Theme: Mensuration of solid shapes.

Unit topic: Mensuration.
Lesson topic: Surface area of solid shapes.
Time: 11:10 -12:30
Duration: 80 minutes
Period: 5th
Specific objectives: At the end the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify a solid shape;
2. Recall the formulae for calculate the surface area of solid shape;
3. Identify the cross section for each solid shape;
4. Calculate the surface area of solid shapes.
Instructional resources: Some solid shapes.
Presentation:
------Step 1: Identification of students’ prior ideas.
Mode: whole class.
Teacher’s activities: leads the students in identifying the surface area of the solid shapes.

Cube Surface area = 6𝑙 2

Cuboids Surface area = 2(𝑙𝑏 + 𝑙ℎ + 𝑏ℎ)

Cylindercurved surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ

Total surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ + 2𝜋𝑟 2
= 2𝜋𝑟(ℎ + 𝑟)

Surface
area = sum of the area of the 3 squares + the areas of the 2 triangles.
Triangular prism
Cone Curved surface area = 𝜋𝑟𝑙
Total surface area = 𝜋𝑟𝑙 + 𝜋𝑟 2
= 𝜋𝑟(𝑙 + 𝑟)

Rectangular pyramid
Total surface area = sum of the 4 congruent triangular faces and the base.

Students’ activities: recall and take note.

Mode: whole class.
Teacher’s activities: leads the students in calculating the surface area of the mentioned solids.
1. Calculate the surface area of a cube with edge of 10.5cm.
Solution:
Surface area = 6𝑙 2
= 6(10.5 × 10.5)
= 6(110.25)
= 661.5𝑐𝑚2
2. The total surface area of a rectangular solid is 130°. If the solid is 7cm long and 5cm wide,
calculate the height .
Solution: Let the height be h;
Surface area = 2(𝑙𝑏 + 𝑏ℎ + 𝑙𝑏)
130 = 2(7 × 5 + 5 × ℎ + 7 × ℎ)
130 = 2(35 + 5ℎ + 7ℎ)
130 = 2(35 + 12ℎ)
130 = 70 + 24ℎ
130 − 70 = 24ℎ
60 = 24ℎ
60
ℎ=
24
ℎ = 2.5𝑐𝑚
Students’ activities: discover that the formula can be applied to find any missing dimension.
------Step 3: Discussion.
Mode: whole class.
Teacher’s activities: leads the students in calculating all the possible cases of a cylinder.
3. A cylindrical container has a radius of 7cm and height of 6cm. Calculate curved surface area
using all the possible cases
Solution:
a. Case 1: Hollow with two open ends; 7cm
Curved surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
22
=2× 7 ×7×6 6cm
2
𝐶𝑆𝐴 = 264𝑐𝑚
b. Case 2: One open end;
Curved surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ + 𝜋𝑟 2
= 𝜋𝑟(2ℎ + 𝑟) 7cm
22
= 7 × 7(2 × 6 + 7) 6cm
= 22(19)
𝐶𝑆𝐴 = 418𝑐𝑚2
c. Case 3: Two closed ends;
Curved surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ + 2𝜋𝑟 2
= 2𝜋𝑟ℎ + 𝑟)
22
= 2 × × 7(6 + 7) 6cm
7
= 44(13)
= 572𝑐𝑚2
7cm
------Step 4: Application.
Mode: whole class.
Teacher’s activities: leads the students in calculating the areas of prism and pyramid.
4. Calculate the surface area of the shape below.

9cm 13cm
5cm
9cm 3cm
12cm
Solution:
By Pythagoras theorem;
𝑥 = 5 − 32
2 2

= (5 + 3)(5 − 3)
=8×2
= 16
𝑥 = 4𝑐𝑚
Students’ activities: calculate the surface area of the above shape.
Surface area = 2{½(𝑎 + 𝑏)ℎ} + 𝑙𝑏 + 𝑙𝑏 + 𝑙𝑏 + 𝑙𝑏
= 2{½(9 + 12)4} + 5 × 13 + 12 × 13 + 9 × 13 + 4 × 13
= 84 + 65 + 156 + 117 + 52
= 474𝑐𝑚2
------Step 5: Evaluation.
Mode: whole class.
Teacher’s activities: asks the students to solve this.
5. A square – based pyramid with height of 13cm and square base size of 6cm is given below.
Calculate the surface area of the pyramid.
Students’ activities: answer the questions thus:

Solution:

13𝑐𝑚 𝑥

3cm

6cm

Surface area = area of square base + sum of 4 triangles.

Area of square base = 6𝑐𝑚 × 6𝑐𝑚
= 36𝑐𝑚2
Area of one triangle = ½𝑏𝑥
But 𝑥 2 = 132 + 32 (𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑃𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑔𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑚)
= 169 + 9
= 178
𝑥 = √178
𝑥 = 13.34𝑐𝑚
Area of 1 triangle = ½ × 6𝑐𝑚 × 13.34𝑐𝑚
= 40.08𝑐𝑚2
Area of 4 congruent triangles= 4 × 40.02
= 160.08𝑐𝑚2
Assignment:
Calculate the total surface area of a pyramid with square base 7cm long and height 10cm.
