Probability(Worksheet) 2022-23

Class XII

1. The probability that A hits a target is 3
and the probability that B hits it is 5 .
If each one of A and B shoots the target, what is the probability that (i) the
target is hit? (ii) exactly one of them hits the target?
2. A husband and a wife appear in an interview for two vacancies for the same
1 1
post. The probability of husband’s selection is 7 ℎ 5 .
What is the probability that (i) both will be selected? ? (ii) only one of them
will be selected? (iii) none will be selected?

3. The probabilities of A, B, C solving a problem are 3
,
7

8
respectively.
If all the three try to solve the problem simultaneously, find the probability
that exactly one of them can solve the problem.
4. A family has two children. Find the probability that both are boys, if it is
known that (i) at least one of the children is a boy. (ii) the elder child is a
boy.
5. A man is known to speak the truth 3 out of 5 times. He throws a die and
reports that it is a number greater than 4. Find the probability that it is
actually a number greater than 4.
6. There are two bags, BagI and Bag II. Bag I contains 4 white and 3 red balls
while Bag II contains 3 white and 7 red balls. One ball is drawn at random
from one of the bags and it is found to be white. Find the probability that it
was drawn from Bag I.
7. A fair die is rolled. If 1 turns up a ball is picked up at random from bag A, if
2 or 3 comes up, a ball is picked up at random from bag B, otherwise a ball
is picked up from bag C. Bag A contains 3 red and 2 white balls, bag B
contains 3 red and 4 white balls and bag C contains 4 red and 5 white balls.
The die rolled, a bag is picked up and a ball is drawn from it. Ifnthe ball
drawn is red , what is the probability that bag B was picked up?
8. From a pack of 52 cards, a card is lost. From the remaining 51 cards, two
cards are drawn at random(without replacement) and are found to be both
diamonds. What is the probability that the lost card was a heart.
9. Two bags A and B contains 4 white and 3 black balls and 2 white and 2
black balls respectively. From bag A two balls are drawn at random and
then transferred to bag B. A ball is then drawn from bag B and is found to
be a black ball. What is the probability that the transferred balls were 1
white and 1 black?
10. A bag contains 4 balls. Two balls are drawn at random, and are found to be
white. What is the probability that all the balls are white?
11. An urn contains m white and n black balls. A ball is drawn at random and
is put back into the urn along with k additional balls of the same colour as
that of the ball drawn. A ball is again drawn at random. Show that the
probability of drawing a white ball does not depend on k .
12. Two cards are drawn simultaneously(or successively without replacement)
from a well shuffled pack of 52 playing cards. Find the probability
distribution of the number of red cards.
13.Two cards are drawn simultaneously from a well shuffled pack of 52 cards.
Find the probability distribution of the number of aces.
14.From a lot of 10 bulbs which includes 3 defectives, a sample of 2 bulbs are
drawn at random. Find the probability distribution of the number of
defective bulbs.
15.From a lot of 30 bulbs which includes 6 defectives, a sample of 2 bulbs are
drawn at random with replacement. Find the probability distribution of the
number of defective bulbs.
16.Three balls are drawn one by one without replacement from a bag
containing 5 white and 4 green balls. Find the probability distribution of
number of green balls drawn.
17.Three cards are drawn successively with replacement from a well shuffled
deck of 52 playing cards. If getting a card of spade is considered to be a
success, find the probability distribution of the number of successes.
