K1. A 1200kg car travelling initially at vCi = 25.3m/s in an easterly direction crashes
into the back of a 8800kg truck moving in the same direction at vTi = 20.1m/s. The
velocity of the car immediately after the collision is vCf = 18.7m/s to the east.

a) What is the velocity of the truck immediately after the collision? [2 points]
b) What is the change in mechanical energy of the car-truck system in the
collision? [3 points]

K2. A grenade of mass 1.2kg is at rest on a smooth frictionless surface. After the
grenade explodes, a 0.50kg piece flies off to the north at 3.0m/s, and a second
piece of mass 0.30kg flies off to the southwest at 4.0m/s. Find the velocity
(magnitude and direction) of the third piece of the exploded grenade. [5 points]
K3. A mass m is attached to a spring with a spring constant k and undergoes simple
harmonic motion. A mass m1 is now attached to m, and the period of oscillation is
recorded as T1. The mass m1 is removed and a new mass m2 is attached to m, and the
period of oscillation is recorded as T2. What are masses m, m1 and m2 if
k = 100N/m, T1 = 2.13s, T2 = 1.55s and β ≡ m2/m1 = 0.40? [5 points]

C1. Two clay balls of equal mass and speed strike each other head-on, stick together
and come to rest. Kinetic energy is not conserved. What happened to it? Is
momentum conserved? Explain your answer. [2 points]
A1. A puck of mass m, moving at a speed of v1 collides with an identical mass
stationary puck. After the collision, one puck moves off at an angle φ1 with a
speed of v1’, and the other puck moves off at an angle φ2 with a speed of v2’.

a) What are the speeds v1’ and v2’ if φ1 + φ2 = 90o? Express your answers in terms of
v1 and φ1. [3 points]
b) Is the collision inelastic or (totally) elastic? Support your answer with a
calculation. [2 points]

A2. A pendulum of mass m and length L is initially at rest at an angle θ. The pendulum
then swings down and collides elastically with a stationary block of mass M. The
block slides along the surface and eventually stops when it encounters a rough
patch of length |∆d|.

Assume that m = 1.7kg, L = 0.80m, θ = 67o, M = 2.8kg and |∆d| = 0.55m.

a) Calculate the speed of the block immediately after the elastic collision.
[2 points]
b) What is the coefficient of kinetic friction of the rough patch? [3 points]
