Quantum Physics

1) An electron beam is accelerated through a PD of 200 V. Calculate the

associated wavelength. Ans: 0.86 Å
2) Find the energy of neutron in eV whose de Broglie WL is 1 Å. Ans: 8.13 * 10-12 Å
3) Find the de Broglie WL of a 1 Kg object moving with a speed of 1 m/s and for
an electron accelerated through a potential difference of 182 V. Reason why
wave nature of matter is not apparent in daily observation.
4) Find the lowest energy of an electron confined to move in a 1D box of length 1
Å. (Ans: 37.74 eV)
5) An electron has a speed of 1.05 * 104 m/s with an accuracy of 0.02%.
Calculate the uncertainty in the position of the electron. (5.58 mm)
6) Compare the uncertainties in the velocities of an electron and a proton
confined to a box of equal dimensions. (Ans:1835)
7) Calculate the energy difference between the ground state and the first excited
state of an electron in a 1D box of length 10-4 cm. Ans: 113.04 eV
8) Can you observe the energy states of a ball of mass 100 g moving in a box of
WL 1 m? ( Hint: calculate E1, E2, E3 and show that energy difference b/w
different energy levels is very very small for observation)

Sensors:

1) Calculate the capacitance to produce ultrasonic waves of frequency 2 * 106

Hz with an inductance of 1 H. Ans: 6.34 nF
2) A piezoelectric X cut quartz plate has thickness of 1.6 mm. If the velocity of
propagation of sound waves along the x axis is 5760 m/s, calculate the
fundamental frequency of the crystal. [Hint:( 𝜈 =λ ) and use 2t for λ also
understand that for such piezo crystals v= 𝐸/𝜌] Ans: 1.8 MHz
3) A quartz crystal of thickness 0.003 is vibrating at resonance. Calculate the
fundamental frequency ( given: elasticity/youngs modulus constant is 7.9 *
1010 N/m2 and density is 2650 kg/m3) Ans:9.096 * 105 Hz
4) An object is 10 km below the sea level. After how long can the echo be
expected using a UDM sensor. ( given: velocity of sound here is 1520 m/s)
(Ans: 13.33 s)
