DBW and TER

Planning the Diet

A. Estimating the Desirable Body Weight
1. Infants: (if the birth weight is unknown, use 3000 grams)
a) 1st 6 months
▪ DBW (g) = birth weight (g) + (age in months x 600)
b) 7- 12 months
▪ DBW (g) = birth weight (g) + (age in months x 500)
Let's try!
1. Compute for the DBW of a baby born last January 28, 2024
o Compute the age = 3 months
o DBW (g) = birth weight (g) + (age in months x 600)
o DBW (g) = 3000 g + (3 months x 600)
o DBW (g) = 3000 g + 1800
o DBW (g) = 4800 g or 4.8 kg DBW
2. Compute for the DBW of 10 month old baby
o DBW (g) = birth weight (g) + (age in months x 500)
o DBW (g) = 3000 g + (10 x 500)
o DBW (g) = 3000 g+ 5000
o DBW (g) = 8000 g or 8 kg DBW
A. Estimating Desirable Body Weight
1. Infants
oSecond Method: DBW (kg) = (age in month / 2) + 3
o Example: for a 10 month old baby
• DBW (kg) = (age in month / 2) + 3
• DBW (kg) = (10/ 2) + 3
• DBW (kg) = 5 + 3
• DBW = 8 kg DBW
A. Estimating Desirable Body Weight

Infants weight Infants height

▪ Doubled at 5 – 6 • At birth: 50 cm
months • At 1 year: + 24 cm
• At 2 years: + 12 cm
▪ Tripled at 12 months
• At 3 years: + 8 cm
▪ Quadrupled at 24 • At 4-8 years: + 6 cm every
months year
A. Estimating Desirable Body Weight
2. Children
• DBW (kg) = (Number of years x 2) + 8
oExample= 6 year old kid
▪DBW (kg) = (6 x 2) + 8 = 12 + 8 = 20 kg DBW
oExample= 7 year old kid
▪ DBW (kg) = (7 x 2) + 8 = 14 + 8 = 22 kg DBW
• Trend: + 2 kgs for every year
Let's Try
• What is the desirable body weight of my 14 -year-
old daughter?
• DBW (kg) = (Number of years x 2) + 8
• DBW (kg) = (14 x 2) + 8
• DBW (kg) =28 + 8 = 36 kg DBW
A. Estimating Desirable Body Weight:
ADULTS
• Body Mass Index-based Formula
oFor men 5 feet (1.52 m) tall, DBW = 112 lbs (51 kg)
oFor women 5 feet (1.52 m) tall, DBW = 106 lbs (48 kg)
oFor both sexes, add 4 lbs (1.8 kg) for every inch above 5
feet
BMI-Based formula example
• Compute the DBW of a women with height: 5 ft 7 inches
• Answer should be in Kg
o For women 5 feet (1.52 m) tall, DBW = 106 lbs (48 kg)
o For both sexes, add 4 lbs (1.8 kg) for every inch above 5 feet
o Given : 5 feet and 7 inches
o 5 ft = 48 kgs
o for 7 inches excess of 5 ft (7 x 1.8 kg) = 12.6 kg
o 48 kg + 12.6 kg = 60.6 kg
A. Estimating Desirable Body
Weight: ADULTS
Derived Formula Based on Body Mass Index

• DBW (kg) = Desirable BMI x H (m) 2

• Desirable BMI for men = 22
• Desirable BMI for women = 20.8 or 21
• Derived Formula Based on Body Mass Index

