3. COMPREHENSION (20MRKS)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
Let us do away with gender-defined roles
When God made women out of man according to the Biblical story of creation), He did not restrict
her from doing certain types of jobs, nor did He forbid man from doing any kind of chores. The only
problem with us today is that we think like those who lived in an age where men’s roles and women’s
roles were clearly specified.
Consequently, it is rare to find a man at home doing chores like washing the dishes, preparing supper
for the family or even cleaning the house while the women of the house sits to watch the news or a
programme she enjoys on television. This mindset has also been passed down to children, where you
will find a girl working tirelessly around the house while her brother is comfortably stretched out on
the sofa watching a movie. Why can’t we train our children to do what needs to be done irrespective
of their gender?
Personally, I was brought up in a home where chores are divided equally among those present, and
no amount of protesting could exonerate me from my assigned chores, which is why I find this
gender sensitivity somewhat discriminative. I once broached the issue of sharing chores with a friend
of mine and his reaction was unpredictable, “You expect me to cook, wash the dishes, clean the
house and look after the baby? These are things I can’t do no matter how much I love her! My job
is to put food on the table and secure our children’s future,” he responded passionately. These are
biases so deeply ingrained that it seems odd if a man tells you that he is a nurse. The question that
naturally comes to mind will be, “Isn’t that a woman’s job?” because you expect a nurse to be a
woman in a pretty white or small stripped dress and a white cap. However, the truth is that men are
just as capable of providing nursing care as their female counterparts.
And turning to politics, how many of our constituencies have female representatives in parliament?
Just a handful. And how many countries in the world have women presidents or prime ministers?

FOR MARKING SCHEMES CALL/TEXT/WHATSAPP 0746-222-000

[email protected]
Another handful. Many women have joined politics hoping to succeed where men have failed but
quit after being frustrated by men’s obvious lack of trust in their abilities. But from those who have
persevered, we can see that women do better than men since they start this from the basic level of
the home, where they take care of their families and do everything to keep them going.
Another very peculiar field is football. Fans flock pubs to watch male players juggle the ball and
make their fancy moves and sometimes fights erupt after heated arguments about football games
like the World Cup, premier League and other tournaments. But I have never heard people fight over
the Women’s World Cup or anybody disappointed after a women’s team he supports took a thrashing
from an opponent.
Careers like engineering have also been affected by this negative trend. It is getting increasingly rare
to find a woman in overalls lying under a heavy truck checking for engine trouble or repairing the
brakes. This is considered a man’s job and many people believe a woman cannot do it properly.
I believe is it time we got rid of these outdated beliefs and started appreciating women for who they
are. We should give them a chance to prove themselves and open up more opportunities for them.
Men should also realize that to do perfectly, one requires brain, not brawn, and if this continues, it
will do more harm than good. Besides, what a man can do, a woman can do, sometimes even better.
Giving women an opportunity, will create a balance and bring out the best in everyone.

THE MANY HEALING PROPERTIES OF ALOE VERA.
There are over 240 different species of Aloe Vera growing mainly in the dry regions of Africa,
Asia, Europe and America.

Although Aloe Vera is a member of the lily family, it has many characteristics in common with the
cactus .This unique plant also belongs to a larger plant family called Xeroids.

Known to herbalists and medical folklorists for centuries as the medical plant or the potted
physician. This cactus like plant with green, dagger-shaped leaves filled with a clear, viscous gel,
was taken to North America from Africa in the sixteenth century.

But long before this, Aloe Vera, whose name means shining bitter substance ,was widely regarded
as the master healing plant. The ancient Egyptians referred to Aloe Vera as the plant of
immortality and included it among the funeral gifts buried with the pharaohs in the pyramids.

In recent years, medical research has confirmed and extended many of the health claims for the
shining bitter substance used externally or consumed as a liquid that forms the heart of Aloe Vera.

