Thesis topics
From Dr Amal:
Topic 1- A cross platform AR tool for architecture exhibitions (In collaboration with Dr Maha
Hosny)
Description:
In this project, we build an AR application that work on different platforms. The application
supports Narrative approach to exhibition design. We will apply it on archituectural exhibitions
where will allow AR to help the attendees explore the 3D models relevant to other modaltieites
such as textual posters. This project is part of a collaboration with Dr. Maha Hosny, GIU Faculty
of Architectural Engineering.
Topic 2- Augmented Reality for biotechnology education (In collaboration with Dr Marwa Hany)
Description:
Chemistry is complicated especially when scientists need to explain new compounds to
students. Augmented reality makes the task much easier by allowing efficient and affordable
interactive stories that mix 3D models with other modalities. In this project we will build an
augmented reality application that helps scientists to explain and understand a newly invented
compound. We also learn interesting state-of-the art frameworks which mix several
programming and visualization skills. . This project is part of a collaboration with Dr. Marwa
Hani, Faculty of Biotechnology, GIU.
Topic 3- Data Handling for drug discovery using deep learning (In collaboration with Dr Marwa
Hany)
Description:
What if we can create medicine using machine learning? No doubt it will be great! This way we
can take a step towards addressing some local and global challenges in the field of healthcare
such as: lack of medicine due to time, affordability, and costs In this project, we will learn
several relevant skills: the type of data and preprocessing that can be used in this problem and
some of the neural networks and other machine learning methods that are used to train and
predict this type of data. This will be done through a real state-of-the art benchmark datasets.
We will also learn how to analyze the results and understand how the predicted compounds can
be transformed into realistic ones that are created in laboratories. This project is part of a
collaboration with Dr. Marwa Hani, Faculty of Biotechnology, GIU in the scope of the project of
“Design and Synthesis of Medications against infectious diseases with focus on Tuberculosis”
Topic 4- Developing a new 3D image processing for microscopy data (Based on collaboration
with Elettra Sincrotrone Italy)
Description:
In this project, we will implement a new filter on 3D big images produced from microscopy data.
We will go through the whole process starting from user analysis until final production. We will
deploy the implemented fiter as part of an exisiting opensource framework that is currently
used by several users around the word.
Topic5- Enhancing the user experience of 3D image processing with Visualization (based on
collaboration with Elettra Sincrotrone Italy)
Description:
In this project, we will implement a new visualizations on 3D big images produced from
microscopy data. We will go through the whole process starting from user analysis until final
production. We will deploy the implemented techniques as part of an exisiting opensource
framework that is currently used by several users around the word
Topic 6- Enhancing the User Experience for building new architectural models in virtual reality
(In collaboration with Dr Maha Hosny)
Description:
In this project, we will work on an interesting problem that commonly face architects: how to
test the user Spatial Perception in architectural designs while it is still under research and
progress. We will build an application in Virtual Reality that help architects to test a new lighting
and material scheme on users and try different options. This project is part of a collaboration
with Dr. Maha Hosny, GIU Faculty of Architectural Engineering.
Topic7- New open source tools for 3D image processing of microscopy data (based on
collaboration with Elettra Sincrotrone Italy)
Description:

Topic 8- Towards automatic labeling for Oil and Gas flaring deep learning models
Description: In this project, we are collaborating with industry represnatives to solve one of the
problems needed by the oil and gas vendors. Oil and gas vendors need to provide reports to the
authorities proving the safety of their process. This is usually done by tracking the quality of the
smoke and flare produced from the waste burning process. There are several challenges with
using traditional sensors. In this project, we will explore how we can use AI to analyze the
images of the fire and smoke and automatically detect helpgul predictions about the quality of
the flaring process. This project is in collaboration with AvidBeam.
Topic 9- User friendly Interfaces for drug discovery using deep learning (In collaboration with Dr
Marwa Hany)
Description:
What if we can create medicine using machine learning? No doubt it will be great! This way we
can take a step towards addressing some local and global challenges in the field of healthcare
such as: lack of medicine due to time, affordability, and costs In this project, we will learn an
interesting framework which uses deep learning to predict new compounds that are actually
synthesized in the lab. We will learn several aspects during this framework such as data
processing, relevant deep learning techniques for training and prediction, and we will suggest an
interface to allow scientists analyze the results. We will also learn how to analyze the results and
understand how the predicted compounds can be transformed into realistic ones that are
created in laboratories. This project is part of a collaboration with Dr. Marwa Hani, Faculty of
Biotechnology, GIU on the project of “Design and Synthesis of Medications against infectious
diseases with focus on Tuberculosis”