• Given: 5 ft 7 inches ; women; adult

o DBW (kg) = Desirable BMI x H (m) 2
• Desirable BMI for women = 20.8 or 21
• Convert 5 ft 7 in to m
• 1.7018 m
• DBW (kg) = 20.8 x (1.7018m2)
• DBW (kg) = 60.24 kg
Derived Formula Based on Body Mass Index
• To get the lower and upper ends of a normal BMI range (18.5 -
24.9), use the equations below:
• Lower end of weight range (kg) = 18.5 x H (m) 2
• Upper end of weight range (kg) = 24.9x H (m) 2
• Lower end (kg) = 18.5 x (1.7018m2)
o = 53.6 kg
• Upper end = 24.9 x (1.7018m 2)
• = 72.1 kg
Estimating Desirable Body Weight: ADULTS
• Tannhauser's Method (Broca's index)
oMeasure height in cm. Deduct from this the factor 100
and the answer is the DBW in kg. The DBW obtained
applies to Filipino stature by taking off 10 %.
• Equation: DBW = (height in cm –100) - [10%(height in cm –100)]
Tannhauser's Method (Broca's index)
• Calculate the DBW of a woman who stands 5'1" tall.
• STEP 1: Convert height to cm as follows:
o 5'1" = (5 feet x 12 inches) + 1 inch
o = 61 inches x (2.54 cm/in)
o = 154.94 cm
• STEP 2: Deduct 100 from the height factor:
o DBW (kg ) = 154.94 - 100
o = 54.94 kg
• STEP 3: Adjust body frame for Filipinos; deduct 10%:
o DBW (kg) = 54.94 - (10% of 54.94)
o = 54.94 - 5.494
o = 49.446 or 50 kg DBW
Estimating Desirable Body Weight: ADULTS
• Hamwi Formula
• Equation for MALES: DBW = 106 lbs for the first 5 feet,
then + or – 6 lbs for every inch above or below 5 feet
• Example: an adult male stands 5'3" tall
• DBW (lbs) = 106 lbs + (3 x 6 lbs)
• = 106 lbs + 18 lbs
• = 124 lbs
Estimating Desirable Body Weight: ADULTS
• Hamwi Formula
• Equation for FEMALES: DBW = 100 lbs for the first 5 feet,
then + or – 5 lbs for every inch above or below 5 feet
• Example: an adult female stands 4'10" tall
• DBW (lbs) = 100 lbs - (2 x 5 lbs)
• = 100 lbs - 10 lbs
• = 90 lbs
Estimating Desirable Body Weight: ADULTS
• Adopted Method
• For 5 ft use 105 lbs. For every inch above 5 feet, add
5 lbs.
• If 5 feet = 105 lbs, then 5 feet 1 inch = 105 + 5 lbs =
110 lbs
• Applies to both male and female
Estimating TER: INFANTS
• Infants: TER/day = DBW x factor
• Factor = 120 (up to 6 months) to 110 Cal/KDBW
o4-month old: TER = 5.4 kg (DBW) x 120 Cal/kg = 648
or 650 Cals
o8-month old: TER = 7 kg (DBW) x 110 Cal/kg = 770
or 750 Cals
oTER = rounded off to the nearest 50
Estimating TER: CHILDREN
• Narins and Weil
• TER/day = 1000 + (100 x age in years)
• Example:
• 7 year old child: TER/day = 1000 + (100 X 7)
• = 1000 + 700
• = 1700 Cals
Estimating TER: CHILDREN
• Factors Table Age Range Cals/KDBW 1989 RDA CBMRG
1-3 105 102 100
4-6 90 89.6 90
7-9 75 73.2 80

55 (girls) 54.6 (girls)
13 – 15 - - 60
Above 15 - - 50

• FORMULA: TER/day = DBW x Factor

• Example: 7 year old child, DBW = 22 kg; use CBMRG
• TER = 22 kg x 80 cal/kg = 1760 = 1750 Calories or kcal
Estimating TER: ADOLESCENTS
• Formula: TER/day = DBW X Factor

Estimating TER: ADULTS
Using BMR.RMR predictive equations

• Harris-Benedict Equation
• For male: BMR=66.47 + (13.75 x W) + (5.003 x H )– (6.755 x A)
• For female: BMR=655.1 + (9.563 x W) + (1.850 x H) – (4.676 x A)

• W = weight in Kg; A= age in years ; H = Height in cm
