Average generally represents the central or typical value in a group of data. Average refers to the
sum of a group of values divided by n, where n is the number of values in the group.

To calculate the average, you need to sum up all the observations in a list and then divide that by the
total number of observations.

The formula for calculating averages is

*In statistics, average is also known as a mean.

Example: What is the average of 10, 15, 24 and 32?

Solution: Sum of the numbers = 10 + 15 + 24 + 32 = 81. No. of the numbers = 4.
Average = 81/4 = 20.25

Exercises:

1) If the runs scored by Mushfiqur Rahim in last 5 matches are 72, 64, 22, 34, and 98. Find the
average run scored by him.

While solving problems related to age, we should remember the following points:
● Difference between the ages remains constant. [If M’s age, m=10, N’s age ,n=1, (n-m=5)
; after 10 years M’s age will be 20 and N’s age will be 25, but their difference will still be the
same (25-20=5)
● The ratio of the ages doesn’t remain the same with time. [If M’s age is 10 and N’s age is
20; N is twice as old as M (n=2m); but after 10 years, M becomes 20 and N becomes 30, in
this case N is not twice as old as M.]

Exercises:

a. 2 b. 4 c. 5 d. 8 e. 10

then what is the sum of their ages (in years) now?
a. 30 b. 35 c. 40 d. 45 e. 50

9. Ten years ago, Sarin was 1/3rd as old as Karin. If Sarin is 18 years old now, how old is Karin now?
(A) 20 (b) 24 (c) 36 (d) 54 (e) 72

10. A mother is thrice as old as her son. If 10 years ago, the age of the mother was 5 times the age of the
son, what is the present age of the mother?
(a)20 (b)32 (c)60 (d)56 (e) 36

Ratio is a way to show the comparison between two quantities using division, i.e. (x:y = x/y)
A ratio shows how many times a number, is another number.
The ratio rule
Let find the ratio between 16 and 24.
16:24 = 16/24 = 2/3
16 2×8
Here, 24 = 3×8 = 2: 3 ; i.e.,
That is we cut off 8 from both sides to bring it in its least form. So, if we have the ratio given, and
we need to find out the actual values, we will multiply the actual values with an unknown variable
‘x’. (2x and 3x in this case)
