K1. Two girls are trying to pull a 20kg toboggan out of deep snow that gives an
opposing force of 8.0N. They are using ropes attached to the toboggan and parallel
to the ground. Find the acceleration (magnitude and direction) of the toboggan at
the instant it starts to move. [5 points]
K2. Three blocks on a frictionless horizontal surface are in contact with each other.
A force F is applied to the first block.
a) What is the acceleration of the system? [1 point]
b) What are the forces of contact between the first and second block, and the
second block and third block? [2 points]
c) What is the net force acting on each block? [2 points]
Choose |F| = 12N, m1 = 2.3kg, m2 = 1.2kg and m3 = 3.7kg.
K3. Masses m1, m2, m3 and δm are connected together as shown in the figure below.
All the surfaces are smooth. If m1 = 3.2kg, m2 = 2.8kg, m3 = 3.8kg, δm = 1.3kg and
θ = 55o, calculate
a) the acceleration of the system; [3 points]
b) the normal force between m3 and δm. [2 points]
C1. Which pulls harder gravitationally, the Earth on the Moon, or the Moon on the
Earth? Which accelerates more? Explain. [2 points]
A1. A mass is given an initial speed v0 up an inclined rough ramp.
The time for the mass to come to rest up the ramp is tup. The mass then returns
down the ramp in time tdown. If tup = 2.1s, tdown = 3.5s and θ = 20o, what is the
coefficient of kinetic friction of the rough ramp? [5 points]
A2. A block weighing 80N rests on a plane inclined at 20o to the horizontal. The
coefficient of static friction is 0.25, while the coefficient of kinetic friction
is 0.15.
a) What is the minimum force |F|, parallel to the plane, that will prevent the
block slipping down the plane? [2 points]
b) What is the minimum force |F| that will start the block moving up the plane?
[2 points]
c) What force |F| is required to move the block up the plane at constant speed?
[1 point]
A3. A model airplane of mass m flies with a speed |v| in a horizontal circle at the
end of a control wire of length L.
a) Draw a free-body diagram for the force acting on the plane. Assume that the
aerodynamic lift force acts in a direction perpendicular to the wings of the
airplane, and that the wire is at an angle θ below the horizontal. [2 points]
b) Calculate the lift and tension forces if m = 0.750kg, |v| = 35.0m/s, L = 60.0m
and θ = 20.0o. [3 points]
