A NOTE FROM THE PROVOST

It is my pleasure to introduce to you this updated

handbook of the Postgraduate College, University of
Ibadan, the flagship of postgraduate education in
Nigeria. The first edition of this handbook was published
in 2011 when the college was still referred to as the
Postgraduate School. Following our upgrade to a
college status in 2018 and attendant changes with the
growth of the university's postgraduate education, we
see the need to update this handbook in order to make it
relevant to the contemporary time. This second edition
contains facts, figures and updated information about the Postgraduate
College.
The University of Ibadan retains her commitment to unparalleled
excellence in teaching, research and community service. Our pedigree within
the international community lies in our increased competence to excel in
these three domains. This handbook documents our vision, procedures,
growth and impact stories recorded over the years.
In order to help enhance the overall development of every student, this
handbook also contains vital information on recreational/social facilities
within the University Campus itself and around the Ibadan metropolis. Our
goal is to encourage all Postgraduate students to take advantage of these
facilities as well as the various religious facilities and worship centres for a
holistic postgraduate experience.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN (UI)

UI Main Gate

Congratulations on your admission to the University of Ibadan, the Great

UI! Welcome to the paths trodden by several generations of great women and
men. Here is a brief history of UI which is meant to connect you with our rich
past, link you with our richer present and prepare you to be part of our
glorious future.
Established in 1948, the University of Ibadan, UI as it is fondly referred
to, is the first University in Nigeria. Until 1962 when it became a full-fledged
independent University, it was a College of the University of London in a
special relationship scheme. Today, the University has a total enrolment of
over 26,000 students shared among 17 different faculties: Arts, Science,
Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Agriculture, The Social Sciences,
Education, Veterinary Medicine, Technology, Pharmacy, Law, Public Health,
Dentistry, Economics and Management Sciences, Renewable Natural
Resources, Environmental Design and Management, and Multidisciplinary
Studies; the University of Ibadan School of Business; and two institutes:
Institute of African Studies and Institute of Education. Opportunity exists
for interested candidates to run programmes on Open Distance Learning
mode, where applicable.

11 ...the flagship of postgraduate education in Nigeria

The University of Ibadan Postgraduate college is, well acknowledged
within and outside the country as one of the largest in Africa and the flagship
of postgraduate education in Nigeria as it produces the much required
human resources for the entire Nigerian University system, the Nigerian
public and private sectors and beyond. The Postgraduate College enrolment
takes about 50% of the entire student enrolment. University of Ibadan
produces an average of 3,000 Masters and 250 Ph.Ds every year. The
University currently hosts the Pan African University Life and Earth
Sciences Institute on behalf of the West African Subregion. This is an
initiative of the African Union. The programme is in its 8th year and has 235
students from all over Africa. The main thrust of the University for the 21st
century is to be world-class institution for academic excellence geared
towards meeting societal needs. Today, the University is consistently ranked
among the prestigious Universities in the world.
There are twelve Halls of Residence which provide accommodation for
about 30% of the population of all students in the regular studies mode. In
addition, there are three private halls of residence to cater for the needs of
students of different categories. The University has housing units occupied
by senior and junior staff. The University of Ibadan is, therefore, a truly
complex organisation. Its governance is based on the Committee System; all
the Boards and Committees report to Council and/or Senate. In order to carry
out its main functions of teaching, research and community service, the
University has been providing to a large extent, basic services like electricity
and water supply, security, health facilities and other municipal services to
its staff and students.
Through its alumni and alumnae, the University of Ibadan has, in the
past over seven decades, contributed significantly to the political, industrial,
economic and cultural development of Nigeria. These graduates, staff and
students are making great impact on the world through their new discoveries,
innovations and inventions in science, medicine, agriculture, business and
technology. No doubt, the University's commitment to academic excellence
enables them to fly high.
UI looks forward to an exciting future!

