a) Describe how passenger ships are different from others. Hint: carry people from one place to another,
some are like hotels on water, provide luxury and entertainment, are also used as troopships.
b) What facilities on the ship ensure that your cruise is enjoyable? (Refer to ‘Luxury facilities on board’ from
the chapter)
c) Who are the people who work on a ship? What are their duties? (Refer to ‘Working on a ship’ from the
chapter)
d) Why are Ports important? Differentiate between a port and a harbor. Ports are important since they
account for all the economic activities in a coastal area as they form the major connection between land and
sea. For countries surrounded by sea, such as Japan, ports contribute to the major trading activity of the
country. DIFFERENCE: Harbour is a place on the coast which generally shelters ships and it is not man-made
and is a natural unit. Harbours provide less facilities than ports. Whereas, ports are locations where ships load
and unload cargo, dock, etc. Ports can be man-made or natural.
e) How do ships enter and leave the port/harbor?(Refer to ‘Ship in; Ship out’ from the chapter)
f) Which rule of the road do ships follow at sea? (Refer to ‘Traffic rules of the sea’ from the chapter)
