Glaciers of Himachal Pradesh

Glacier in Chandra valley of Lahul and Spiti


1. Bara Shigri
• It is the largest glacier in Himachal located in Chandra valley of Lahul.
• The length of the Glacier is 25km.
• This glacier gets water from Chandra River and feeds Chenab.
• It is said in 1936 this glacier caused a great havoc in Chandra valley
and formed a large lake known as Chandertal.
• It is world’s second largest glacier.
• Captain Harcourt conquered the Shigri glacier in 1869 AD.
• Walker and E.H. Pascoe were the member of Geological Survey team
visited Bara Shigri glacier in 1906 AD.
2. Gyephang glacier
• It is named after Gyephang God of Lhaul.
• Gyephang peak is called “Manimahesh of Lahul”.
• Gyephang peak is similar to Matterhorn in Switzerland.
3. Chandra glacier
• This is originally separated from Bara Shigri.
• It feeds river Chandra.
• It can be reached via Koksar.
4. Kulti glacier
• It is located near Koksar in Lahul spiti.

1. Bhaga glacier
• Bhaga River originates from this glacier.
• It is located in lahaul valley.
• The route of Koksar and Tandi is taken to reach it.
2. Lady of Keylong Glacier
• It’s height is 6061m and can be seen from Keylong.
• It was named after “Lady Elashainghday” during British rule.
• When snow melts; it looks like a woman walking with a load on her
back.
3. Mukklia glacier
• The Mukila glacier of Bhaga valley is situated at the height of about
6478 m

1. Sonapani Glacier: - It is located near Kulti nala.
2. Perad Glacier: - It can be reached from Putiruni.

1. Dudhaon Glacier: - Parvati River gets water from this glacier.

from the Beas.

• It is located in Pir Panjal range in Bara Banghal of Kangra.

3. Gara Glacier
• It is located in Kinnaur district.
• This glacier provides water to the Gara Khad [the tributary of Satluj].

• Glaciers in local language (Himachali) are known as “Shigri”.
• Andrew Wilson a European traveler called Lahaul in 1873 AD as ‘The
Valley of Glaciers’.
• Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment (SASE), a wing of Defense
Research Development Organization (DRDO), is located at Manali.
• Sonapani glacier was first surveyed by Walker & Pascoe in 1906 AD.
• In 1858 AD, Stephenson trekked Bara Shigri glacier.
• In 1970 AD, Bara Shigri glacier was scaled by Major Baljit Singh of
Indian Army.
