A decimal has two parts—the whole number part and the decimal part. decimal part. The part on the left side of the dot is the whole number part and the part on right side is the For example, in the decimal number 72.09, 72 is the whole number and .09 is the decimal part. The word ‘decimal is derived from the Latin word decima means ‘one-tenth part’. 4 Without changing the value of decimal number, we can write as many zeroes on the extreme left of the whole number part as we want. For example, 0.5 = 00.5 = 000.5, 4. Without changing the value of decimal number, we can write as many zeroes on the extreme right of the decimal part as we want. For example, 0.5 = 0.50= 0.500 1 Natural numbers, whole numbers, odd numbers, even numbers, prime numbers et, can all be written as decimal numbers. Every fraction can be written as a decimal number. Expanded Notation for Decimal Numbers We know that5789 = 5000 + 700 + 80 + 9 is the expanded notation for number 5789. Similarly, decimal numbers can also be expanded. For example, and 147.2 =100 + 40+7+ 2 =100+ 4047402 ° ° 20 180.05 = 100+ 80 +0 + 2. +2 = 100 +80 +0+0.0 + 0.05 © re 10 100 °@ (Mathematics) ~) °O,@30 ° i imals. 2.657 and 2 Decimals having the same number of decimal places are called as like decimals. and 2. like decim: ‘als as the number of decimal places in both of them is 3. We have already learnt the multiplication of whole numbers and natural numbers. Now, we shalll learn multiplication of decimal fractions. Multiplication of Decimal Fraction by 10, 100 and 1000. Rule: When a decimal number is multiplied by 10, 100 or 1000, the digits in the product remains the same as in decimal number but the decimal point is shifted to : (1 place to the right if it is multiplied by 10. (ii) 2 places to the right if it is multiplied by 100. (iii) 3 places to the right if it is multiplied by 1000. We observe that when we multiply a decimal number by 10, or powers of 10, the product is obtained simply by shifting the decimal point to the right by as many places as the number of zeros in the multiplier after 1. For example: 126.735 x 10 = 1267.35 (Number of zeros after 1 is 1) 126.735 x 100 = 12673.5 (Number of zeros after 1 is 2) 126.735 x 1000 = 126735.0 (Number of zeros after 1 is 3) ©xample 1, Find 2.075 x 100.