One of the major properties that makes Aloe Vera a must for the cosmetics industries is its capacity
to help the human skin accelerate the production of fibroblasts. Fibroblasts aids in the manufacture
of collagen, which is the protein that controls the aging process of the skin and wrinkling. As one
ages, collagen starts to disappear from the skin causing a slackening which results in wrinkling.
Aloe Vera gel helps to protect the outer layers of the skin by helping it to re-organize skin cells,
causing the skin to regain its firmness. The skin needs moisture to avoid wrinkling. Research has
also shown that the skin absorbs moisture from Aloe Vera gel three to four times faster than
water.

[email protected]

Another benefit of Aloe Vera is that it heals wounds faster. The bulk of the Aloe Vera leaf is filled
with a gel, of which 96 percent is water. The other four per cent contains healing substance.
Applied to wounds Aloe Vera gel is a mild anaesthetic, relieving itching ,swelling and pain. It is
also antibacterial and anti-fungal used in conditions like athletes foot.
Aloe Vera is also used after surgical operations as it decreases surgical recovery time. For example
eighteen acne patients underwent facial surgery in which lesion scars were removed.
After the operation, dressings were applied to their faces, with half of each person’s face receiving
the standard coated with surgical gel, and other half with Aloe Vera added to the dressing .The half
of the face treated with Aloe Vera healed approximately 72hrs faster than the other side.

Another advantage of using Aloe Vera is that when taken orally it eases intestinal problems. Aloe
Vera juice has been found effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Aloe Vera has also been found to reduce blood sugar in diabetes. When taken, Aloe Vera reduces
the blood sugar levels in diabetics as reported in Hormone Research .Five patients with adults, non
insulin-dependant diabetes were given half –teaspoon of Aloe Vera extract daily for up to 14
weeks. Blood sugar levels were reduced in all patients by an average of 45 per cent.

Research has also shown that Aloe Vera reduces arthritic swelling. It can help prevent arthritis and
reduce the inflammation in joints already affected by arthritis, according to the journal of the
American Pediatrics Medical Association.

An extract of mannose, one of the sugars in Aloe Vera has been found to inhibit HIV-1 progression.
In 1991 study in molecular Biotherapy, HIV-1 cells were treated in vitro, outside the body with a
mannose extract Aloe Vera slowed virus reproduction by as much as 30 percent. This suppressed
the spread of the virus from infected cells.

2. COMPREHENSION (20 MKS)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
TATII’S PROBLEMS
She has lived a state of uncertainty since 1982. Her life has been dreary and full of disappointments.
Her parents have been strict and demanding. She has had not time to visit her friends and cousins
living upcountry. Every time, she has asked her parents to let her go and pay a visit to her friends,
they have said, “You cannot go to visit your friends until you have finished your studies. Life had
become very difficult in this country because of too many jobless young people. The situation has
been made worse by the great number of examinations failures. No daughter of ours is going to be
like these unemployed people. So you see, Tatii, you cannot go upcountry until your ‘O’ levels are
over.

It has been like that for the past four years. Her life has been that of a zombie. She has listened to her
mother’s sighs and her father’s preaching. The ‘O’ level results are out and her parents won’t
believe that she has not passed.
What is she going to tell them? She had hoped to please her parents by securing entrance to the
university, but all is now lost. Yes nearly lost. All would have been lost if Mrs. Ngueso, the school
career teacher, hadn’t been called in to calm down Tatii and advise her parents.

Poor Mrs. Ngueso! She has had quite a task to save Tatii from her harsh parents. Tatii’s father has
been the most difficult one to convince that Tatii is not the only girl who has failed her ‘O’ level
examinations. As soon as he had seen Mrs Ngueso, he had started complaining that teachers no
longer caned the children to make them work hard enough to pass their examinations. at some
point in his discussion with Mrs. Ngueso, Tatii’s father had nearly lost his temper. But Mrs.
FOR MARKING SCHEMES CALL/TEXT/WHATSAPP 0746-222-000

Ngueso had been his match! She had braved his sour looks and insisted that it was Tatii they had
met to discuss and not just any other school child.