UI's Rich Traditions
UI is proud of her rich traditions. Although the University is centrally
governed, each faculty has its colour, costumes and practices some of which
are decades old. Each degree has its own costume and colours. Following

THE POSTGRADUATE COLLEGE
UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA
...the flagship of postgraduate education in Nigeria

Under a special arrangement with the University of London, UI began

postgraduate training shortly after it came into existence. Thus, the first Ph.D
was awarded in Zoology in 1952 to Dr Sanya Dojo Onabamiro. During the 14
years that the special relationship lasted, 37 Postgraduate Diplomas, 18
Master and 44 Doctoral degrees were awarded. The degrees bore the name of
the University of London.
With the termination of the special relationship in 1962, UI began fully
independent postgraduate studies. It admitted 101 students for such studies

25 ...the flagship of postgraduate education in Nigeria

in 1962. The number rose sharply in the years that followed. For instance,
216 students were admitted in 1965. In 1964, two doctoral degrees were
awarded in the then world-famous Department of History.
Given the rapid growth of postgraduate studies, the University Senate
set up a central body, the Higher Degree Committee, in 1963, to coordinate
all postgraduate programmes. The volume of work coming from the
faculties, however, soon became too heavy for the Committee. As a result, in
1970, Senate established Board of Postgraduate Studies to replace the
Higher Degree Committee. The Board had the power to exercise its own
initiative in the development of postgraduate studies in the University. That
Board was headed by Professor A. I. Etteh of the Department of Physics.
In 1975, the Federal Government designated UI as the Centre of
Excellence for postgraduate studies in Nigeria. This was in direct agreement
with the dream which had been declared and nursed by Prof Kenneth Dike in
1962 when UI began fully-Ul postgraduate studies. With the new designation,
it became clear that the Board of Postgraduate Studies needed fresh mandate
and space. On June 28, 1976, Senate approved the re-organisation of the
Board of Postgraduate School into a School of Postgraduate Studies. The
title 'chairman' of the Board became 'Dean'. The serving Chairman of the
Board, Prof A. I. Etteh then became the pioneer Dean of the Postgraduate
School, University of Ibadan.
Decades after the PG School was officially inaugurated, it continues to
dictate the pace in postgraduate studies in Nigeria and in sub-Saharan Africa.
Applications for admission into its various programmes pour in thousands
every year. For instance, in November 2010, it graduated 2,589 candidates
including 159 Ph.Ds. The establishment of private universities in the country
has meant much greater demand for postgraduate education and, of course,
greater pressure on the University of Ibadan PG School for admission.
Fortunately, the PG School and UI are up to the task.
Due to the increase in student enrolment and enlargement of the
Postgraduate School activities, Senate recommended its re-organisation to a
College on 3 August, 2018. This recommendation was approved by the

www.pgcollege.ui.edu.ng 26
University Governing Council on 5 October, 2018. Since then, the status of
the Postgraduate School was upgraded to that of a College. At present, the
College has about fifteen thousand registered postgraduate students in the
university.
The Postgraduate College, as presently structured, comprises postgraduate
teachers based in the University departments and their inputs into the decision-
making process of the college made through their respective Deans and Sub-
Deans (Postgraduate) of Faculties Representatives, and the Heads of
Departments who are the Chief Examiners of departmental postgraduate
examinations.
The management of the Postgraduate College is vested in the Board of
the Postgraduate College and the Executive Committee, both bodies being
statutorily headed by the Provost. The structure and philosophy behind the
establishment of the Postgraduate College by Senate evolved over the years
after a series of deliberations by many committees set up both at Faculties
and the Postgraduate College levels. The structure essentially makes the
College a central coordinating body, which acts on behalf of Senate to
streamline and harmonise University postgraduate regulations and programmes
in addition to ensuring maintenance of the culture of excellence in
postgraduate training and research across the faculties in the University.
Furthermore, the Postgraduate College is actively involved in the
initiation and development of new relevant inter-faculty postgraduate
programmes and in the active search for sources of funding and support for
the enlarged postgraduate programmes that makes the University very
relevant to its environment. Since its establishment, thirteen Deans and the
first Provost have headed the school (now college).

of the entire body of students of the
University. All registered students are
members of the Union by payment of an
annual subscription directly to the Union.
However, following a recent government
policy, student unionism is voluntary.
The Union serves as an effective means

STUDENT ORGANISATIONS, ASSOCIATIONS AND CLUBS
There are numerous student religious' and academic societies; and activities
clubs catering for a wide variety of interests, through which a student may
manifest his/her feelings, attitudes and seek out relief from purely academic
life. Among these are Muslim Student Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Ibadan
Varsity Christian Union (IVCU), Sigma club, Junior Chambers International
(JCI), All Nigeria United Nations and Youth Association (ANUNSA), the
Literary and Debating Society and a number of others. A full list of duly
registered student's clubs and organisations is available at the Student
Affairs Division.

