4. A charge of 1𝜇𝐶 on a small sphere of mass 1𝜇𝑔 is placed in a uniform electric field of 3𝑁𝐶 −1.
Calculate the acceleration produced by this field
5. A charge of 2 𝜇𝐶 is placed at a point in space. Calculate the electric field intensity at a point 0.5m
away.

6. a) Define electric field intensity. Highlight the relationship between electric field intensity and
electrostatic force?
b) Derive the expression for the electric field intensity at a point due to a point charge 𝑞 separated by
a distance 𝑟.
c) Two charges 𝑞1 = +4𝜇𝐶 and 𝑞2 = −6𝜇𝐶 are separated by a distance of 3 𝑚 in a vacuum.
i. Find the magnitude of the force between them using Coulomb’s law.
ii. State whether the force is attractive or repulsive
iii. Evaluate the work required to move charge 𝑞1 at potential of 200mV
7. a) i. Briefly explain the concept of charging by friction. Give an example
ii. Consider three isolated electric charges A, B and C. When they are brought close to each other, the
electric charges A and B attract each other and B and C repel each other. Determine the possible charges
of A, B and C. What would happen when A and C are brought close together?
b) A glass rod is rubbed with a silk cloth. The glass rod acquires a charge of +19.2𝑥10−19 𝐶
i. What is the magnitude of negative charge acquired by the silk?
ii. Determine the number of electrons lost by glass rod
c) Compute the force of attraction between sodium and chlorine ions in salt molecules if each ion
carries one electron charge and the separation is 2.8𝑥 10−10 𝑚?
8. a) Describe the phenomenon of electrostatic induction. Discuss its applications in real-life situations,
such as in the working of a lightning conductor.
b) Calculate the work done in moving a charge of 2μC from a point at a potential of 200 V to another
point at a potential of 150 V.
c) Two electrons are separated by a distance of 𝑟 = 1.0𝑛𝑚.
i. Calculate the magnitude of the electric force between the two electrons.
ii. Calculate the magnitude of the gravitational force between the two electrons.
iii. Find the ratio of the electric to gravitational force
iv. Interpret what this ratio signifies about the relative strengths of the electric and gravitational
forces.