She said, Tatii has worked well, but I has constantly appeared as if she has lacked the social support
she needed to succeed. Tatii is a very girl but she has been very unhappy. Particularly lately. Sir,
the girl needed moral support from you, her parents, as well as from school. The school can give
some moral support and the academic support a child needs. But most of all the parents have
always been expected to encourage their children in the most crucial movements of their life. May
be you and to some extent the school, owe Tatii some assistance.

Now Tatii’s mother spoke for the first time. “Baba Tatii, let us do as Mrs. Ngueso says. The child
has been very unhappy. I haven’t told you this bhut since the appearance of the examination results
I have lived in fear. Tatii has behaved very strangely at times. Her friends have reported that she
was planning to run away from home. Please let us give her a second chance”

Tatii’s father turned and looked at his wife for the first time sine Mrs. Ngueso arrival. He saw in her
pleading eyes the pain of a loving mother. He quickly looked away. At that moment he realized
how very blind he had been to his wife and daughters suffering. He rose to leave, turned and
extended his hand to Mrs. Ngueso and said, ;Thank you very much, mwalimu Tatii will be in
school at the beginning of term. Then he left the room.

If We Must Die – Claude Mckay
If we must die – let it not be like hogs
Haunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accused lot,
If we must die – oh let us only die
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honour us through dead!
Oh Kinsmen! We must meet the common foe;
Though far outnumbered, let us show us brave
And for their thousand blows deal one death blow
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

4 .Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
Terrorism is a real and urgent threat to nations and their interests a threat that could become perilous
if terrorists acquire nuclear or biological weapons. The policies pursued by the bush administration
have too often been counterproductive and self-defeating. In the name of an ‘offensive’ strategy,
they have undermined the values and principles that made the United States a model for the world,
dismayed cooperative nations around the world and jeopardize their cooperation with us, and
provided ammunition for terrorist recruitment in the Middle East and beyond. To achieve our long-
term objective we must go beyond narrow counterterrorism policies to embed counterterrorism in
an overarching national security strategy designed to restore American leadership and respect in the
world. This leadership must be based on a strong commitment to our values and to building the
structures of international cooperation that are needed to only fight terrorists, but also to meet key
challenges of our time: proliferation; climate change and energy security; the danger of pandemic
disease; and the need to sustain a vibrant global economy that lifts the lives of people everywhere.
We have to demonstrate that the model of liberty and tolerance embodied by the United States, are
the enemy of these universal ambitions. We must pursue an integrated set of policies- on non-
proliferation, energy and climate, global public health and economic development- which reflect
recognition that in an independent world, the American people can be safe and prosperous only if
others too share in these blessings. Our policies must demonstrate a respect for differences of history,
culture and tradition, while remaining true to the principles of liberty embodied in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. This kind of enlightened self-interest led others to rally to American
leadership in the Cold War and offers the best hope for sustaining our leadership in the future. The
world is filled with terrorist organizations. While the State Departments list of designated groups

FOR MARKING SCHEMES CALL/TEXT/WHATSAPP 0746-222-000

[email protected]
includes almost four dozen, numerous well known ones are still omitted because of issues related to
designation process. Yet to many organizations, only one subset currently poses a serious and
sustained threat to the United States and its allies: the Sunni jihadist organization known by the
shorthand ‘al Qaeda’
The group merits this special status because it is the only terrorist organization with the ambition and
the capability to inflict genuinely catastrophic damage, which can provisionally be defined as attacks
that claim causalities in the four digits or higher. The group is also unique in that it may eventually
be able to carry out a campaign of repeated attacks that would have a paralyzing effect on American
life and its institutions. Its ability to foil fundamental U.S. strategic goals-as it did in Iraq and as it
threatens to do together with the Taliban in Afghanistan-has been amply demonstrated. As the
turmoil in Pakistan has demonstrated, its capacity for upsetting the geopolitics of major regions of
the world today is also unrivalled among non-state actors. The evidence provided by September 11,
2001 is sufficient to demonstrate the groups’ capability and its determination. Unlike most terrorist,
it eschews incremental gains and seeks no part of a negotiation process; it seeks to achieve its
primary ends, including mobilization of a large number of Muslims, through violence.
The Bush administration has fundamentally misunderstood the nature of the jihadist movement and
its actions have made the threat considerably worse. The administration has hyped the threat and
subordinated foreign security policy into the ‘Global War on Terror.’ It has relied on the wrong tools
–principally the military- and vastly overemphasized tactics at the expense of strategy. To the extent
that it has a strategy for reducing the appeal of jihad, it is the ‘freedom agenda’ which has backfired.
Counter terrorism requires a shift away from a foreign and security policy that makes
counterterrorism the prism through which everything is evaluated and decided. It requires a policy
that must go beyond uncompromising efforts to do away with those who seek to harm us today.
International engagement is essential in meeting this threat since it will ensure that new terrorist
recruits do not come to take the place of those that have been defeated.
(Adapted from ‘strategic Counterterrorism’ by Daniel Benjamin, Policy Paper Number 7, 2008)

