Answer any Five out of Ten questions.
1. Give four properties of Lines of force in electrostatics.
2. Define Electric Flux.
3. What is zero potential?
4. Define electric current and current density.
5. State Laplace Law.
6. What is the principle of cyclotron?
7. What are Eddy currents?
8. Define Faraday’s first law of electrolysis.
9. What is the principle if AC generator?
10.What is Poynting vector?
PART – B (3x 8 = 24 Marks)
Answer any Three out of Eight questions.
11.State and prove Gauss theorem in electrostatics.
12.Obtain an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor.
13.Using Biot – Savart law, calculate the value of magnetic field due to an
infinitely long straight wire carrying a current ‘i’ amp at a distance ‘a’
from the wire.
14.Derive an expression for the force on a current carrying conductor placed
in a magnetic field.
15.Obtain the expression for coefficient of coupling between two coils.
16.State Maxwell’s equations in free space. Obtain the EM wave equation
and determine the velocity of light in vacuum.
17.Calculate the capacitance of a cylindrical capacitor if the radii of the inner
and outer cylinders are 2 x 10 -3 metre and 8 x 10 -3 metre, the outer
cylinder being earthed and the inner cylinder is given a positive charge.
The relative permittivity of the dielectric medium between the cylinders
is 5 meter and the length of the cylinders is 6 metre,
18.Calculate the self- inductance of a solenoid having 1000 turns and length
1 m. The area of cross- section is 7 cm2 and the relative permeability of
the core is 1000.
PART – C (1 x 16 = 16 Marks)
Answer any One out of Three questions
19. (a) Apply Gauss law to obtain the electric field along an infinite
cylindrical charge.
(b) Derive an expression for the electric potential due to a charged
circular ring.
20. (a) Explain Krichhoff’s first and second laws.
(b) Apply Kirchhoff’s laws to deduce the current through the
galvanometre in Wheatstones’ bridge for slight imbalance.
21. (a) Obtain an expression for the growth and decay of charge in
capacitive circuit.
(b) Discuss an AC circuit containing inductance, capacity and resisitance
in series.
