Coupling: A Basic 16-Step Process

1. Inspect the fifth wheel and kingpin for damaged, loose or missing parts. Make
sure that the fifth wheel is lubricated and in the correct position.

2. Check area for maneuvering space. Check that trailer and cargo are secure.

3. Position the tractor in line with the trailer. Align kingpin and fifth wheel throat.

4. Back SLOWLY into position. STOP just before contact.

5. Secure the tractor: shift into neutral and set the parking brake.

6. Check the trailer height relative to the fifth wheel. The trailer should be
positioned to rise slightly when the fifth wheel is backed in under it.

7. Connect the air lines.

8. Supply air to the trailer.

9. Start the engine and lock the trailer brakes.

10. Back under the trailer:

• Shift into the lowest reverse gear.

• Release the tractor parking brake.
• As the trailer apron contacts the fifth wheel, it will lift the trailer onto the
tractor’s fifth wheel.
• STOP when you hear the click of the jaws closing around the kingpin.
11. Check the connection with a tug test.

12. Secure the vehicle.

13. Inspect the coupling.

14. Connect the electrical cord and check the air lines.

15. Raise the trailer supports.

16. Remove chocks.