SECTION B: COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

THE VILLAGE DEGREE

She was coming from the river when she noticed her primary school headteacher’s bicycle leaning
against the tree in front of her parent’s house. Instinctively, she decided to stealthily go round the
house and hide in the kitchen. She didn’t want her teacher to see her in her torn and patched work
dress. But the mention of Alliance Girls High School made her forget about her attire. She rushed
into the house, water jerry can still on her back.

She became the heroine of the family, the village, the location and even the district. Her name
appeared in the newspapers. She was the best in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in the
county and her name was on the lips of everybody. The whole family crowded around the teacher
to read for them this great letter.

Even those who could not read wanted just to touch it. The letter spoke of hope and freedom from
poverty and as many of the women seemed to think, free from dependence on men in their
celebration. Many older women repeated in different versions their belief that with education you
my daughter won’t have to be a slave for a man. You will be your own master. Though
Mwongeli did not understand much about what the older women meant, she was excited as they
were over her apparently open path to freedom.

So Mwongeli had joined Alliance thrilled by the prospects of freedom. There she met the best
brains in the country and they were all celebrating freedom from slavery. But to her surprise, the
presence of visiting boys’ school seemed to generate such excitement that she wondered from
men.

As for Mwongeli, her mother had told her not to mix men and education. In obedience, she kept the
two apart and sure enough, after four more years, yet another letter came to her and there was
cause for women folk in her village to celebrate `again. The daughter had been admitted to study
for a degree in Electrical engineering at the university of Nairobi, the only woman in the class of
twenty. Yes, she was no longer Mwongeli ….. she was already a village engineer. In fact, the
name Mwongeli even it its form ‘Ngeli” was lost. Now the focus was a degree. She was now
Engineer Mwongeli’

Aren’t you going to open the letter? Atieno asked, startling Mwongeli out of her reverie. ‘It’s not
urgent’ Mwongeli replied in a flat tone. ‘I was just thinking how I can do this quietly ….. you
remember how the whole village hired a van to come and celebrate my masters scholarship offer?
I’m usually glad to see them happy and excited but I find I have no privacy. I’d like to handle this
one differently. I’ll need to read the letter when I have had a rest and I’ll tell you what I decide.

And with that Mwongeli put her letter in the handbag and sat down to enjoy a cup of tea and chart
with her friend.

