Business English 3 2nd Year Bachelor

Spring Semester 2022-2023

SYLLABUS

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed for “UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (B2)” level students. It features authentic input
and resource materials that represent current issues in the Business world.
This course will focus on building both fluency and accuracy in Business English communication. This
course also aims to give students access and exposure to vocabulary and concepts in the realms of
Business management, finance, and customer service.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

The course aims at:


 Improving students’ communicative competence.
 Integrating the four skills of the English language (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing).
 Acquiring problem solving skills
 Acquiring team-working skills.
 Enriching students' repertoire of business English
 Providing students with assorted study skills for situational needs.
 Familiarizing students with the necessary skills to deal with virtual platforms of learning.

CONCEPTS AND SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED:

The course has been designed to equip the students with soft skills that will enable them to fit in a
workplace. The soft skills that are targeted in this course are as follows: communication, critical
thinking, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, emotional intelligence, creativity, and
interpersonal skills.

METHODOLOGY:

The course has been formulated around preparing students for realistic situations and providing authentic
input and output opportunities. The book Market Leader, includes well-structured units that will be
covered each two weeks. In addition to lectures, each unit will include a warm-up to activate schemata on
the topic. Students will work on vocabulary activities that will prepare them for a listening and reading
activity. Business communication skills and case studies will also provide a chance for speaking output.
Students will be expected to actively participate in roleplays, discussions and activities. Students will be
given homework writing and reading assignments in each class that will be corrected or discussed in the
next class.

Class 1: Communication
Objective: In this lesson, students will be able to describe three characteristics of a good
communicator. Students will be able to understand and communicate the advantages and
disadvantages of e-mail in the workplace. Students will be exposed to a variety of English
idioms and be able to use one in natural communication.

Class 2: International Marketing


Objective: In this lesson, students will be exposed to compounds nouns and noun phrases related
to international marketing. Students will be able to correctly use 2 marketing word partnerships
to orally answer questions about international marketing. Students will be able to understand
marketing word partnerships based on the context of an article. Students will be able to listen
and write down two international marketing strategies based on an interview. Students will be
able to correctly create a noun phrase.

Class 3: Building Relationships


Objective: In this lesson, students will be exposed to vocabulary related to building relationships
in business. Students will be able to use at least 2 multi-word verbs to describe successful
business relationships in their home country. Students will be able to connect a concept about
business partnerships from the listening section to a situation they are aware of in their home
country. Students will be able to explain what factors should be considered when a foreign
company attempts to do business in Morocco.

Class 4: Success
Objective: In this lesson, students will be exposed to content relating to characteristic of
successful businesses. Students will be able to state the meaning of at least 5 prefixes. Students
will be able to listen to a description of a successful business and write a short summary.
Students will be able to read a text about a successful businessman and describe what they would
do in his situation. Students will be able to use the correct verb tense to correct a magazine
article.

Class 5: Job Satisfaction


Objective: Students will explore concepts related to job satisfaction and motivation in the
workplace. Students will be able to use a variety of verbs to talk about this. Students will be
able to listen to an expert on human resources and will see examples of companies well ranked
worldwide in terms of their employees’ satisfaction.

Class 6: Risk
Objective: Students will explore concepts related to risk in the business world. Students will be
able to use a variety of verbs to talk about risk. Students will be able to listen to an expert on
risk and fill in notes. Students will be able to summarize a text about insurance. Students will be
able to create a short dialogue using adverbs of degree.

Class 8: Management Styles


Objective: In this lesson students will be introduced to the course content, syllabus and teacher
expectations. Students will be able to describe the three roles of managers. Students will be able to use
adjectives to explain different managerial styles. Students will be able to refer to texts with the correct
pronouns.

Class 9: Team Building


Objective: In this lesson students will talk about teams and practice skills related to team building. They
will practice reading and listening skills related to the topic. In this lesson students will practice the career
skill of conflict resolution. They will be given tips for that and will be asked to role play a professional
setting situation where they will need to resolve a conflict. Different types of conflicts will be discussed.
Finally, students will be given a case study to work on.

Class 10: Raising Finance


Objective: In this lesson students will be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of borrowing
money. Students will be able to use financial terms in a sentence, as well as agree or disagree with
sayings related to money. Students will be able use financial idioms and will read about finding financial
backing. Students will be able to match dependent prepositions.

Class 11: Customer Service


Objective: In this lesson students will be able to use vocabulary related to complaints in a customer
service context. Students will be able to use idiomatic expressions related to complaints. Students will
explore concepts related to customer service and will be able to discuss the best and worst customer
service they have had in a restaurant. Students will be able to insert a gerund into the correct grammatical
context.

Objective: In this lesson students will be able to categorize steps for companies in crisis and make word
partnerships with related vocabulary. Students will be able to listen to an interview and identify a model
of crisis management. Students will be able to report to a partner the content of two reading articles
related to crisis management. Students will be able to categorize and discuss conditional sentences.

Objective: In this lesson the students will give a presentation about one of the topics discussed
in class so that the teacher can evaluate the skills learnt during the course.
