TASK 1: LINE, BAR, PIE CHARTS AND TABLE

METHOD

1. Introduction: paraphrase the question.

2. Overview/overall trend: write 2 sentences about general changes:
increase/decrease/fluctuation or highest/lowest.
3. 2 detail paragraphs. Select key points/features and describe and/or compare them. Always
make comparisons where possible because it helps higher your score. Also don’t forget to
attach numbers (ideally 6 or 7); only include all figures if there are a few.

It does not matter if you write the overview as the conclusion because it will not affect your score.

Language for paraphrasing (from ielts-simon.com)

● graph = line graph

● trends in = changes in
● US consumption = consumption in the United States
● chart = flow chart (also: bar chart, pie chart, table)
● the process of paper recycling = how paper is recycled

● shows = illustrates/compares
● to produce forecasts = to forecast
● shows = compares

● 1. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
● The line graph below shows changes in the amount and type of fast food consumed by
Australian teenagers from 1975 to 2000.
● Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.

● The given line graph depicts the Australian teenagers’ habit of fast food consumption between
1975 and 2000 years.
● It can be seen from the graph that the popularity of hamburgers rose dramatically among the
Australian teenagers whereas the fish and chips gradually decreased.
● OVERALL, THE CONSUMPTIONS OF PIZZA AND HAMBURGERS INCREASE
DRAMATICALLY EXCEPT THAT OF FISH AND CHIPS. IT IS ALSO CLEAR THAT WHILE
THE AMOUNT OF HAMBURGERS CONSUMED IS THE HIGHEST, THAT OF FISH AND
CHIPS IS THE LOWEST.

According to the graph, in 1975, the fish and chips were very famous among the teenagers of
Australia. Moreover, at that time, it was eaten almost 100 times per year. After that in 1980, the
popularity of fish and chips decreased consistently; again it increased slightly in 1985. Then
from 1985 to 2000 the demand of this fast food fell significantly: just under the 40 times eaten
per year.

On the other hand, it appears from the graph that the popularity of pizzas and hamburgers
rose substantially. Nevertheless, the demand of pizza was constant over a period of 1995 to
2000 and it was nearly eaten 85 times in a year. On the other side, the consumption rate of
hamburgers exponentially increased from 1985 to 2000 and the number of eaten times per
year was just above 100 times.

● You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

● Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information in the graph below.

● Write at least 150 words.

During the first 20 years, a reversed trend was evident in the

levels of smokers among men and women. Particularly, regarding
the number of male smokers, this figure had reached a peak of
600 in 1960 before witnessing a gradually considerable decline
down to just under 500 by 1980. By contrast, the number of
women who smoked tripled, rising from just under 100 in 1960 to
well over 300 20 years later.

The given line graph compares the levels of smoking men and women = THE SMOKING RATES OF MEN AND
WOMEN/male and female smokers (out of 1000 people) within 40 years since 1960 in Someland.

Overall, while the number of male smokers = THE NUMBER OF MALES WHO SMOKE decreases
significantly/considerably after 40 years, that of the counterpart increases considerably. It is also clear that men at
all time = always smoke more than women./IT IS ALSO CLEAR THAT THE SMOKING RATE OF MEN IS ALWAYS
HIGHER THAN THAT OF WOMEN.

It is also clear while in 1960 the rate of smokers btw men and women was 6 by 1, by 2000 this rate was nearly equal.

It is also clear that the figure for smoking men declines by more than a half = halves by the end of the period,
whereas that for women witnesses/experiences/undergoes/sees a double/twice-time increase.

RANKED THE LOWEST AT THE END OF THE PERIOD BY 2005.
