INS 4031E Dynamics of Structures Istanbul Technical Univer<sity

Fall 2024/2025 Civil Engineering Department

HW # 1 (Due to: 1 November, 2024)

(Think Simple!!)
Q1. Find the fundamental period of the RC frame system given below.
m=135 ton, E=3.0e7 kN/m2, Columns: 30cm×60cm, damping ratio, , %5
Note: Neglect the axial deformation of the beams and the columns and assume that the beams have infinite
bending rigidity.

Consider the structure as a SDOF system, plot the free vibration displacement time history response for:
i) Undamped harmonic motions with initial displacement 0.05 m.
ii) Damped harmonic motions with initial displacement 0.05 cm.
iii) Damped harmonic motions with initial velocity 1 m/s, compute the maximum displacement.

Q2. The municipality hires you to determine the dynamic properties of a frame system experimentally. You
decide to do a free vibration test of the frame system by using a controlled hydraulic jack to create initial
displacement. With a jacking force of F KN, the frame has displaced to D1 cm. After jacking the frame, you
release the frame from the jack and you record its free vibration motion. On the first return swing after
release, the frame back to D2 towards it. You recorded the time between the time of release, and the first
return to be T seconds. Determine the following:
a) Stiffness of the system (k)
b) Natural frequency
c) Mass of the system (m)
d) Damping ratio (%)
e) Displacement Amplitude of the frame after 5 cycles
f) Plot the time history response of the system displacement, u(t)

Q3. Consider a heavy mass M1 is dropped and from h1 height to a cantilever concrete beam with unit mass
2.4 ton/m3. Assume the mass of the beam is lumped at the free end and a damping ratio of the beam to be
= 5%. After the impact, the mass is assumed to fully attach to the beam.
i. Find stiffness and mass of the cantilever
ii. Find natural circular frequency, frequency, period of the cantilever
iii. Find velocity of Mass M before the impact using Conservation of Energy Principle
iv. Find initial velocity of cantilever after the impact using Conservation of Momentum Principle
v. Plot the vertical displacement time history, u, of the cantilever tip resulted from the impact.
vi. Compute the maximum shear force (Elastic Force)
vii. Compute bending moment at fixed end of the cantilever
Note: Ignore the initial displacement resulted from self-weight of the beam
