Complexometric Titration

The experiment aims to determine the total hardness of water through complexometric titration using EDTA and Erichrome Black T as an indicator. The presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions in water forms a wine red complex with EBT, which turns blue upon the addition of EDTA. The total hardness is calculated based on the volume of Na2EDTA used in the titration, with precautions noted to avoid exposure to harmful substances.

Title of experiment: Determination of total water hardness by complexometric titration

Objective – Estimation of Total Hardness of water

Theory – Total hardness of water is considered as mainly due to presence Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Both Ca2+ and
Mg2+ ions form complex of wine red colour with Erichrome Black T (EBT) at pH of 10 .The EDTA has
stronger affinity towards Ca2+ and Mg2+ and therefore by the addition of EDTA the former complex is broken
down and makes the indicator free which gives blue colour of the solution

Ca2+/Mg2+ + Indicator (EBT)  Ca2+/Mg2+EBT complex → Ca/MgEDTA chelate complex + Indicator

Apparatus required: 250 mL conical flask, burette, 100 mL beaker, measuring cylinder.

Chemicals required: NH4Cl - NH4OH buffer, EBT indicator, Na2EDTA, water samples.

Result:

Total Hardness present in the given sample is =....................................... ppm

Precaution:

End point should be observed carefully.

Care should be taken during the experiment to avoid the exposure of liquid ammonia in the eyes.
