Misconceptions in Geometry
You will choose a partner to work with in this activity. The first thing you will need
to do is understand what a misconception is before attempting the activity.
1. What is a misconception?
2. You will then pick a topic (lines, angles, shapes, area, etc.).
3. You will then find a misconception on the topic.
a. State the misconception
b. State how it is a misconception
c. Correct the misconception
d. Re-teach how it should be
4. Come and OK your topic with me.
5. In partners you will then present your information in your chosen way:
a. Skit (either real time or video)
b. Comic/Poster
c. Worded Response
d. Audio recording
Misconceptions in Geometry
We will spend a Thursday and Friday working on this in class. The DRAFT will be
due Wednesday March 1 at the end of the day (3pm sharp) into Managebac or
handed into me personally.
The summative will be due Wednesday March 8.
I will provide a handout with more detail tomorrow. This in itself will be a
formative and summative. The formative will be your rough draft, we will edit and
get feedback, and then the summative will be the final copy.

Angles
Today we will review
how to use a
protractor.
What is an angle?
It is two “rays”
connected at their
endpoint.
A ray is a line that
starts at a point.
Race Around the World!
We are going to do an activity that involves racing around the world.
Then we are going to learn how angles work with each other and rules that
follow it.

Triangles
Triangles - Investigation Criteria B
In the activity given, it will be your job to add up all the angles in a triangle.
1. Write what each triangle is added up to.
2. Is there a pattern?
3. Write this pattern as a general rule.
4. Create your own triangle and see if it fits your rule.
5. Complete the practice on finding angles (other side of sheet) in triangles
based on the rule you have found.
6. Play the this online game when finished!

Monday - Hypotenuse
The hypotenuse is the side of the triangle that
is opposite of the right angle within the
triangle. It is always the longest side of the
triangle.
You will be doing a formative tomorrow.
Remember these important facts about the
hypotenuse!
After this, start to work on your archery
assignment.

Perimeter, Area, and
Volume
Perimeter and Area
By now you should be comfortable with perimeter and area.
Perimeter: sum of all sides (unit without exponent)
Area: space within the sides (units are squared)
Perimeter and Area
1. Find the perimeter, area and length of the diagonal of the rectangle when …………
(a) length = 35 cm width = 12 cm
(b) length = 12 m width = 5 m
(c) length = 24 m width = 7 m
2. The perimeter of a rectangle is 326 cm and its length is 98 cm. Find its width and area.
3. The perimeter of a rectangle is 50 m and its width is 12 m. Find its length and area.
4. The length and diagonal of a rectangle are 40 cm and 41 cm. Find its width and perimeter.
5. Find the width and perimeter of a rectangle if its length is 36 m and its area is 540 m².
6. Find the length and perimeter of a rectangle if its width and area are 19 m and 475 m².
7. The sides of a rectangle are in the ratio 4 : 5 and its perimeter is 90 cm. Find the dimensions of the rectangle and hence
its area.
10. Find the cost of flooring the verandah at the rate of $12 per m² if the length and width of the verandah are in the ratio
3 : 2 and its perimeter is 40 m.
If you’re finished, you can move onto playing these games online: http://interactivesites.weebly.com/areaperimeter.html
Circles
Investigation on Circles
1. Take a strip of paper and measure it
2. Take the two ends and tape them together to create a circle
3. … Step 1 can now be called the “__________________” of the circle.
4. Measure the diameter of the circle - make sure you’re not squishing it in any way.
5. Divide Step 3 by Step 4. The number I get is…. ________________. Round to the nearest hundredth.
6. Check your answer with a partners, is it the same? Check with someone else, same?
Investigation on Circles
You and your class should have arrived at the same number. Just like the Golden Ratio,
this number is always constant (stays the same), and has a name. This name of this
number is Pi. So, if...
circumference
diameter
= Pi (3.14)
Then can we use Pi to figure out the circumference or diameter of a given circle?
YES!
Of course it can. All we need to do is rearrange the equation to circumference is on it’s own...
circumference
diameter
= Pi (3.14)
To find circumference, we “move” diameter over, since we divide on one side, we cancel by
multiplying it. Whatever we do to one side, we do to the other!
circumference
diameter * diameter = Pi (3.14) diameter
*
Then we are left with our equation!!
circumference = Pi (3.14)
* diameter

Problem:
What is surface area?
Surface area is the area all around a 3D shape. To do this we need to find the
shape of each of the sides, and then add all of them together.
For example:
