Abstract
Youth unemployment is a critical issue in the global south, particularly in Africa, which faces
challenges similar to those experienced by Asia in previous decades (FAO, 2018; Mueller et al.,
2019). Key contributing factors include an aging and declining farming sector, rapid population
growth, inadequate economic development, and a higher unemployment rate among low-skilled
workers (FAO, 2017). Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the highest rates of youth poverty, with
about 30% of its population living in poverty (A.D. Bank, 2019). Rural areas are home to a large
percentage of unemployed youth, and the youthful unemployment rate exceeds 60% (Castaneda
et al., 2018). In order to facilitate programs aimed at attracting, fostering, and preserving youth
involvement in farming in Ghana, these knowledge gaps need to be filled. The researcher intend
to identify and analyze the motivations and interests that drive youth participation in agricultural
activities in Ghana, investigate the challenges and barriers faced by young individuals engaged in
various aspects of the agricultural, assess the impact of youth involvement on the productivity,
innovation, and sustainability of Ghana's agricultural practices, and examine the potential
socioeconomic outcomes of youth engagement in agriculture. A cross-sectional survey design
was adapted and the study was done in Upper Denkyira West of the central region of Ghana. The
study reveals that while many young people are passionate about farming, a significant number
are ambivalent, highlighting the need for targeted initiatives to boost youth engagement in
agriculture. Challenges include negative societal views of agriculture, its physical demands,
financial and technological hurdles, and limited market access. Strategies to overcome these
issues should enhance education and training in modern farming techniques, improve financial
support options like grants and loans, address infrastructural needs, and create mentorship
programs. Additionally, changing public perceptions through awareness campaigns and success
stories can make agriculture more appealing as a career. Youth involvement in agriculture
presents vast opportunities for economic growth and sustainability. By tackling these challenges
and offering appropriate support, a favorable environment for young farmers can be established.
This study provides essential insights for policymakers and stakeholders to design effective
interventions, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable agricultural future by leveraging the potential of
the youth.