Muslim Students' Society, UI

The Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria (MSSN) was founded in Lagos,
Nigeria on 18th April, 1954, in response to the yearnings of Muslim students
for a platform to discuss and find solutions to their common problems and
challenges. The Secretariat of the MSSN, UI Branch, is located within the UI
Central mosque on Sapara Road.

www.pgcollege.ui.edu.ng 40
RESIDENTIAL LIFE AND HOUSING
The University has three postgraduate halls of residence within a walking
distance of the University Library. Only bonafide registered students
(except sub-degree students) of the University are allowed to live in Halls of
residence. Accommodation in halls of residence is a privilege and not a right
since the demand for hall accommodation far exceeds the number of
available bed spaces. All rooms are therefore allocated to qualified students
on the basis of first-come first-served. The system of accommodation is that
of two or three students sharing a room in accordance with architectural
design. Resident students must abide by the rules and regulations governing
all residents in each hall. Unlike in the undergraduate housing system where
male and female students are housed in different halls, all postgraduate halls
house both male and female students but in separate blocks.

Tafawa Balewa Hall

Tafawa Balewa Hall is located along El-Kanemi Road and directly behind
Sultan Bello Hall. Tafawa Balewa Hall is the University's first postgraduate
hall of residence. It was opened in 1968. The hall has a capacity for 207
students.

41 ...the flagship of postgraduate education in Nigeria

Obafemi Awolowo Hall

Obafemi Awolowo Hall is located off Barth Road. It was made an autonomous
hall of residence in February 1986. It currently houses about 700 students
on the average. Some of the blocks in Awolowo Hall are occupied by
undergraduate students.

Abdulsalami Abubakar Hall

www.pgcollege.ui.edu.ng 42
Abdulsalami Abubakar Hall is located along Barth Road, and opposite Idia
Hall. The building was kindly donated to the University during her 50th
Anniversary in 1998. The hall houses about 700 postgraduate students in
single-, double- and three- bedded rooms.
The Lodging office assists in securing off-campus accommodation near
the University campus for those unable to secure accommodation in the halls
of residence.

INTRA-CAMPUS TRANSPORTATION

Transportation on campus is by campus cabs, private cars, tricycles and

trekking. A few students ride bicycles and private motorcycles. It costs about
N I00 – N 150 to hire a car from any part of the campus to another. To join in a
car costs N30 – N50. You can identify a campus cab by the yellow sign it
carries on its roof. Commercial tricycles run in the morning through the
evening hours. The cost of a ride depends on the distance, the time of the day
or night, and your bargaining skills. The maximum may be about N150.
Many students trek across campus. The renovation of walk-ways has made
trekking easier and safer.

43 ...the flagship of postgraduate education in Nigeria

FEEDING/CATERING FACILITIES

Reputed caterers provide catering services in each hall of residence and

within some departments and most faculties in the University. Students buy
their food on the basis of what they can afford. Each cafeteria opens at
7.00a.m and closes at 9.00p.m daily. Food is also available at U & I, a fast
foods outlet that belongs to the UI Ventures. Commissioned in May 2004, U
& I is located beside Abdulsalami Abubakar Hall. Its services include the
production and sales of all pastry foods, continental and African dishes, as
well as catering services. U & I also has a small hall for which students and
staff can pay and hold parties during the day.

LIBRARY FACILITIES

www.pgcollege.ui.edu.ng 44
The University of Ibadan confers on the Library the responsibility of providing
information resources (books, journals, reports, monographs, electronic
based materials etc.) in support of its teaching and research mandates.
Pursuant to the actualization of this responsibility the University maintains a
Library System with Kenneth Dike Library (KDL) as the main library or
arrow head of the system. Other Libraries in the system are Latunde Odeku
Medical Library which is located about eight (8) kilometres at the College of
Medicine, 26 faculty, Departmental and Institute Libraries. The collections
of these Libraries consist of books, journals, dissertations, technical reports
and monographs including materials of historical nature such as the
Africana collections. In recent times, and as part of the global shift from
hardcopy information prints to electronic based ones, the Library decided to
subscribe to a number of electronic databases consisting of journals,
monograph and reports. Some of these databases are JSTOR, AGORA,
HINARI, OARE etc.
Access to the databases is Internet Protocol (lP) address controlled. This
means that they can be accessed by logging into the University network
while on the Campus. Outside the campus, the individual can access them
through passwords which the Library restricts. All users must be registered
every academic session and are issued with reader's tickets. The Library is
open from 8.00a.m to 10.00p.m on weekdays; 8.00a.m to l.00p.m on Saturdays
and 5.00p.m to 10.00p.m on Sundays during sessions. During semester
breaks and long vacations, the library is open from 8.00a.m to 6.00p.m on
