Class & Section: [Your Class & Section]

Selected Sub-theme: Waste Management
Title of Project/Design: "Wastewater Treatment: Natural and Technological Solutions for Clean
Water"

Basic Principle of Science/Technology:

The project is based on the principles of filtration, natural absorption, and disinfection:
• Filtration involves the physical separation of solids and particulates from water using layers of
gravel, sand, and activated carbon.
• Natural Absorption is demonstrated through the use of a constructed wetland where plants and
soil absorb and break down pollutants.
• UV Disinfection utilizes ultraviolet light to kill harmful microorganisms in the water, making it
safe for reuse.

Portability:
The project is designed to be portable, with all components housed in small, manageable containers or
tanks. This makes it easy to transport and set up for demonstrations or exhibitions.

List of Materials Required (Eco-Friendly):

• Gravel and Sand (for physical filtration)
• Activated Carbon (for chemical filtration)
• Plants and Soil (for constructing a wetland model)
• UV Light (small-scale UV lamp for disinfection)
• Water Testing Kits (to measure contaminants)
• Small Tanks or Containers (for simulating wastewater systems)
• Pipes and Pumps (for water flow simulation)
• Recycled Plastic or Wood (for constructing the model’s base)

Execution/Presentation of Idea/Project/Design:
1. Setup of Filtration System: A multi-layer filtration system will be created using gravel, sand,
and activated carbon to physically and chemically filter the wastewater.
2. Constructed Wetland: A small-scale wetland will be built using plants and soil, simulating the
natural absorption and breakdown of pollutants.
3. UV Disinfection: The water will then pass through a UV light system to disinfect and kill
harmful microorganisms.
4. Water Testing: Samples of water will be collected before and after treatment. These will be
tested using water testing kits to measure levels of contaminants such as nitrates, phosphates,
and bacteria.
5. Data Analysis: Results will be analyzed and compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of each
treatment method.
6. Presentation: The project will be presented with clear explanations of each step, along with
visual aids such as charts and graphs showing the improvement in water quality after treatment.

A Brief Summary of the Project:

This project explores how natural and technological methods can be combined to treat wastewater
effectively. By setting up a small-scale model that includes physical filtration, natural absorption
through a constructed wetland, and UV disinfection, the project demonstrates how contaminants can be
removed from wastewater. The project emphasizes the importance of sustainable water management
and the potential for reusing treated water, contributing to environmental conservation.

Idea Based on Scalability and Utility for the Society:

The principles demonstrated in this project are scalable to larger, real-world applications. Constructed
wetlands, filtration systems, and UV disinfection can be implemented in communities, particularly in
areas facing water scarcity or pollution challenges. The project offers a low-cost, eco-friendly solution
to wastewater management, with significant potential for improving public health, conserving water
resources, and protecting the environment.
