Light- Reflection & Refraction
1. Answer the following questions:- (1 x 10 = 10)
a. What is light?
b. What is the number of images of an object held between two plane parallel mirrors?
c. Which mirror always produces a virtual, erect and diminished image of an object?
d. Define refractive index of a medium.
e. State the mirror formula.
f. State Snell’s law of refraction of light.
g. What is lens? How many types of lens are there?
h. If the image formed by a convex lens is of the same size as that of the object, what is the
position of the image with respect to the lens?
i. Define power of lens. Name its unit.
j. A lens has a power of -2.5D. What is the focal length & nature of lens?
2. Answer the following questions:- (2 x 5 = 10)
a. Two thin lenses of power +3.5D and -2.5D are placed in contact. Find the power & focal
length of the lens combination.
b. State the law of refraction with suitable figure.
c. Why a convex lens is called a converging lens and a concave lens a diverging lens?
d. Define (any 2): centre of curvature, principle focus and aperture.
e. The speed of light in air is 3 x 10 8 m/s. if the refractive index of glass 1.5; find the time
taken by light to travel a distance of 10 cm in glass?
3. Answer the following questions:- (3 x 5 = 15)
a. An object 2 cm high is placed at a distance of 64 cm from the screen. On placing a
convex lens 32 cm from the object it is found that a distinct image of the object is
formed on the screen. What is the focal length of the convex lens and size of the image
formed on the screen? Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image in this
position of the object with respect to the lens.
b. Write 3 uses of concave lens.
c. What is reflection of light? On which factor does the refractive index of a medium
depends?
d. An object 5 cm in length is placed at a distance of 20 cm in front of a convex mirror of
radius of curvature 30 cm. find the position of the image, its nature and size.
e. What is magnification? Write its formula. Define real and virtual image.
