LABORATORY EXAMINATION
I. MATERIALS AND METHODS:
The following steps and methods were employed to analyze the substance:
1. Visual Inspection: The substance was visually inspected for its
physical characteristics, including color, texture, and odor.
2. Sample Collection: A representative sample of the substance
was collected for further analysis. Proper chain of custody
procedures were followed to maintain the integrity of the
evidence.
3. Preliminary Testing: A preliminary color test was also
performed using Marquis Reagent, a common presumptive test
for the presence of opiates. This test indicated the possible
presence of opiates in the sample.
4. Confirmatory Analysis: To conclusively identify the
substance as opium, the collected sample was subjected to Gas
Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. GC-
MS is a highly reliable method for the qualitative and
quantitative analysis of various compounds, including opiates.

II. RESULTS:
The analysis of the substance yielded the following results:
1. Visual Inspection: The substance was a brownish, granular
powder with a distinct, earthy odor, consistent with the
physical characteristics of opium.
2. Preliminary Testing: The Marquis Reagent test produced a
color change indicative of the presence of opiates.
3. GC-MS Analysis: The GC-MS analysis of the sample revealed
the presence of multiple alkaloids, including morphine and
codeine, which are characteristic components of opium. The
presence of these compounds is consistent with opium, as
defined by the NDPS Act.
III. CONCLUSION:
Based on the comprehensive analysis conducted, it is confirmed that the
substance found in the vehicle is opium, as defined by the Narcotic Drugs
and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of India. The presence of
morphine and codeine, both alkaloids found in opium, has been conclusively
established through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
