COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:
This course is designed for students who want to improve their English for personal, academic or
professional purposes. It is a course suitable for both the students who are not working yet and those
already in employment. The course provides a clear structural progression, which can be seen
throughout the program.
General Objectives:
To provide learners with the necessary knowledge to enhance their speaking skills in a
conversation or oral situation in present or future jobs, given them the terminology,
vocabulary, and every day expressions use nowadays to achieve professional success.
To develop students’ ability to communicate orally and written in English.
Specific Objectives:
To practice giving and asking for opinions in formal and informal contexts.
To practice using a variety of vocabulary for developing an argument.
To use a variety of techniques for agreeing and disagreeing such as, using standard phrases,
agreeing with a synonym, etc.
To practice a variety of structures for speaking carefully in a meeting.
To provide a framework for practicing a real-life discussion.
To review the differences between spoken and written language.

Exchange information in order to complete a task (information-gap activities).

Write sentences and paragraphs using the requested language structures.
Read English texts and answer questions about the content of the reading selections.

Keep in Mind …
Attendance & punctuality to online sessions are mandatory.
Submission of work:
Page Heading: Family Name, Student ID, Date, Assignment# ____.
A4 paper format.
Times New Roman, 12 font, black, 1.5-spaced. Texts should be justified.
Name and student ID at the top of your MS Word document in all your work.
Any work submitted after the due date and without an extension request or permission in
writing will be treated as overdue and deductions will be applied.
An overdue assignment will be reduced by up to 10 percent.
Each day after that an assignment is submitted, it will be deducted 5%.
Overdue assignments that are submitted more than two days late will not be graded.
HOW TO REQUEST AN EXTENSION
In serious circumstances the request should:
Be made by email at least 2-3 days BEFORE the due date for the assignment providing an
explanation of the circumstances.
The explanation must be supported by a medical certificate, company letter or other
documentation.
If an extension is granted, student will be given a new due date. Only ONE extension can be
granted to a student per assignment. Only in extreme circumstances will late requests for
extensions be considered.
Serious circumstances means sudden illness (in the case of tests, quizzes, etc.) or long-term
illness (for essays etc. done over a week or more). It does NOT mean time management
difficulties, wanting to go on holiday, relatives visiting from overseas, computer breakdowns,
etc.
