1. What was Mirta afraid of when she arrived home?
Would you expect her to be
afraid of leaving Cuba? Why/Why not?
She was afraid that her mother would tell her that they are leaving cuba. No
because i think its a good opportunity and they could finally meet thier friends
and family.
2. How does Ojito's father purchase a TV? How is this different than life as we
know it?
He had to save up from months of work and buy coupons from a friend. That friend
also doanates the TV. It is diffrent because it is not as hard to get a TV in
america because it has a better economy.
3. How is Ojito reminded about life before Castro? What do these differences imply
about life with Castro as the leader?
She is reminded because her father and motherwould tell her about their luxurious
life befor castro and how they want her to live the same way. This implys that
castro was a bad leader who made everything poor and made their lives horible.
4. Pgs. 17-18: [R.2.1] What does the compare and contrast structure reveal about
how live in Cuba differs from life in the U.S.?
It show how poor cuba is and how the american economy is a bank comparing to a
cardboard box and how it is just paradise in america. It also shows that the stuff
in America that are easy to get and most people have them is very hard to get in
cuba for example the soap in cuba was verry expensive but in america it essential
to have them.
5. Pgs. 17-18: What is learned about private property in revolutionary Cuba?
That the private property wasn’t owned by anyone (probably because its owned by
the government). It is also a little expensive comparing to her dad’s salary. And
that it was normally small.
6. Pgs. 17-18: [V.1.3] What does it mean to be "beyond reproach"? How does "beyond
reproach" differ from "flawless
Reproach means dissapprovle or dissatisfaction. So to be beyond reproach means
that her mother knows that she is so good she trusts her and she doesn’t even try
to be afriad about her grades because they are always good.
7. Pg. 18: [R.2.1] When does this section begin? How do you know?
When there are bolded and capital words
8. Pgs. 18-21: How do the family's views on religion affect Mirta in school?
It affected her because the family beleive in christianity and they also believe
that they shouldn’t deny their religion which lead to the teacher treating her
badly and mocking her parents and also lead her into not being accepted in a top
school even though her grades were the best.
9. Pgs. 18-21: Explain the dichotomy of life being lived by the Ojito family.
The Ojito family wouldn’t live by the “normal” cuban rules. They beleive in
christianity and would get stuff from buying it in illegal stores. They would talk
to their family members in the US and would want to go to the US and leave cuba.
They don’t help their country and have opposed opinions to the beliefs that castro
had
10. Pgs. 18-21: The narrator describes the things she can and cannot lie about.
What is significant about her family's rules about lying?
The significant thing is that it shows how important religion or beliefs are to
them. Saying anything like that would probably lead to alot of consequences and it
also signifies the boldness of the family.
11. Pgs. 21-22: Why does Tania make fun of the narrator's mother?
Because she thinks it is dumb to believe in God because he doesn’t give as much as
fidel. Everything that keep them alive like food, water, and shelter is given by
fidel castro not God.
12. Pgs. 25-27: What happens during the end of the year assembly? How is the role
eventually given to Mirta ironic
There would be a student show where the teachers would pick their favorite
students and make the students show their talents. It was ironic because she had to
be a cuban soldier and her whole family don’t like cuba at all.
13. What is ironic about the gift given to Mirta by her teachers as a graduation
present?
What was ironic was that her gift was a book were there were pictures of dead
cuban soldiers fighting for cuba and she nor her family liked cuba and instead want
to leave it not fight for it.
14. Pgs. 27-29: What does Mirta learn when she picks up her student record? What
is significant about this information?
She learns that the record isn’t only about her grades but also about her personal
life like her beliefs and religion. It is significant because her family were a
counter revolutionary family which means they opposed everything that the country
was doing. And that lead to her ruining her future.
15. Pgs. 29-31: What happens between Mirta’s father and the president of the block
committee? How did this encounter change things for the Ojito family?
What happend is that she threatened him because he wouldn’t join the
revolutionary and especially when she could have called the cops because he was
buying stuff from the black market. He had to join her because they didn’t want to
be in trouble. Now the whole family was doing chores for the country.
16. Why did Mirta attend Castro’s speech? What is the significance of this action?
Because there was a near terorist attack by the americans and she wanted to hear
what he will say about it. She also saw all herfriends and everyone was coming to
hear the speach. The significanceof this action that she normally avoids his
speeches but now she was intrested. And the more she heard how castro was blaming
and cursing the Americans the she got scared and that lead to her run orleave the
speach.
17. Pgs. 31-33: Who is blamed for all of Cuba’s problems? Is this blame justified?
Why or why not.
The Americans were blamed. I think it was not justified because they made a
terorist atack on them but that was it and it could have been an accident. The
Americans didnt seem to do anything else that would show the hatered. It could also
be because he is a bad leader and made the country poorer.
18. What is significant about the Barbara Walters interview of Fidel Castro?
What was significant was that the interview asked a lot about the prisoners castro
kept and why he prisoned them and castrow was hesitate and didn’t have a clear
answer then there was another question about the Americans and he said that he like
the americans and doesn’t want to hurt thembut he is just definitely his country.
