Field study 1: Learning Episode 5

Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment

Activity 5.1: Managing Time, Space and Learning Resources

Resource Teacher: Mrs. Ma. Jeneath M. Repique Teacher`s Signature:___________ School: KNHS
Grade/ Year Level: 10 Subject Area: English Date: October 7, 2024

OBSERVE

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
- Grade 10 students are typically around 14 or 15 or 16 years old, navigating their way
through ups and downs of high school. They are starting to develop a sense of
independence and are exploring their interest and passions. They may be more focused on
their studies and thinking about their future goals, while also enjoying spading time with
friends and participating in extracurricular activities.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

- In the classroom I observed, the boys and girls are seemingly equal half of the total list.
There are sections that consist of more of the girls, while there are also sections that
consist of more of the boys.

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
- Many students at their age can recognize the consequences of their actions and make
better choices. They often show greater independence in managing their time completing
assignments and interacting with peers. However, some still struggle with impulse control
and may need guidance to develop these skills fully. Overall, while many students are
beginning to manage their behavior, effectively support from teachers and parents remains
important for their growth.

4. Can the learners already work independently?

- Yes, I have seen that they can work independently with the right support and guidance.
They can take responsibility for their own learning and complete tasks without constant
supervision. However, the level of independence may vary based on the student`s
personality and past experiences.

5. Describe their span of attention.

- Their attention span typically ranges from 20-40 minutes when focusing on a single task.
During this time, students can concentrate will and absorb information effectively.
However, their attention may decline if the activity is too long or becomes uninteresting.
Factors such as distractions from technology or social interactions can also affect their
focus.
ANALYZE

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
students` belongings, supplies, etc.?) Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if theses
areas for specific purposes are not present?
- I have observed substantial cabinets within the classroom, designated for the storage of
student`s books and various materials. These cabinets play a crucial role in maintaining a well-
lit environment, contributing to an organized and efficiently managed space. Consequently,
the presence of these cabinets minimizes distractions for both the teacher and the students. In
the absence od such cabinets, an uncomfortable atmosphere would be experienced by
everyone present in the classroom.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List then down. Do these rules reinforce
positive behavior?
- Yes, the rules and procedures were posted at the door that everybody can actually see as they
enter the classroom. Common rules often include; be respectful, say please and sorry, listen to
one another and keep hands and feet to oneself. By encouraging positive behavior such as
cooperation and kindness these guidelines support a productive learning space. Overall, clear
rules can lead to better interactions among students and help them focus on their studies.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher is
available, ask him/her to describe the process. What is the effect of student`s participation in
rule-making on students’ behavior?
- Yes, the students participated in the making of the classroom rules. Involving them in making
of classroom rules can lead to positive behavior changes. They feel a sense of ownership and
responsibility towards the rules. This collaboration often helps them understand the reasons
behind the rules, making them more likely to follow them. As a result, students are more
respectful and engaged, fostering a better learning environment for everyone.

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (Prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
- The daily routine of my Resource Teacher is not properly done as what is expected and
written my lesson plan because the topic is already intended for a several days. So, starting a
day with a discussion is observed. Also, the time allocated for each class is only 45 minutes,
thus to meet the daily objectives, direct discussion is done.
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis for this arrangement? Does this help in
managing the class?
- In the classes I observed, there is no arrangement of sits. That is why students at the back,
mostly boys are less participative and are often distracted by their peers and their cellphones.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

- At the start of the class, I observed that everyone is quietly listening to the teacher, however,
minutes after, the students began to make noises to the point that it`s already very disturbing.
To managed the noise, the teacher would ask question to random students who are making
most of the noise. In that way, students regained their focus on the discussion and kept the
attentiveness of each student in the class.
7. If the learner is not following instruction or is off-task, wat does the Resource Teacher do?
Describe the behavior strategies used?
- When a learner is not following instruction the Resource Teacher takes several steps to
redirect their focus. First, the teacher observes the student to understand the reason for their
distraction. This might involve noticing if the student is tired, bored or confused about the
task. Next, the teacher uses positive reinforcement such as praising the student for any effort
made to encourage them to get back on track. If needed, the teacher may also break the task
into smaller parts providing clear and simple instructions for each steps making it easier for
the student to understand and succeed.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors?

- The teacher reinforces positive behavior by using a combination of verbal praise, rewards
such as stickers or extra privileges, and positive reinforcement strategies like a behavior chart
or points system. This helps to motivate students to continue exhibiting good behavior and
creates a positive and supportive classroom environment.

REFLECT

1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

-Positive discipline is essential because it helps children develop self- control, responsibility, and
respect for others in a non-threatening manner. By enforcing positive discipline, I create a
supportive environment where children can learn and grown without fear of punishment. It also
teaches them important life skills that will benefit them as they grow older.

ANALYZE
Resource

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learner`s behavior?
- Classroom organization and routines helps in shaping a learner's behavior. When a classroom is
well-structured students feel secure and know what to expect. This consistency helps them focus
on their studies rather than worry about what will happen next. Clear routines also promote
responsibility as students learn to manage their time and tasks effectively. Overall, a well-
organized classroom encourages positive behavior and enhances learning outcomes.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines?
What theories and principles should you have in mind?
- When a teacher designs the classroom organization and routines, they should focus on creating a
positive and productive learning environment. It is important to consider the needs and abilities
of all students ensuring that everyone feels included and supported. Theories such as
constructivism highlight the importance of hands-on learning and collaboration among students.
Additionally, principles like clear communication and consistent routines can help students feel
secure and understand what is expected of them. By keeping these ideas in mind teachers can
foster a space where students can thrive academically and socially.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learner`s? In motivating
students? Why were they effective?
- Effective behavior strategies in managing learners included positive reinforcement, clear
expectations, and engaging activities. By using positive reinforcement, students felt recognized
for their efforts, boosting their motivation and encouraging them to repeat good behavior.
Establishing clear expectations helped create a structured environment where students knew
what was required of them, reducing confusion and off-task behavior. Additionally,
incorporating engaging and interactive activities kept students interested and invested in their
learning, making them more likely to participate actively. Together, these strategies promoted a
positive classroom atmosphere and motivated students to succeed.
REFLECT
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do you see yourself?
What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
- In organizing a future grade 10 classroom, it's important to establish clear routines and procedures
to create a positive learning environment. First, starting each day with a brief class meeting can
help set goals and expectations. Students should have assigned roles, like note-takers or group
leaders, to encourage teamwork and responsibility. Transitioning between activities smoothly,
perhaps with a timer, keeps everyone focused and on track. Additionally, having a clear system
for submitting assignments makes it easier for students to stay organized. By fostering respect,
accountability, and communication, the classroom can become a supportive space for all
learners.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level? Why would you choose these rules?
- In a grade 10 classroom, I would implement rules such as raising hands to speak, respecting
others' opinions, and being punctual. These rules are essential because they create a positive
learning environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts. Encouraging
respect helps foster teamwork and collaboration among students, while punctuality ensures that
we make the most of our time together. Additionally, having clear guidelines helps students
understand expectations and promotes responsibility.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

- Involving learners in making class rules can be very beneficial. When students contribute to the
rules, they feel a sense of ownership and responsibility, which can lead to better behavior and a
more positive classroom environment. Additionally, it encourages communication and
teamwork, allowing students to discuss their views and understand each other's perspectives.
This involvement can also help them learn important skills, such as negotiation and compromise,
which are useful in many areas of life. Overall, when students have a say in the rules, they are
more likely to respect and follow them.