SECTION B: COMPREHENSION (20mks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
Decades ago, two geologists visited Migori County and left villagers with high hopes of
striking it reach.
A valuable mineral had been discovered.
Now, 20 years later, nothing much has been done to tap the gold in Macalder. Instead, hundreds of
people have died in the process of digging the mines, while pregnant women working in the area
have been giving birth to children with deformities.
Residents attribute their misfortunes to lack of modern equipment to professionally exploit the
mineral. They have been mining gold using mercury mixed with water and powdered stones which
they stir to the consistency of porridge before washing off the mercury into their farms.
One man is keen to prevent deaths among the residents depending on gold mining as a source of
income.
He has invented a gold mining machine- the ball mill machine.
Mr. Olello, 41says he got idea for the machine from a friend who went to Zimbabwe on business
and returned with a photograph of a gold mining machine.
“It took me two years to design my first machine and in 1999, I eventually came up with the ball
mill” . Mr.Okello says his villagers neither knew nor cared whether mercury was harmful to their
health.
Mr. Okello explains that his machine is a multipurpose appliance. It can mill numerous kinds of
rocks for building materials industry.
For gold mining, the machine uses small steel ball grinders which separate gold ore from dust, after
which it is further refined.
Among the places that have been mapped for gold deposits within the region are Rongo, Kehancha
in Kuria District; Masara and Kehara in Nyatike constituency, Lolgorian area in Trans Mara and
some parts of Siaya county.
Gold qualities make it one of the most coveted metals in the world. Not only can it be beautifully
shaped and sculpted, the yellow metal conducts electricity and does not tarnish.
Gold has been used in dentistry for nearly 3,000 years. It is used for filling, crowns, bridges and
orthodontic appliances. Gold can be placed in contact with person’s body and not cause harm.

SECTION B: COMPREHENSION (20MKS)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follows:
The breeze on the third mainland bridge would have made anybody sleepy at that time of the
morning. It was 2 a.m, the traffic on the bridge had practically ceased. The morning night was
approaching the hour when only the police and thieves would be on road unless, of course, there
was anybody foolhardly enough to share the hours with them.
This was Lagos and the armed robbers were laying siege to the city. For the three policemen on
check-point duty, it was a time to find somewhere to sit down, hidden well away from the lights.
They would check a few more cars and that would be all. After standing all day they were tired.
The sergeant in charge of the check point was the first to put his bolt- action rifle down. He sat
down and lit himself a cigarette. The cigarette glowed in the darkness.
“Check a few more cars then come and rest,” said the sergeant. “After all it’s not our father’s
work. Besides, how much are they paying us?”
The others smiled at him, their smiles hardly visible in the dark. No, it wasn’t their father’s work
and the pay was paltry. The sergeant was right. It stood to reason. If it wasn’t for the money they
collected on check-point duty, things would be very bad indeed.
“How much have we made today?” asked the sergeant. Constable Dilibu put his hand in to his
pocket and brought out the notes he had stuffed in there. The sergeant’s torch illuminated the area
while he counted them. Constable Dilibu was barely two months out of the police college, Ikeja.
He was just nineteen, but he was learning fast. Although he made at least five naira extra per night,
he didn’t really like check-point duty. He was too scared of the armed robbers. Those boys played
much too rough- if you could call it a game.
“Twenty – nine naira, “fifty kobo,” constable Dilibu answered at last.
“Good,’ said the sergeant. He calculated that the two naira, fifty kobo extra would be his own. He
liked it when he made more than the boys. It showed who was the boss.
At first the lights in the distance were like two small illuminated dots floating in the air. The car
was travelling very fast. May be another party-goer, they thought. The two constables braced
themselves. This could be their chance to make more money for the night.
The sergeant took another puff at his cigarette. He was well satisfied with the night’s take. The
boys could take care of the oncoming car by themselves.
Dilibu flashed his torch, moving it up and down in the manner “slow down and stop.”
The car decelerated and came to a stop right in front of the policemen. The driver was no ordinary
motorist. He knew how to handle the car. Dilibu shone the torch inside.
“Coming from a party?” He enquired. The five men in the car did not answer. “Come and open
your boot,” Dilibu ordered. The driver took the key out of the ignition.
“Take the key and check it yourself,” he said. The constable took the key and walked round to the
boot. He opened it, peered in, closed it again and walked back to the driver. The boot was empty.
These men were definitely up to something, Dilibu thought. He could feel it, somehow. They made
him nervous.
The sergeant strolled over. He knew, too. They were men of the underworld all right. The quiet
types were always the most dangerous.

