SAINT-LAURENT SPORTS COMPLEX,CANADA

Sports Architecture, Extension

Montreal, Canada
Architects: HCMA Architecture + Design, Saucier + Perrotte architects
Area: 14300 m²
Year: 2017
Lead Architect: Gilles Saucier

The sculptural nature of the project creates a strong link between these two
natural elements in the urban fabric. Two angular objects — one prismatic, white
and translucent, the other darker and stretched horizontally — embrace the
specific programmatic functions of the project but simultaneously transcend
these, inviting users and passersby from the street, while serving as a signal for the
passage toward the park beyond.

Ultimately, the facility is designed to encourage sports participation and support

healthy lifestyles in the community. The design accomplishes this through the
integration of high-performance sports venues bound together by a network of
carefully considered social spaces. The result is a facility that supports the
development of the community and adapts to the changing demands of its users.

The earth tunnel in this complex contributes significantly to the
building’s sustainability goals by enhancing thermal regulation
and reducing energy consumption.
Passive Climate Control
Winter: The tunnel warms cold incoming air to reduce the
heating load on the building's HVAC system.
Summer: It cools hot incoming air, reducing the reliance on
mechanical air conditioning.
Energy Efficiency: By preconditioning the air, the earth tunnel
system significantly lowers the energy required for heating and
cooling, contributing to the building’s LEED Gold certification.
Improved Air Quality: As the air passes through the tunnel,
particulate matter and some impurities may settle out,
potentially improving the quality of the air entering the building.
Separation of Spaces
The planning process prioritized clear zoning for different
functions:
Aquatic Area: Includes a lap pool and leisure pool, positioned
with views of the outdoors for a calming experience.
Gymnasiums and Fitness Areas: Designed for flexibility to host
sports, fitness classes, and community events.
Social and Administrative Spaces: Meeting rooms and offices
are placed near the entrance for easy access.

Flow and Circulation

The layout ensures smooth circulation for visitors, with separate
pathways for athletes, casual visitors, and staff.
Natural wayfinding is supported by the building's transparency
and intuitive spatial design.
