At first glance if we look at bekantan will draw the conclusion that it is an apes / monkey
puppies. It is considered the same because between the bekantan and the monkey both have
feathers almost all of their body and also have a long tail. But after careful attention, they are
very much different. Bekantan is one type of monkey that has a life that is long and large, nose
bekantan has a reddish brown color. Not all proboscis have a large and long life, because that has
special features only possessed by males.
Male bekantan is very different from the female defender this is because the bekantan has a
larger body size than the female. The size of male body is able to reach 75 centimeters and
weight ranges 24 kilograms. While the female bekantan has a body size of about 60 centimeters
and weight of approximately 12 kilograms. The belly’s belly is said to be large because they
consume a lot of food each day. Although the proboscis has a feather that almost covers his
body, bekantan is an intelligent swimming animal. This they do to reach from one place to
another.
Bekantan will be encountered where most of the habitat is found in forests, mangrove
forests, swamps or forests near the coast around the island of Borneo. This type of animal prefers
to spend all day to inhabit the trees in groups. They live in groups of 10 to 32 bekantan. This
animal is very protected by the people of Kalimantan because hewa this is a typical animal of
Borneo.
Bekantan is included in the herbivore animals that like the food in the form of leaves such
as leaves from some other anatar tree species ketiau, lenggadai, piai, padada and so forth. They
not only eat the foliage but also eat the fruits or grains available in the garden. With the ability of
vision in the morning, they will be busy looking for food, when they feel hungry and tired then
they will choose a place a bit dark / dark as a place to take shelter. And in the afternoon they will
return to the riverside to enjoy food and choose to sleep.
It is said that bekantan is a type of monkey because they multiply by way of childbirth
(vivipar) with a gestation period of 166 days or 5-6 months. The pregnancy period will bear a
baby bekantan. Imagined not, why live bekantan it needs to be protected. Mother bekantan will
release the baby when they are 4-5 years old, as they can forage, hanging from tree to tree and
walking independently.
Bekantan is an animal protected by the Indonesian government, its habitat is diminished
because in one birth it produces only one baby, the number of forests being settled or the
company’s land, and the number of illegal hunting by the unaccountable party. For that, we are
obliged to keep the bekantan population not for personal gain but for the balance of the
ecosystem.
