k (ris k level without control meas ures ) to be:
Low ris k Medium risk High ris k Extreme ris k
Control meas ures :
Ens ure that s tudents do not inhale vinegar fumes or get vinegar in eyes or in cuts on s kin.
Don't let s tudents drink the red "lava" fizz.
With the s pecified control meas ures in place, I have found that all the ris ks are "low ris k". Ris ks will therefore be
managed by routine procedures in the clas s room, in combination with the s pecified control meas ures .
