37. Chemistry in Automobiles 4
For an internal combustion engine to move vehicle down the road, it must convert the energy stored in the fuel
into the mechanical energy to drive the wheels.
In your car, the distributer and battery provide this starting energy by creating an
electric spark, which helps in combustion of fuels like gasoline. Below is the reaction depicting complete
combustion of gasoline in full supply of air.

38. The endocrine system regulates the body’s processes by releasing chemical messengers(hormones)
into the blood stream. Hormones are potent chemical regulators. They are produced in minute quantities yet can
have a large effect on metabolism. 4
The endocrine system comprises endocrine cells and the hormones they produce.
Unlike exocrine glands, endocrine glands are ductless glands, secreting hormones directly into the bloodstream
rather than through the duct or tube. Some organs have both endocrine and exocrine regions, but these
structurally and functionally act distinct.
(i) Select the mismatched pair (a)Adrenaline: Pituitary gland (b)Testosterone: Testes (c)Oestrogen: Ovary
(d)Thyroxine: Thyroid gland
(ii) At the time of puberty both boys and girls show changes in appearance. Name the hormones
responsible for these changes.
(iii) Name the endocrine glands associated with brain.
(iv) Name a gland which is both endocrine as well as exocrine.
39. When a ray of light moving in a medium enters obliquely in another medium, it bends from its paths
This phenomenon is called refraction of light. The ability of a
medium to refract light is expressed in terms of optical density. The term optical density is not the same as mass
density.
