Sample Size and Sampling Technique

For the questionnaire, the simple random sampling method will be used to select a

sample of residents and stakeholders, based on their probability of being affected by

the operations of governance and development activities in the Niger-North and

Niger-East Senatorial Districts of Niger State.

The total population across the Local Government Areas (LGAs) was derived using

the National Population Commission's projections. The formula by Yamane (1967)

was applied to determine the sample size for the study, as follows:

Using Yamane formula;

N
n=
1+ N ¿ ¿

Where n is the sample size,

N is the population size, and e is the level of precision (margin of error).

For this study, the level of precision is set at 0.05 (5%), which is a common standard for social

science and management research.

With the total population size for Niger-North Senatorial District (1,208,636) and

Niger-East Senatorial District (1,252,400), the sample size is calculated as

follows:

2,461,036
n=
1+2,461,036 ¿ ¿

2,461,036
=398.84
6 , 15 3.59

Therefore, n = 399.

Approximately the total sample size for this study = 400

There are 10 wards in Ardo Kola Local Government Area. These are Alim Gora, Ardo Kola,

Iware, Jauro Yinu, Lamido Borno, Mayo Ranewo, Sarkin Dutse, Sunkani, Tau, and Zongon

Kombi. The sample size of the respondents in the various political wards was determined with

the Bowley population determination and allocation formula expressed as:

¿= ¿ n
N( )
Where:

ni = Sample size for a given ward

Ni = Population of the given ward

N = Total population of all wards

n = Total sample size (400 in this case)

The total sample size of 400 respondents was proportionately distributed across the LGAs based
on their population sizes to ensure equitable representation.