The man sitting in the owner’s corner spoke. “Listen, my brother. What’s your concern? What’s
your problem? Why get yourself killed for this country? What will you gain – level five?”
The reference to the sergeant’s salary touched a sore point. The driver held out his hand for the
key. The man in the owner’s corner spoke again. “Take this,” he said, holding out his hand to the
sergeant.
The sergeant instinctively put out his hand and took what the man was proffering. The feel of the
wad of money told him there must be at least fifty naira there.
“All the big men are enjoying themselves while we are here suffering,” the man added. There was
no real sympathy in his voice.
“That’s true, my brother,” the sergeant agreed. He did not need convincing. They were
outnumbered. He was sure the men were better armed too, even if the guns were not visible.

C. COMPREHENSION
1. Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow:
BAKING soda or bicarbonate or edible soda (ENO), as it is also called, is sodium bicarbonate in
chemistry books. It is different from washing soda or soda ash, which is sodium carbonate. Soda
bicarbonate was called ‘saleratus’ in earlier days.
In the human body, it is the main mildly alkaline substance. The human body makes it out of carbon
dioxide breathed in sodium obtained from the salt in the diet. it helps to maintain the delicate
balance between acidity and alkalinity that is necessary for the normal chemical activity in the
body. It helps transport carbon dioxide to the lungs, neutralizes stomach acids as a component of
saliva, helps cut down on tooth decay. The blood of a healthy human being is slightly alkaline.
When the amount of sodium bicarbonate in the blood is insufficient, we suffer from acidosis. The
digestive juices from the liver and pancreas are alkaline. The gastric juice in the stomach is
decidedly acidic and it contains hydrochloric acid.
To most people, baking or edible soda in tablet form or a powder is a comforting medicine to sooth
acidity. A teaspoon dissolved in a glass of water is a popular and effective remedy for indigestion.
A cupful dissolved in bathwater along with two cupfuls of starch helps relieve the itching of
allergic reactions.
When mixed with water to form paste, it helps alleviate the pain of minor burns and a paste of soda
bicarbonate and water or cold cream, relieves the discomfort of insects bites. For fungus on your
feet, especially between your toes, apply a soda bicarbonate paste. For foot odour soak your feet
in a solution of soda bicarbonate in water. Take soda bicarbonate and mix it with a little bit of
water, and apply it with your fingers along the gum-line in your teeth. Brush your teeth after this.
It will help you stop all sorts of gum diseases. Mixed with a little common salt, soda bicarbonate
makes an excellent tooth powder. Most toothpaste contains a little soda bicarbonate.

As a formidable plaque deterrent soda bicarbonate was recognized as an efficient dental cleaner in
1931 only. Soda bicarbonate is now a major component of best selling toothpastes. There is
exclusive soda bicarbonate toothpaste. From the home medical cabinet, soda bicarbonate has now
moved to the industry. Today, it is used to curb acid emissions from chimneys and to help prevent
acid rain, to keep toxic materials like lead and copper out of drinking water, to help in
biodegradation of sewage and to remove contamination from soil. It may turn out to be world’s
‘greenest’ natural chemical. It has more than 300j applications in industry and more and more
uses are still being discovered. Soda bicarbonate is also added to cattle feed. Cattle raised for
meat industry are fed a high energy, low-fibre diet to maximize weight gain, are given
supplementary soda bicarbonate to speed up their digestion process. Dairy cows which are given a
similar diet, also have soda (bicarbonate mixed with their feed).it (increases their milk production).
Use of soda bicarbonate in baking was an instant success as a time-saver.
Yeast breads needing a rising time of two to three hours where quickly joined by quick-rising baking
soda batters, breads and biscuits.
When soda bicarbonate is combined with an acid like vinegar (acetic acid), butter-milk containing
lactic acid, carbon dioxide is released to create an instant cleaning agent.
Scour tarnished brass and copper pots with a paste of soda bicarbonate and lemon juice. They will
shine once again. Flush one cup of soda bicarbonate down the
toilet every week. It helps clean clogged septic tanks. For food stuck or burnt into pots and pans,
cover the burned food generously with soda bicarbonate. Add enough hot water and let it soak for
a few minutes. Wash thoroughly.
