Abstract

With AI being integrated into everyone's lives, there has been a fear that AI would one day take

over jobs that computers can do more efficiently. One of these fields is the art industry, where

AI-generated images have become so familiar in the workplace that there wouldn't be any need

for artists and graphic designers. Also, there is a debate about whether using AI-generated

images is ethical in the first place, as AI images are being programmed by using other smaller

artists' styles and using them in their programs. This report will dive into what AI art is and

whether it will soon be the downfall of many artists or will benefit them in the long run as AI

becomes more complex and their capabilities.

In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely discussed as

it has become a part of our everyday lives. It is now prevalent everywhere, and its uses date back

to as early as the 1950s. From our phones to process centers, AI has dramatically improved our

ability to correct errors made by humans, even providing us with random facts upon request.

Now, artificial intelligence has been in the spotlight because of the question of whether this

technology will take over jobs in the future or have no hinderance. With AI able to do jobs as

well as, or better than, humans, there has been a serious debate about whether AI will take over

the job market. AI has impacted several fields, and one area in particular is the art industry,

especially graphic design, with the introduction of AI-generated art. AI-generated art is exactly

as it sounds; it is generated using machine learning algorithms and neural networks to create new

artwork based on user input. Since artwork can be generated in seconds rather than hours, many

are skeptical whether this new way of art will hurt in the long run. However, there is a lack of

evidence that this will happen in the future since this technology is still relatively new to the

market. By utilizing AI tools, artists can explore new ways of their creative process, experiment

with new techniques, and generate unique and innovative pieces of work.

With technology nowadays, many artists that post on social media are at the mercy of the

algorithm. If content isn’t posted frequently, it won’t be as advertised, and the artist who depends

on this income will be significantly affected. While the solution may seem to be creating more

content more frequently, this can be a daunting task for artists, leading to a decline in the quality

of their work. Many artists will, at some point, have a creative block that fogs their minds of

being able to think of new and fun ideas. Also, not even that; having the time to produce pieces

requires much time and can be grueling for the artist. All of this has caused many smaller artists

to be lost in the whirlpool of the algorithm since they can’t keep up with the workload. AI

integration within popular art programs like Adobe and Clip Studios has drastically changed the

negative impact on artists. With AI's help, artists can channel their creativity more effectively

and take their art to the next level. “The ability to think in a non-linear, multidimensional

manner can encourage individuals to explore beyond their usual cognitive biases and horizons,

fostering innovative thinking and problem-solving.” (Soren Kaplan) Using AI-generated engines

like Adobe Firefly, you can easily input a prompt and browse through a vast array of images

created by the engine until you find the one that fits your idea. This approach lays a strong

foundation for your work and can significantly enhance its quality by eliminating the

unnecessary stress of achieving the ideal proportions. Now, this has led many to be concerned

about this program. Those who solely rely on AI-generated ideas can dilute the pool of creativity

since this could lead to many copies being the same. According to an NYU report, “Relying too

heavily on AI-generated elements can hinder an artist's own creative skills. Artists might become

dependent on AI for ideas, stifling their ability to innovate and think critically.” (Fortino)

However, this is not the fault of AI-generated images since this challenge relies on the artist to

overcome and figure out a way to intertwine technology with their ideas. These tools enhance the

item's work by allowing the artist to have a base layer they can work off.

AI tools and AI-generated images are very similar in many ways. However, the main

difference is that generated images create the whole image, whereas AI-generated tools only pick

specific parts of the picture to change. For example, in AI General images, you would type a girl

standing next to a tree into the prompt, and a variety of images of a girl standing next to a tree

would appear. For AI tools, you select a picture of a girl, select a box next to her, and type a tree

in the prompt, and a tree will generate within the box. These tools are handy for individuals who

may not possess the skill of creating art by hand and those who want to add visual elements to

their images. Adobe offers a range of AI-powered tools that can assist with graphic design and

photography tasks. By utilizing Adobe Creative Cloud, you can easily create logos and images

with just a few clicks. This program is for those interested in photography, graphic design, video

editing, drawing, painting, social media, and more. This versatile program is designed to help

those who may be challenged with being creative or just don't have the time to design fully, so

these AI tools can create and generate defense ideas that help to work the workload of many.

AI-generated images and tools, there has been a debate about the ethical implications of using

AI-generated images, as they are often created using the work of other artists. As stated before,

AI has been more accessible since many companies are now integrating it into their systems.

However, since this is a new technology, not a lot is known about the legal side of things, and as

of recently there have been movements on the legality of using AI. Eva Toorenent is a freelance

illustrator, and she's one of the founders of E.G.A.I.R. (European Code for artificial intelligence

regulation). She believes that companies who use artists' work for programming their AI should

be compensated in some way. Adobe is implementing a system where artists or illustrators use

their program will be credited if their style or work is used to program AI. However, one thing

that is often overlooked about AI is that it cannot replicate human creativity in the same way. Its

capabilities are static and limited. While AI can generate an image, it cannot create multiple

angles of the same image without altering the entire image itself. Therefore, it may be easier to

use a single image, but it still needs a human touch to bring it to life. In addition, a lot of

programming is required to make it fit perfectly with the vision of what the AI is asking for.

As the world evolves and AI becomes more prevalent, people who have interacted with

AI often wonder if it will eventually replace human workers. However, there are legal actions

being taken and considerations being made for AI-generated images and tools. At present, AI is

mostly used as a tool to create and produce high-quality images. The future is uncertain when it

comes to the legality and ethics of using AI in art. But people should not fear AI. Instead, they

should see it as a companion that can work alongside them.
