MODULE 2

NURSING LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT

Activity 2-1
Examine the policies in your place of work. Discuss which policies are favourable/unfavourable to you
as nurse manager/health worker.
-In a hospital, it is easy to know that all policies are beneficial to both workers and patients because hospital’s
ultimate goal is to improve patient health outcomes. I believe that one of my favourable policies is the
recognition and reward system. While not all hospitals may have such policy, it is highly effective in giving
credit to hardworking nurses and other health care workers. This helps them feel valued and appreciated. Even
in a simple gesture of recognition can inspire nurses to work harder, knowing there are people who believe and
acknowledge their efforts. Unfavourable policy for me is the inadequate staffing which is very common in our
country.

SAQ 2-1
1. Describe an ethical problem that you face in your work?
-The ethical problem I experience is respecting patient autonomy, it is the right of the patient to decide
about their own life, including having control to their own suffering. Many people who cannot afford
treatment choose to stop their care, which is heartbreaking. But as a student nurse we must respect
their decision while continuing to provide compassionate care to other patients, even though it is
emotionally challenging.

2. Explain how the above problem/issue is being addressed or resolved?

-As I mentioned, we cannot do anything about that expect to respect their decision, as it is ultimately
their own choice.

SAQ 2-2
Before going to the next section try answering these questions.
1. Define malpractice.
- Malpractice refers to a negligence or misconduct of a professional that causes harm to people who are
under their responsibility.

2. Define informed consent.

- It is a process where patients are given a clear understandable information about his/her condition
including their medical condition, treatment options and possible risks, benefits and alternatives. It
upholds the principle of the patient autonomy to decide about their own health, it protects them to
unwanted medical treatments or procedure.

3. Cite an example of an unfair labor practice. Describe work related issues (if there are any) in
your work situation. As a nurse manager/administrator, what do you plan to do about them?
Under-staffing- is one the most well-known issue, especially here in the Philippines, where nurse
shortage is common. It can lead to poor delivery of healthcare because it caused excessive stress due
to increased workload. As a nurse learning to manage time and distribute task properly is a must to
have an effective workplace for nurses.
Lack of Breaks- I know that being a nurse we should commit to what we do. But sometimes lack of
breaks can cause physical and mental exhaustion that can also lead to negative impact to patients.

SAQ 2-3
1. What legal doctrines or statues protect the nurse in the practice of his/her profession?
- The resipa loquitor or the things to speak for itself here these allows nurses to chance to prove his or
herself by undergoing to conditions.

2. What legal doctrines or statues protect the patient for mal-practice and negligence professional
staff?
- Legal doctrine that can protect the patient for mal-practice is under the doctrine of respondeat
superior or the vicarious liability. According to this, the employer is held legally responsible for the
wrongful acts of employees. This means that if an employee makes a mistake while doing her job, the
employee is responsible for covering the damages.

3. How can health professional can actively lobby for fair labour practices?
-Effective time management and fair distribution of work is essential for creating a productive and
harmonious workplace that can effectively lobby for fair labour. Fairly distribution of work prevents
burnouts and ensures that all team are contributing equally and feel valued. Aside from time
management and fair distribution of labour, in order to create better solution for improvement.

4. What do you think of the bill on “mal-practice law” being put in the Philippine Congress?
- I think the mal-practice law both can protect the patient and us nurses or any other health care
professionals. Since it should be investigated deeply and aim to provide mechanism of victims and
compensation to health care provider if ever. The mal-practice law will benefit the health care system
to be more cautious and meet the duties and standars.

SAQ 2-4
1. What cultural diversity/issues have you encountered in your own setting?
-The most common cultural issue I encounter is about health beliefs and practices, especially regarding
traditional medicine. Traditional medicine is common among people who may not always have access
to medical care, leading them to use alternative treatments, which can sometimes result to worsening
their condition and causes conflicts and misunderstanding about treatment plan.

2. How did you address this issue?
-The best approach to this issue is to provide clear information and educate patients about the
importance of adhering to treatment plan. Offer information respectfully, without invalidating their
beliefs, while ensuring they understand your concerns.

3. Find out about Leininger’s proposal of Transcultural Nursing as an answer to cultural diversity.
-Leininger’s Transcultural Nursing is about focusing on cultural aspects of care and seeks to
understand and incorporate cultural beliefs, values and practices into healthcare. Leininger’s provides
the importance of awareness and being responsive to patient’s cultural background, to have a effective
and holistic care. Respecting their values and needs to deliver a culturally sensitive method of care.
