A1. Answer (3) [1]
i = 1 + (n – 1) α = 1 + (3 × 0.5) = 2.5

So, NaCl contain i value 2 and having larger concentration due to this option 1 contains large osmotic
pressure.

In negative deviation average interaction of A–B molecules is more than average interactions of A–A or B–B
molecules. Therefore, ∆H will be negative. [1]

SECTION-B
Short Answer Type Questions:
A6. When the external pressure applied becomes more than the osmotic pressure of solution then the solvent
molecules from the solution pass through the semipermeable membrane to the solvent side and the process
is called reverse osmosis. [1]
Number of moles of solute
A7. Molality (m) =
Mass of solvent ( kg)
Molality of solution does not change with temperature of the solution because mass does not change with
temperature. [1]
A8. Higher the value of Henry’s law constant KH, the lower is the solubility of gas in the liquid. [1]
True/False Type Questions:
A9. False
Solubility of a gas in liquid is an exothermic process. So, on increasing temperature, solubility decreases. [1]

A10. Minimum boiling azeotrope. [1]
SECTION-C
Short Answer Type Questions:
A11. Given:
Weight of glucose, w2 = 0.520 g
Weight of solvent, w1 = 80.2 g [½]
Kb = 0.52 K mol–1 kg
Molar mass of glucose, M2 = 180 g mol–1
K × w 2 × 1000
∆Tb =b [½]
M2 × w1
0.52 × 0.520 × 1000

Boiling point of solution, Tb = Tb° + ∆Tb
= 373 K + 0.019 K

A12. (i) 1.2% sodium chloride solution is hypertonic with respect to 0.9% sodium chloride solution, so placing
blood cells in this solution will shrink them. [1]
(ii) 0.4% sodium chloride solution is hypotonic with respect to 0.9% sodium chloride solution, so placing
blood cells in this solution will expand them. [1]
A13. Henry’s Law: The solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas present
above the surface of liquid. [½]
P = KHx where KH is Henry’s law constant. [½]
Application: To increase the solubility of CO2 in soft drinks and soda water. [1]

Q16. The elements which give the greatest number of oxidation states occur in or near the middle of the series.
Manganese, for example, exhibits all the oxidation states from +2 to +7. The lesser number of oxidation states
at the extreme ends. The maximum oxidation states of reasonable stability correspond in value to the sum of
the s and d electrons up to manganese. The variability of oxidation states, a characteristic of transition
elements, arises out of incomplete filling of d orbitals in such a way that their oxidation states differ from each
other by unity, e.g., VII, VIII, VIV, VV.
The highest oxidation numbers are achieved with fluorine and oxygen like TiX4 (tetrahalides), VF5, CrF3 –
CrF6 and the highest oxidation number in the oxides coincides with the group number and is attained in Sc2O3
to Mn2O7. The ability of fluorine to stabilise the highest oxidation state is due to higher lattice energy. Low
-acceptor character in addition
-bonding. For example, in Ni(CO)4 and Fe(CO)5, As the oxidation number of a metal increases, ionic
character decreases. In the case of Mn, Mn2O7 is a covalent green oil. Even CrO3 and V2O5 have low melting
points. In these higher oxides, the acidic character is predominant and vice versa.
(1) Why is +7 oxidation state of Mn found in oxide but not in fluoride? [2]
(2) Name a transition element which does not exhibit variable oxidation state. [1]
(3) Among Cl2O7, Mn2O7, CrO3, and V2O5 which is least acidic and why? [2]

A3. Answer (2) [1]

A7. Due to lanthanoid contraction, the elements of 4d and 5d series have similar atomic radii, eg. Zr = 145 pm
and Hf = 144 pm [1]
A8. Third ionization enthalpy of Mn is very high because the third electron has to be removed from the stable half-

SECTION-C
Short Answer Type Questions:
A11. Elements which have incompletely filled d-orbitals in their ground state or in any one of their oxidation states
are called transition elements
Characteristics of transition elements
(1) They show variable oxidation state. [1]
(2) They exhibit catalytic properties. [1]
A12. Copper (I) compounds are unstable in aqueous solution and undergo disproportionation. [2]
2Cu+ 2+ + Cu
The stability of Cu2+(aq) rather than Cu+(aq) is due to the much more negative hydration of Cu2+(aq) than Cu+.
A13. Mn in MnO4– has +7 oxidation state which is its highest possible oxidation state. [2]
It cannot be oxidised further. Hence, it cannot undergo disproportionation.
A14. Lanthanoid contraction : The steady decrease in the atomic and ionic radii of lanthanoid elements with
increase in atomic number is called lanthanoid contraction. It is caused due to imperfect shielding of nuclear
charge by 4f electrons. [2]
Consequences of lanthanoid contraction. [1]
• The basic strength of oxides and hydroxides of lanthanoids decrease with increasing atomic number
• Atomic and ionic sizes of 4d transition series elements and 5d transition series elements are similar
example atomic radii of Zr is same as that of Hf. [1]
SECTION-D
Long Answer Type Question:
A15. (i) (a) Stability of ions in aqueous state depends on hydration energy due to small size Cr+3 is more stable
[2]
(b) Mn+3 is strong oxidising agent as Mn+2 is more stable than Mn+3 due to its half filled configuration. [2]
(c) Ti+4 is colourless ion due to d0 configuration of ion. [1]
OR
(a) As transition metals have a large number of unpaired electrons in the d-orbitals of their atoms they have
strong interatomic attraction or metallic bonds. Hence they have high enthalpy of atomisation. [2]
(b) Cr2+ is stronger reducing agent than Fe2+ because d4 d3 occurs in case of Cr2+ to Cr3+
But d6 d5 occurs in case of Fe2+ to Fe3+
In a medium (like water) d3 configuration is more stable as compared to d5 configuration. [2]

Q16. The d-block consisting of group 3-12 occupies the large middle section of the periodic table. In these elements
the inner d orbitals are progressively filled. The involvement of (n-1)d electrons in the behaviour of transition
elements impart certain distinct characteristics to these elements. Thus, in addition to variable oxidation
states, they exhibit paramagnetic behaviour, catalytic properties and tendency for the formation of coloured
ions, interstitial compounds etc. Also, oxometallic salts of d-block elements like KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 are good
oxidising agent.

SECTION-C
Short Answer Type Questions:
A11. The high melting points of d-block metals are attributed to the involvement of greater number of electrons
from (n-1) d in addition to the ns electron in the interatomic metallic bonding. [2]
A12. Transition metal and most of their compounds contain unpaired electrons in the (n – 1) d orbitals hence show
paramagnetic behaviour. [2]
A13. Ce(Z = 58) = [Xe]54 4f15d16s2 [1]
Ce3+ = [Xe]54 4f1
So, it has only one unpaired electron i.e. n = 1 [½]

A14. (a) On moving left to right in the lanthanoid series, the ionic radii of Ln3+ ion decreases because of lanthanoid
contraction. [1]
Correct order of ionic radii is
Lu3+ < Er3+ < Eu3+ < Pm3+ [1]
(b) Lanthanum forms +3 oxidation state by the removal of all the three electrons from the outermost shell
resulting in noble gas configuration of Xenon. To form La4+, the electron has to be removed from stable
Xenon core which is very difficult . Thus, La4+ cannot exist. [2]
