CHAPTERTHREE

3.1. METHODOLOGY

3.1.1. ResearchDesign
For the study, Research methodology should reflect the
understanding of the researcher in order to extract valuable results of the
study using various methods available, in single or combination form.
Methodology is a plan of action that shows how the problems are
investigated, what information are collected using which methods, and
how this information are analyzed in order to arrive at conclusions and
develop recommendations. Research follows some steps and procedures
when conducted. Once the problem statement has been formulated, it
should clearly portray the kind of data that is required, and the type of
analysis that is most appropriate to analyze the data. This chapter
describes research approaches with a view of selecting the most
appropriate methodology for the research project, including the research
strategy and justification of the methodology: the procedure used and
sampling techniques to achieve the objectives of the research. To
undertake this research, both descriptive and quantitative approach were
adopted. The objectives of the research is investigating the existing
performance of public building construction projects in Addis Ababa and
identifying critical factors that affect the performance of public projects..

3.2. Research Strategy
The strategy of this study gathered relevant and appropriate
information on the role of monitoring and evaluation for
success. The study employed both quantitative and
qualitative methods to collect primary and secondary data.
Relevant data and information was gathered from top
management of construction companies, contractors, country
inspectors, national government officials and project owner’s.
The primary and secondary sources helped to triangulate data
from different perspectives regarding the research problem.
The secondary sources of information used to provide the
conceptual framework and acquire a general picture of the
problem.
3.2.1. Target Population
The target total populations of the study are contractors,
consultants and the client the study mainly focuses on those
who have a greater impact on the construction, material
provision, planning and controlling side. According to data
obtained from AAHCPO project 5 site there are 2 project
managers, 8 engineers, and 6 procurement department heads
(a total of 16 staff), 30 contractors and 12 consulting firms
were get involved in the construction of condominium
projects. That means the target population of To achieve this
research and to answer the research questions of the study this
study were a total of 58 engineers, mangers, and procurement
staff from the contractors, consultants and client‘s.
3.2.2Sample Size
To determine the sample size, the study used Yamane‘s,
(1967) sample size determination formula with a confidence
level 95% as described below. It gives the researcher an idea
of how large the sample size needs to be ensured a reasonable
accuracy of results. The formula and its replicable meaning set
below:
Sample size n= (N/1+N(e)2 )
Where n= number of samples,
N= total population and
e= margin of error tolerance; i.e= 0.05
3.1.1. Datacollectionandinstrument
The researches have employed two ways of data collection
methodologies. There is primary data collection which includes
self-administrated questionnaire source was used.
Primary source of data: includes the information gathered
through questionnaires distributed to employers, contractors
and consultants. The questionnaire is prepared in English and
consists of open and close ended questions.

Secondary source of data: includes written materials such as

literatures, archival documents was used. And other document
which is relevant to the study. The researchers use questioner
as a method of data gathering tools.

3.1.2. Methodofdataanalysis
After the relevant data collected it processed through edition,
coding, classify and analyzed. The data analysis process was
based on descriptive form of data analysis method. Closed
ended questions were analyzed by tables and percentages.
Response that were collected by open- ended questions and
unstructured interview analyzed by coherent and easily
understandable manner.
3.1.3. Datapresentationandinterpretation
The data was presented by using tables, figures and charts.
Descriptive statistics was employed to examine the findings of
the study.

Descriptive Analysis- Sugiyono (2013) states that descriptive

analysis is a statistic that is used to describe or describe
collected data. The presentation method is in the form of tables,
graphs, or diagrams. Descriptive analysis can be in the form of
data, average, number of data values, lowest data values, and
high data values. Soepono (1997) states that descriptive
statistics are used to provide the most frequently presented data
(mode) of each parameter discussed and presented in the form
of tables. Descriptive statistics are also used to organize and
summarize data obtained from the results of data collection in
the field.
3.1.4. LimitationandConsiderations
Inconductingthisresearch wesuspectseveralproblems,someofthemare:
● No willengless respondent for data collection
● Lack of enough time to collect data
● Lack of recorded data and other related once
● Less cooperation and unwillingness to fill questionnaires
● We make sure the Voluntary participation of respondents in the
research
● We make sure the Respondents participation should be based on
informed consent
3.1.5. Validityandverification

To ensure validity and reliability of the research, variables are

comprehensively defined. This also helps to reduce
misunderstandings thus to increase the reliability of the
measuring instruments. Thus, all thedata acquired fromdifferent
sources compared and crosschecked. Besides, toensure
reliability of the data, the questionnaires were tested prior to
distribute to the intended respondents. The questions then
amended based on the comment collected from those who
participated in the test.
The validity ofthedata was alsotested by
lettingthequestionnaires reviewed by agroup ofexperts in the
field of the study. They were requested to identify the internal
validity and to what extent it is suitable to be used as an
instrument to realize the goals and aims of this research. The
panel ensured that the items adequately represented concepts
that covered all relevant issues under investigation.
