Course Description
This course introduces you to theoretical and practical applications in Biochemistry, and prepares
students for employment in food, pharmaceutical, and beverage manufacturing as well as government
and private laboratories. The theory focuses on important molecules found in living systems. These
concepts are then applied in the laboratory. Skills developed in prior courses (Analytic and Organic
Chemistry) will be further developed upon in this course.

Program Outcomes
Successful completion of this and other courses in the program culminates in the achievement of the
Vocational Learning Outcomes (program outcomes) set by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities in the
Program Standard. The VLOs express the learning a student must reliably demonstrate before

Course Learning Outcomes


The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe the structures and functions of all cellular components. A discussion of water and buffer
and their properties will also be included
2. Explain the structure, function and chemistry of all biomolecules. DNA replication and protein
synthesis will also be included
3. An introduction to Enzyme function and Kinetics
4. Draw structural formulas including Fischer and Haworth projection formulas for these basic
biomolecules and their derivatives
5. Relate the physical characteristics and behavior of biomolecules to their molecular structure
6. Predict chemical reactions on the basis of their structural and molecular formulas
7. Document experimental data in a variety of reports as outlined in the laboratory manual
8. Apply a variety of lab skills during lab activities in a safe and responsible manner
9. Interpret and validate experimental data to develop appropriate conclusions

advice. In exceptional and well documented circumstances (e.g. unforeseen family problems, serious
illness, or death of a close family member), students may be able to write a make-up test.

All submitted work may be reviewed for authenticity and originality utilizing Turnitin®. Students who do not
wish to have their work submitted to Turnitin® must, by the end of the second week of class,
communicate this in writing to the instructor and make mutually agreeable alternate arrangements.

When writing tests, students must be able to produce official Centennial College photo identification or
they may be refused the right to take the test or test results will be void.

Tests or assignments conducted remotely may require the use of online proctoring technology where the
student’s identification is verified and their activity is monitored and/or recorded, both audibly and visually
through remote access to the student's computer and web camera. Students must communicate in writing
to the instructor as soon as possible and prior to the test or assignment due date if they require an
alternate assessment format to explore mutually agreeable alternatives.

• Attendance in all laboratory sessions is mandatory.
• Students are required to attend at least 80% of lectures
• Students require a locker. Contact Enrolment Services for rental at Morningside campus.
• Students require a full-length laboratory coat and flat-soled shoes with closed toes and heels.
• Safety glasses will occasionally be required.
• Students must adhere to the SETAS “Lab Responsibilities and Safety Policies”.
• Students are required to be familiar with and adhere to all Biohazard Level 2 Laboratory Safety Rules
when working in the laboratory. Students who are absent during experimental procedures will not be
permitted to hand in the corresponding reports. The marks for these reports will not be available to these

students.
• Students will not be permitted to enter the laboratory without a copy of the appropriate lab protocol(s)
each week.
• Students must obtain at least 50% in the theory component and at least 50% in the laboratory
component to successfully pass this course.
• A grade of C (60%) in this subject is required for entry into the 3rd year of the Technologist program.
• A grade of C (60%) in this subject is required for graduation from the Technologist (Advanced) Diploma.
• A grade of C (60%) in this subject is required for entry into and graduation from the 3rd year of the
Technologist program.

Students must complete laboratory maintenance and monitoring duty to the satisfaction of the professor
and lab technologist. Students are required to attend all labs and 80% of lectures: attendance will be
taken. The labs are usually performed in groups of two students. Usually, the tasks required for each lab
will be divided up within the group. Results are to be shared within the group and are reported by each
student. In the report, it should be stated which results are produced by the author and which ones were
generated by co-workers.

• Students must complete laboratory maintenance and monitoring duty to the satisfaction of the professor
and lab technologist. A failing (F) grade will be assigned if lab duties are not completed satisfactorily.
Marks may be deducted for lab reports submitted after the due date at a rate of 10% per day (weekends
included.
• Laboratory reports are due one week after the exercise has been completed.
• Laboratory schedule is tentative and may vary due to unforeseen circumstances. As a result, topics and
experiments may be added, deleted or rearranged.
