1. A block weighing 55 N rests on a horizontal floor.

(a) What is the minimum force

that will make the block move if the coefficient of static friction is 0.22? (b) What is
the minimum force that will keep the block moving at uniform speed once it starts
moving it the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.11?

2. A force of 150 N pushes a block. Starting from rest, the block achieves a velocity
of 1.5 m /s in t= 2.5s. If the weight of the block is 300N, find the coefficient of sliding
friction between the block and the floor.

3. A ladder 11m long leans against a vertical friction less wall with its lower end 4m
from the wall. The ladder weighs 39N. Find the magnitude and direction of the force
exerted on the lower end of the ladder.

4. Two blocks are positioned on surfaces, each inclined at the same angle of theta=
42.6 degrees with respect to the horizontal. The blocks are connected by a rope that
rests on a friction less pulley at the top of the inclines as shown so that the blocks
can slide together. The mass of the black block is 5.92kg, and the coefficient of
kinetic friction for both blocks and inclines is 0.230. Assume static friction has been
overcome and that everything can slide. What must be the white block’s mass if both
blocks are to slide to the right at an acceleration of 1.5m / s^2

5. A 1.50 kg book is sliding along a rough horizontal surface. At point A it is moving at

3.21 m/s, and at point B it has slowed to 1.25 m/s. (a) how much work was done on
the book between A and B? (b) if -0.750 J of work is done on the book from B to C,
how fast is it moving at point C? (c) How fast would it be moving at C if +0.750 J of
work was done on it from B to C ?

6. A crate of mass M starts from rest at the top of friction less ramp inclined at an
angle a above the horizontal. Using energy considerations, find its speed at the
bottom of the ramp, a distance d from where it started. Why didn’t the normal force
enter into your solution?

7. A block of mass m is initially at rest at the top of an inclined plane, which has a
height of 4.1 m and makes an angle of theta= 15 degrees with respect to the
horizontal. After being released, it is observed to be travelling at v= 0.2m/s a distance
d after the end of the inclined plane as shown. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and the plane is static p=0.1, and the coefficient friction on the
horizontal surface is static r= 0.2. Find the distance d, in meters.
