CRITERIA A – PLANNING

Connection of personal interest to my project

At a very young age, I discovered my interest in art and literature. Experimenting with different
mediums and techniques is something I have always enjoyed. Creating realistic graphite portraits is
my forte. Writing acts as an outlet for me to express my deepest emotions. I find comfort in
expressing my feelings through words. When the opportunity for the Personal Project presented itself,
I instantly had an idea which combined my passion for art and literature.
There are many individuals in my life who have impacted the way I see the world and have guided me
through life’s obstacles. Through this project, I want to explore my creative abilities by using art and
literature to express my gratitude towards these individuals. I will create realistic portraits of the
people who have impacted my life and create a brief write-up about how they impacted my life.
Exhibiting my art in a gallery setting has been a goal of mine for a long time and this project gives me
the perfect opportunity to achieve it. In order to present my artworks to an audience, I will exhibit
them in an in-school art exhibition.

My learning goal
Even though I have quite a lot of knowledge regarding pencil portraits, I believe that there’s always a
scope of improvement. I plan to learn art techniques that help me make my portraits look more
realistic and professional. This will be achieved through the use of online resources as well as help
from professionals. These are the following techniques I plan to understand proportions (Grid
method) and learn shading, contouring, details and texture techniques.
To incorporate literature in my project, I will be writing short pieces about the impact certain
individuals have had on my life. Literature tends to be expressive and to help bring out emotions in
my writing, I will expand knowledge of figurative language, tone, mood, pathos and conciseness with
the help of my English teachers as well as online research.
Exhibiting art in a gallery setting is an entirely new experience for me. Through research, I plan to
acquire organizational skills (I will learn how to develop a detailed plan for the exhibition including
the date and venue), marketing and promotion (I will learn how to use social media platforms to
promote my exhibition), presentation and installation (I will learn how to design an effective layout
for the exhibition to create a flow that guides visitors through my work), and communication skills (I
will learn how to improve my communication skills in order to professionally interact with visitors).

My product goal
The realistic graphite portraits I will create will be the main product of my project. I will create 6
realistic portraits in total. The artworks will be accompanied by the write-ups. The exhibition is a way
to showcase my artworks, which is the product. This product goal is highly challenging because it is
very personal to me. Expressing feelings can be emotionally challenging and requires you to have a
good understanding of your emotions. My product also require a high level of creative thinking. This
project pushes me to further develop my artistic skills and create portraits that capture the essence and
emotions of each individual. I will also need to ensure that my writing conveys emotions effectively.
Both of these tasks are highly time consuming, and time-management can be a challenge when
considering other academic commitments. Both art and literature require different skillsets and
ensuring that both products are of high quality can be difficult. Exhibiting my artworks is an entirely
new experience for me and successfully executing it will be a challenge.

CRITERIA B – APPLYING SKILLS

ATL Skills
Learning goal –

• Communication skills – My product required a lot of learning and in order to gain

knowledge, I needed to communicate with professionals. I used communication skills to
contact artists and request interviews with them. I also used communication skills to
promote my works in local art communities and get feedback from experienced artists.
Even though most of the communication was online due to geographical constraints, this
helped me gain relevant and helpful information for my product and improve on my
communication skills.

I sent emails to my IB MYP English This is the message I sent to British

teacher requesting an interview with artist Charlotte Oxenham requesting a

Page | 6
Personal Project Report 23 - 24

On the same website where I found Charlotte, I found an artist named Louan Walker
who specializes in custom portraiture, mixed media artworks and murals. I reached
out to her requesting an interview but unfortunately, I received her reply quite late and
couldn’t find time to have a meeting with her.

• Research skills - Throughout my project, I had to do extensive research about art and
literary techniques as well improving my communication skills. I carried out a CRAAP
test for all the websites I used for my research. This was helpful as it proved the reliability
of the website. I also used several primary sources for my research, such as books and
interviews, to expand my knowledge of literature and art.

Page | 7
Personal Project Report 23 - 24

Product goal –

• Thinking Skills – I have used creative thinking skills throughout my project.

Artworks – Creating the artworks required a lot of technical skills. Each portrait has
different requirements of shading, harshness of strokes and the level of detail. Each
picture I chose had a different emotion and depicting the emotion naturally required a
deep level of understanding of conveying emotions through art. The individuals I chose
have different ages ranging from 15 – 70. As a person ages, their features start looking
different and all the portraits I created required a different level of precision due to their
ages. The technical decisions made required a lot of creative thinking and a good
understanding of the medium, Graphite. Adjusting the compositions and reworking them
also involved creative thinking as I had to fix my mistakes and make them look
intentional.

Page | 8
Personal Project Report 23 - 24

Exhibition – In school, the place to set up the exhibition is very limited and restricted
therefore, I had to use creative thinking skills to plan out an effective layout. I also
had to create an exhibition that was attractive and appealing to both students and
parents. Coming up with a theme that was consistent and went well with my artworks
was a creative task. It was important for my artworks to be exhibited properly and in
an organized manner, so I applied my creative thinking skills to set up the best way to
present my work. In order to promote my exhibition, I also had to create aesthetically
appealing posters, which effectively communicated all the important details.

Literary works – Writing involves a lot of creativity, especially incorporating emotion in

writing. It is a form of artistic expression which requires one to push the boundaries. Evoking
emotion in readers involves the use of a lot of techniques and if used incorrectly, makes the
writing seem amateur. I had to use a lot of creative thinking while using various literary
devices in my writing to ensure that it is understandable and makes sense.

• Self-management – Self – management was a crucial part of my project. I had to create 6

artworks, 6 write – ups within and do an exhibition in the given timeframe as well as
focus on assessments and daily studies. I used the ‘Eisenhower Decision Matrix’ to help
me prioritize tasks based on the importance and urgency. I also annotated my calendar so
that I would have clear plan of action and a guide to follow. I tend to procrastinate a lot
and in order to avoid it, I

Page | 9
Personal Project Report 23 - 24

started using the ‘Pomodoro Technique’ which recommended taking a 5-minute break
after 25 minutes of working without any distractions. It was a bit difficult to enforce the
technique into my daily studying routine but eventually, I had managed to improve my
productivity. I also work better under pressure; therefore, I created deadlines for all my
tasks to help me finish work on time and stay on track.

Reflection - Throughout my project, I had the opportunity to develop and showcase my skills as a
communicator. The research involved extensive communication with professionals to gather the
necessary knowledge. Asking relevant questions was crucial in obtaining the information I needed,
highlighting the importance of effective communication skills for a lifetime. Art served as a
universal language through which I expressed emotions, both mine and those of the individuals
portrayed. Additionally, my literary works conveyed my personal thoughts and feelings. The
exhibition further honed my communication abilities as I interacted with visitors from various
nationalities, overcoming language barriers. The project involved creating artworks, literary works,
and an exhibition, which required different skill sets but the same amount of creativity and emotion.
The artworks required learning about proportions, shading techniques, and highlighting emotions.
Writing the literary works was an intellectual task that demanded the correct use of different
techniques to evoke emotions in readers. Both art and literature were physically challenging tasks
that required dedication and labour. Hosting the exhibition was also a physical task that involved
talking to staff and visitors.
