se Guide aeWelcome toe
Pride in Belper exists to normalise the visibility of
LGBTQ+ people, encourage inclusion, and celebrate the
diversity of identity for everyone within our commu
We do this through the four pillars on which Pride in Belper
was first developed: Sustainability, Accessibility, Inclusivity
and Diversity. We hope that you will see these pillars reflected
in the events of the day and throughout other events that we
support throughout the year.
At Pride in Belper we believe that real inclusion should reflect
an unedited society, and so we welcome EVERYONE to Pride,
but we ask you to challenge and change beliefs and actions
which exclude, diminish, and discriminate against others.
We are grateful to all the local people and organisations who
have sponsored us this year, either with their time or money.
The whole event is organised to continue the development of
an inclusive culture within the town, no one involved in the
organising or delivery of it is paid, and any profit that is made
is ploughed back into planning and delivering the next
LGBTQ+ event in Belper.
Pride events are important because they provide a platform
for L@BTQ+ people to be visible at the same level as straight
people and to celebrate their identity openly. This visibility
helps challenge stereotypes in communities and families,
reduces stigma, and provides representation for LGBTQ+
people who may feel isolated or marginalised in their daily
lives, Pride is also about creating a sense of unity and
understanding among diverse communities. This unity is a
powerful way to challenge discrimination and promote
inclusivity.

Pride MUST remain a protest, as well as a
celebration
Since 2019, Pride in Belper has created
greater social support for LGBTQ+ people, a
stronger safer community for everyone,
advocacy for all identities, and greater
awareness of inclusion and exclusion within
the community. We have achieved this
TOGETHER, and we should be proud of where’
we have got to - but there is still so much more
work to do to ensure everyone, especially our
Trans friends feel safer, feel seen and are
welcome within our community,
Pride in Belper promotes the idea that we have
a responsibility to make life better for each
other. Because of this, we ask you all to
become an ALLY for LGBTQ+ people by
continuing to make PRIDE a PROTEST for
dignity, justice, and rights
CELEBRATION of diversity and inclusion. We
ask you to do this today, and tomorrow until
the world really is equal. Because until we are:
ALL equal, none of us are!
If we stand up for each other, we will be a
much more inclusive and welcoming place that
openly values and respects the richness of our
difference and diversity, and it will be easier
for us all to feel as though we are welcome and
belong in Belper.

Marsha the Mermaid has been made by
Caroline Irwin of Creative Arts Belper, with
‘support from Suz Hennesey, Toni Marie,
Jenny Lesley, Neil Hunt, Victoria, and Amelie.
Marsha has been made with purpose and
love, as well as some of the recycled LGBTO+
flags Pride in Belper have used previously
along the High Street.
Caroline has also used recycled paper,
chicken wire, PVA glue and paint that she has
had left over from other projects.
Marsha P Johnson
The Mermaid is called Marsha after the
LGBTQ+ Role Model, Marsha P. Johnson, a
prominent LGBTQ+ rights activist in the
1960s and 1970s who lived in New York.
Marsha was a Black transgender activist and
a key figure in the gay liberation movement in
New York. On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall
Inn, was subject to another brutal and
unprovoked police raid.
‘This was one raid too many for the LGBTQ+
community, and this time they fought back
through spontaneous demonstrations and
clashes with law enforcement.
These events, known as the Stonewall Riots,
are widely regarded as a catalyst for the
modern LGBTO+ rights movements that we
still have today.
While there were many people involver
LGBTQ+ uprising at the Stonewall inn,
Marsha P. Johnson is often remembered as
one of the prominent figures involved.
She continued to be a vocal advocate for
LGBTO+ rights throughout her life, co-
founding the activist group Street
Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR)
and being an active participant in various
demonstrations and protests.
Marsha P. Johnson's dedication to the
LGBTQ+ community and her tireless activism
have made her a symbol of resilience, an
advocate for change and atrallblazer for
transgender rights.
the
Pride in Belper believes real inclusion must reflect an
unedited society, and consequently we welcome EVERYONE,
to Pride, but we ask you to challenge and change beliefs and
actions which exclude, diminish, and discriminate against
others.
We have no right to edit other people out of society,
communities, or families because of their identity.
For us, Marsha the Mermaid is a symbol of the continued
protest we all have a responsibility to make, until we live ina
world where everyone can feel safe, however they identify.
This year at Pride in Belper we have made our
wrist bands reflect the colours of the
transgender flag in solidarity with the
transgender people.
Rights for LGBQ+ people around the world
have come along way since 1969, but for
transgender people they have stalled and
more recently have begun to go backwards.
This is not okay.
